Lore to Conven t, Darjeeling,
India, 8th May, 1959.
Thank you and all the nuns for prayin g for Tibet. K h ando and I d rove down to Siligu ri on Saturday, 19th April , to m y b ro ther and our m oth e rs.*
A t Siliguri ther e was a big crowd to m eet my brother and to get his blessing. So wh en h e arrived we h ad no time to sp eak with him. We onl y h ad a little time to offe r him white sca rves, which is a Tibetian cu stom.
W e sp ent an hour with ou r m oth ers before the special train left for Lucknow, on its way to Mussoorie . They told u s of their journey from Lhasa; it was long and tirin g. They all h ad to dress in peasants' clothes so that they would not be recognised by the Chinese. For the first two or three days they only travelled during the night. A fter that they wen t by day and sl ept a t night in the peasants' houses and monasteries b y the wayside . I t took them a bout three week s to get to the India n border of A ssam.
T h e governmen t of India was very k in d to grant asylum to m y brother an d al so to th e th ousands of Tibe tian refu gees who ar e coming into India every day. N ow m y b rother and m y mother are in Mussoor ie which is a lovely hi1l station in the north of India.
W e are all now p raying for ou r coun try, and all the Tibetians wh o are suffering und er t h e heartles~ R ed Chinese. I hope we Tibe tia ns will soon be free from the Chinese and b e able to l ive a s p r oper human b eings in our own country.
I would like to tell you h ow much I feel about this ; but the trouble is I ca nno t express myself in words.
I must end now,
Yours sincerely,
PEMA.**

1859 RIGBY CENTENARY
100 Years of Service
1959
In 1859 William Charles Rigby came to Adelaide and opened a shop in Hindley Street with five cases of stock, valued in all at £229/ 16/ 7. For illumination in the shop and windows, candles were stuck in broken bottles. Let into the pavement for a width of twenty feet, were blue and white tiles reading: "W. C. RIGBY, BOOKSELLER, STATIONER AND NEWSAGENT." This would not find favour with the City Council to-day. In a few years Rigby became one of Adelaide's leading booksellers, and kept his position in the trade until his retirement in 1909. During his life he built large premises in King William Street, and those were famous for the remarkable designs in stone and the murals which decorated the walls. The advertisement illustrated at left was the first inserted by W . C. Rigby in the Register and The Advertiser in June, 1859, and is a guide to reading tastes in that era . RIGBY LIMITED in 1959 is an organisation devoted to satisfying the needs of school teachers , school ch i ldren and parents. R igby' s handle quality merchandise and, fully aware of their responsibility to the present and future citizens of South Australia , are cont i nually planning and working w ith teachers to produce books which contribute to the furtherance of educational ideals in Australia.
