Welcome to the 22nd Dales and Lakes Historic Vehicle DayThe event originating in 1995 when Frank Brooks, the then town clerk of Grange-over-Sands, gathered together a club (Craven Old Wheels) and sponsors (Westmorland Gazette & Craven Herald) and with them formed a plan for the first Skipton to Grange Run for vintage and classic cars and bikes. He named it the “The 1st Yorkshire Dales and English Lakes Historic Vehicle Run – Skipton to Grange over Sands”. A grand title if a little lengthy.

It is from that original concept that the present event has grown. For many years the event began with a 'run' originating at Coniston Cold near Skipton. But from 2005 it was decided that the increasingly busy traffic on the A65 made the run with its consequent block of slower vehicles unsatisfactory. Wishing to avoid giving the classic car movement a bad name, we decided to concentrate the event around the show-field display.

We get many messages of support from our entrants who clearly believe that this show, in its beautiful location, is the perfect place to meet old friends and enjoy a relaxing day in a traditional way.

For the visitor; our show provides a great opportunity to view superb vehicles owned by enthusiasts from all over the North of England. It is a chance to relive motoring images from the past, and to see the vehicles up close. Do talk to the owners; they are always happy to discuss the interesting features and history of their vehicles. You will find their enthusiasm is inspiring.

Our various stalls & sideshows, plus the live music, complements the exhibits. There are always the excellent refreshments to enjoy too. The organisers wish you a really enjoyable day.

Note: next year’s event will be on Sunday 11th August 2019

Produced by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and its successors from 1959 until 2000. The original Mini is considered an icon of 1960s British popular culture. Its space-saving transverse engine & front-wheel drive layout, allowing 80% of the area of the car's floor-pan to be used for passengers and luggage, influenced a generation of carmakers. In 1999 the Mini was voted the second most influential car of the 20th century, behind the Ford Model T, and ahead of the Citroën DS and Volkswagen Beetle.

John Cooper, builder of Formula One and rally car’s, saw the cars potential for competition. He collaborated with designer Alec Issigonis to create the Mini Cooper in 1961 and these cars went on to win 31 international events.

Purchased in 1985 by its current owner this January 1970 Morris Mini Cooper S Mk 2 is one of the rarest Coopers built. Just 3,642 Mk 2 Coopers were produced between September 1967 and January 1970 of which only 689 made it to the home market. Today, only 198 are known to survive.

Phil had always wanted a Mini Cooper S. He purchased UFL for £1500 from a lady who had been given the car for her 21st birthday the previous year. Whilst initially his “second car” it soon became clear with their third child “on the way” a bigger vehicle was required. At this stage the Cooper stepped back to being their “hobby car”.

The car is exactly as it left the showroom, with original engine, gearbox and interior. Unusually, it still sports the vented steel wheels, standard on these cars, rather than the ubiquitous minilites. She was fully restored (for a second time) in 2014 to its current condition.

All Mini Cooper S’s are a “hoot” to drive, although the rather upright seats and noisy interior can take their toll on longer journeys.

During the Second World War Bristol-based Douglas produced stationary generator engines using their 348 cc overhead valve flat twin. After the war when Douglas restarted motorcycle production they used this flat-twin mounted in a duplex frame with torsion bar rear suspension to create the Douglas T35. It was an export success at a time when this was vital to post war reconstruction. 1947 factory records show T35’s being exported to Canada, Switzerland, Belgium, Chile, and Russia.

In 1948, the company developed a series of motorcycles based on the T35. Designed by George Halliday, these featured Radialraulic forks with the front wheel spindle carried on short leading links pivoted at the rear of the forks, with springs and a dampers inside the stanchions. Douglas also hired former Sunbeam

designer Erling Poppe as Technical Director, Freddie Dixon as their specialist engine tuner and Walter Moore (who designed the Norton CS1) as Works Superintendent. The result was the 1949 Douglas Mark III (there was no Mark II), with improved performance through an uprated cylinder head, combustion chambers, and pistons.

The Mark IV (1950) and Mark V (1951 – 1954) completed the development being then replaced by the Douglas Dragonfly.

Stan has owned the Douglas for three years and admits to its restoration having been a frustrating at times, but the result has been worth all the effort. He says “it’s quirky but really nice to ride”.

We have long believed that a Jazz Band provides the perfect complement to a classic car show.

This five-piece band have been playing traditional Dixieland Jazz together for 10 years. The band includes players from Kendal, Morecambe, Poulton-le-Fylde and Colne. They are in great demand for weddings, parties, jazz nights and even the occasional funeral. They perform regular monthly gigs at Carnforth Station Café and Bare Village Club.

The players are:

Peter Boswell - cornet (ex Mainline trombone)

David Bateman - banjo & guitar

Gerry Clayton - double bass

Robin Andrews - drums & washboard

Jack Schofield - clarinet & saxophone.

Bruce Carnafin is their contact on 01539 720172

This year we are pleased to be donating surplus proceeds to Grange’s Edwardian Victoria Hall. Opened in 1901 the town’s premier venue has provided for entertainments, public meetings and private functions for over a century.

Sadly, due to the financial constraints facing our local authorities, South Lakeland District Council has this year withdrawn financial support for the Hall. The newly formed volunteer support group is now operating the Victoria Hall and trying hard to increase both usage and revenue to close the funding gap.

In return for some valuable manpower support with our show, we have agreed to support the Hall financially.

In 2018 we are supporting

The Owl and Bird of Prey Roadshow

Phil Radcliffe & Judith Brown have an extensive collection of birds of prey on show. They promote conservation through education.

Back at base they have facilities for looking after injured wild birds of prey, with a determination to return them to the wild once they can sustain themselves.

The team are experts in their field, and today they will present a selection of birds giving visitors of all ages the opportunity to see these wonderful creatures at close quarters.

There are Engineers and there are Managers but they rarely see eye to eye.

A man in a hot air balloon realised he was lost. He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below; he descended a bit more and shouted to her, “excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I am”.

The woman below replied “You’re in a hot air balloon hovering approximately 30ft above the ground; you’re between 40 and 41 degrees north latitude and between 59 and 60 degrees west longitude”.

“You must be an engineer” said the balloonist.

“I am” replied the woman “how did you know?”

“Well” answered the balloonist, “everything you told me is technically correct but I’ve no idea what to

make of your information, and the fact is I’m still lost. Frankly, you’ve not been much help. If anything, you’ve delayed my trip”.

The woman below responded, “You must be in management”.

“How did you know?” asked the man.

The woman replied, “You don’t know where you are. You’ve risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise you’ve no idea how to keep. You expect people beneath you to solve all your problems. The fact is, you are in exactly the same position you were in before we met - but now somehow it’s my fault”.

A big thank you to…

Our Sponsors and AdvertisersThe organisers are deeply appreciative of the support we receive from the advertisers who have funded this programme.

We are especially indebted to: D Stoker Group Ltd. for donating the ‘Best in Show’ Trophy and for supporting us with advertising every year.

For this brochure’s design and print we thank Matthew Atkinson of AnEye, and for provision of the Public Address system we thank Robin Duff. We also give personal thanks to our wives and partners who have given us so much support during the preparation and at the event.

Grange over Sands Historic Vehicle SocietyThe umbrella organisation running this event also has a social side. Interest in cars & bikes is not an essential requirement, but a little enthusiasm helps. We meet informally on the third Wednesday of each month at 8pm in the Bar of the Hampsfell House Hotel,

Grange over Sands. The conversation is varied and certainly not limited to motoring matters. Why not call in, or phone Geoff on 015395 33217, we will be pleased to meet you.

The Dales Historic Vehicle Club Responsible for the show-field layout and marshaling as well as many other aspect of the show both on the day and throughout its preparation - The Dales Historic Vehicle Club has been associated with the event for over ten years. Of course their members provide many of the great vehicles on show too.

‘A social club with cars’ the Club holds regular

meetings at Steeton Hall, near Skipton, on the second Wednesday of each month, organising film shows, quizzes, and guest speakers on a wide range of subjects. Sometimes they just meet for a drink and a chat.

The Club also puts on displays at various events throughout the season. These are not limited to static displays. National ‘Drive it’ day in April sees the Club take to the country roads on an organised run, finishing with a slap-up Sunday Lunch. Evening runs and a couple of weekends away make for a full and varied season.

New members are always welcome, no matter what type of vehicle you own, in fact owning a classic vehicle is not a condition of joining this small and friendly club. If you are interested, call in and have a chat today. Their tent is located to the east of the Pavilion, next to the Birds of Prey Roadshow (see the site plan), or call Ken on 01535 274848.

Personalities from the past 20 shows

In the beginning there was Frank Brooks, Andrew Monk and Neil Stronach the latter both members of Craven Old Wheels Society. Both Andrew and Neil remained involved for many years, Andrew organising the entrants and Neil the charity fundraising.

After the first year a committee was pulled together, an early minutes of meeting lists the following: Frank, Andrew & Neil plus John Blake, Geoff Critchley, Harry Whittaker, Keith Benton & Brian Murdoch. Of these founding fathers Geoff & Harry are still on the present committee twenty years on, and John regularly holds the microphone at the

show. Some other names from a few years ago have also given sterling service to the event: David Harrison, Barry Nuttall, Jim Harrison & Ian Ronald.

One man, never on the committee, nor an entrant, but almost certainly the most well informed judge we ever engaged (in the past we had appointed judges). David Ghandi of Arnside, longtime owner of the most battered Jaguar XK120, was a great guy to have along, now sadly missed.
