Spirit of the Students

Last week,

which was Homecom-

ing week, was a very

good week for all of the

students. Our tiger fam-

ily does Homecoming

week to get students

engaged in school activ-

ities and to get the them

pumped for our Home-

coming game. Many

members of our tiger

family dressed up for

spirit week. A lot of the

students, like Alyssa

Hale, for one, said, “It

was my senior year, I

want to go big or go

home, and dressing up

is how I express myself.

I wanted to go out of

my way because it my

last year in high

school.” It seemed like

Alyssa’s favorite days

to dress up were Tie

Dye Day and Spirit

Day. Many students

express themselves by

dressing up, and seem

to have a lot of fun

when they do it, as well.

But not only do people

just like the “spirit day.”

A lot of the students get

pumped for the last day

of spirit day, which is

also our Homecoming

football game. During

our football game, we

played the Warriors,

and we won the game

with a high score.

Quando says,

“Homecoming game

was my most favorite

out of spirit week, we

won our game and

made my day ten times

better. I loved my date

to Homecoming; I had a

blast and the most awe-

some date ever.” One of

the best weeks in high

school is spirit week!

Why wouldn't you want

to dress up for a fun and

exciting week of

school? As Mrs. Hall

said, “I love seeing all

the students on the last

day of spirit week, see-

ing all the colors togeth-

er, and seeing how far

everyone's hard work

comes together.” The

floats this year were

beyond amazing, seeing

everyone work so hard

to make this year great

was, too. Let’s make

this another great year

at Hurricane High with

our tiger family. Spirit

week was a great week

for all the students and

we made it a blast!

HOMECOMING

Hurricane High’s

2016 homecoming was a

huge success and it re-

flected greatly upon the

parade. Students had the

chance to visit all the

elementary schools in

town. While the students

were at the elementary

schools, they got to eat

lunch and hang out with

the cool younger stu-

dents. At lunch, the foot-

ball team threw the ball

to the kids and signed

autographs. Not only

was

it a huge

success with the high

schoolers, but it was an

Amazing hit with the

kids. The football play-

ers got to ride on a fire

truck. The players got to

throw little footballs and

candy towards the kids.

Josh Parker said, “I real-

ly liked how our whole

school got together with

the elementary kids and

signed signatures for

them.”

Homecoming week is full of some of the fun-

nest activities all year, and everyone looks forward to

it. With all of the special dress up days, after school

activities, and powderpuff, some people forget about

one of the best parts of the week; the assembly. The

assembly is full of skit competitions, class battles, and

the all-famous class comps. There is one thing that

always entertains us year after year, and that is Mr.

Tiger. This is a competition between 10 senior boy

contestants, all taken from the High School, and they

practice for weeks to memorize a dance that they then

perform at the assembly. This year was nothing short

of entertainment, with Isaiah Johnson as Mr. Tiger,

Jordan Katzenbach as 1st Attendant, Isaiah Kinikini as

2nd Attendant, and Andrew Dotson

as Mr. Congeniality. The other contestants were Noah

Humphrey, Riley Ballard, Jake Carr, Derick Bunn,

Kaden Jenkins, and Trevor Stackhouse. When asked

how long they practiced for, Dotson said “We usually

practiced twice a week, for 2 hours at a time, for about

a month.” All of the winners were very busy people,

with Isaiah and Andrew being football players, and

Jordan being on Exec Council, along with all the other

contestants having very busy after school lives. It was

hard for them to take an extra two hours out of their

day to go and practice when they could have been

spending time with family, friends, or even doing their

homework. We thank all of the contestants for making

the homecoming assembly and homecoming week

memorable.

HOMECOMING

It’s known as a tra-

dition at Hurricane High to

decorate the hallways for

each class to express their

school spirit. It’s also

known that seniors domi-

nate this competition every

year, but this year was very

debatable among the clas-

ses. Each class is repre-

sented with a school color:

sophomores are white, jun-

iors are red, and seniors are

black. The seniors had

their hall completely

blacked out. They had

black posters, black bal-

loons, black covers, even

black sheets over the

lights. The senior hall defi-

nitely represented their col-

or. However, the juniors

also had their hall decked

out with their color! Red

was plastered down the

junior hall. There were also

shout out posters for

Pierce, Mckayla, Brian,

and Charlie; showing their

love for the tiger family.

Both halls were fun with

their colors and school

spirit, but have you ever

seen a themed hallway

while attending Hurricane

High? The sophomores

definitely had the best

sophomore hall seen

over the years. Sopho-

mores had white leaves

hanging from the ceiling

all the way down their hall-

way. They also had a their

graduating year hanging up

at the top of the stairs-

“2019” in big numbers.

And there was a big tiger

head at the beginning of

the hall. Not only did it

show off their school color,

but it also brought out their

school spirit with a jungle

theme, because we are the

Tigers! It was clear to see

that they took a lot of time

putting it together, and

their hallway looked amaz-

ing; as well as the juniors

and seniors hall. All three

classes did a really amaz-

ing job on their hallways,

but at the end of the week

there was only one winner,

and like always, the win-

ning hall was the senior

hall. A huge shout out to

all the students who helped

decorate their class hall-

way, homecoming week

had a lot of spirit through-

out the hallways, thanks to

you students!

Hallway Competition Burning of the H

There are many traditions here at Hurricane

High School, but one of the longest traditions that

has been going on is the burning of the H. “The

FFA has been in charge of the burning of the H ev-

er since the year 2000 to now, but the FFA got as-

signed to it. It was the executive council and volun-

teer students that were willing to help.” The tradi-

tion of the burning of the H has been going on

longer than anyone really knows or remembers.

One source says, “The tradition wasn’t happening

back in 1965, but it was around in the 1970s.” So

that’s the time of where it may have started, but

there is no real proof or documents that prove this

statement. One source says, “People would burn

tires on the H so it could be re-white washed.” An-

other source states, “They started doing it because

they couldn’t get lights up to it; so the only way to

get the H to light up was by burning it.” Another

theory is that we may have gotten it from another

high school, because there are other schools that do

this tradition, as well. Jody simply said, “It is the

burning pride of Hurricane High School. It is what

brings us together...and it is a reminder to light the

fire within us.” By Sala Pili

SPORTS Soccer

By Tyler Mitchell

The Tiger Soccer team has been on a roll this

year, and has been having a lot of success. Maddie

Long, one of our senior soccer players, said, “ One of

my favorite things is when we can come together and

play as a team.” The Tigers record this year is 5 to 1

so far; after a few big wins in region, beating Desert

Hills, and tying with Dixie. Shanel Stevens, also a

senior soccer player, said, “I love this year being able

to prove people wrong and show that we can play as a

team.” Surprisingly, these girls love their morning

practices. “ I like morning practices because we don’t

have to deal with the afternoon heat,” said Long.

“The coaches are always preaching, there is no re-

ward without sacrifice,’” said Maddie. The girls have

really taken this saying to heart, as you can tell by the

success they are having this year. “I think it shows

that you can’t just show up and automatically get the

win,. You have to work hard at practice and work

hard as a team so you can earn that reward,” said Ste-

vens. Go out and support these girls; they’re working

really hard to win and prove themselves this year.

Cross Country

Kody Watts tells us what it's all about to

be a runner on the Hurricane Cross Country

team. “Some say that there is no point to cross

country, and that you just run around for no

good reason. However this is not the case. I

have been in cross country for seven years and I

have come to realize, that I Like cross country

because I like to completely conquer my oppo-

nents; and that is what cross country is all

about: beating your opponent physically, but

also mentally and skillfully. And that is the

most satisfying reward of all.” Sounds like a

blast, and what better way to get physically fit

than winning at the same time.

ARTS Ceramics

If you have not been in the ceramics studio yet, then

you probably have not seen the new pottery wheels that

were installed this year! The previous wheels were 15 years

old. They had been repaired over and over, but they were

still breaking down. It was time for an upgrade. When decid-

ing what wheels to get, Mr. Evenson got a recommendation

from Dixie State University. They told him to get Shimpo

VL Whisper, a brand from Japan. Mr. E. was shocked by

how silent they were. Mr E commented that, “These wheels

will be around for another 15 years!” With this upgrade, the

pottery wheels let you stop much faster, and the stools are

cushioned. A beginner to ceramics, sophomore Laska Jes-

sop, had an opportunity to try both wheels. She said, “I tried

both wheels; the old ones were loud! When you put the

break down, the wheel kept spinning and spinning forever.

The new ones are quiet and make it really easy to center

your clay. The new stools are so nice, as well! You can ad-

just the height of your seat, which is nice for someone as

short as me. I'm very excited for the rest of the semester on

these new pottery wheels and to keep improving my ceramic

skills!” The pottery wheels are not the only thing that has

been recently upgraded. Last year the ceramics department

was able to purchase a brand new spray booth for glazing

and a brand new firing kiln called a “raku kiln.” “We have

the best high school ceramic studio in southern Utah. That is

my biased statement,” said Mr. Evenson said with a chuckle.

If you have not had ceramics yet, take a class next semester

and check out these new upgrades for yourself!

STUDENT LIFE Live Like Pierce

When you get it all, just remember one thing: one

man can change the world. “He always made me want to be

a better person,” Wyatt Fischer stated, when asked how

Pierce changed his life. Pierce never failed to lighten up a

room. Anyone in Hurricane could justify to that. The

hashtag #LiveLikePierce became a local hashtag for those

mourning his loss and those who feel like they are following

in his humble footsteps. “Pierce’s best quality had to be that

he was tender-hearted. He cared about other people, and

never failed to make me smile,” Coach McKeehan and

Coach Esplin said during an interview. Not only did he

touch the lives of those in Hurricane, but also those from

Pine View and other schools. Students from across the coun-

ty have been showing their support for the Adamson family

by posting pictures with their Pierce bracelets with captions

like “#LiveLikePierce” or “prayers for the Hurricane Ti-

gers.” As you go through this year, remember to keep Pierce

and the Adamson family in your thoughts. As our lives

move forward, never forget the Hurricane Tiger who left all

too soon. To the Adamson family: thank you for teaching us

how to do hard things, and our tiger family and our Hurri-

cane community loves you.

Pray for Kay

Jody has always taught us to do

hard things, and Mckayla Marshall is set-

ting an example. When asked how

Mckayla is doing at home, Mrs. Marshall

said, “Mckayla is always positive, telling

people about her tumor and how the doc-

tors are going to blast it. She is always

happy during the day, 80% of the time.

She gets really tired at night time, but she

is always upbeat.” When asked how Ma-

kayla makes your day better, Coach

Mckeehan said, “Her smile- she’s always

happy, no matter the problem. I worked

in the gym with her since she was just

tiny, she has the most infectious smile

anyone could have. She is always posi-

tive and that’s what keeps me going.”

When asked how the family was doing at

home, Jody said, “They're doing well, but

we need to still love and support them as

much as we can. All the love from the

community and school always shows

how much we care and love the family.

The support makes the family do bet-

ter.” Makayla always has the biggest

smile on her face throughout the day. She

still does still go to school- the cancer

does not stop her from slowing down her

life. Jody confirmed, “Makayla still

hangs out with friends, as much as she

can to make it through the day. It is still

hard for her, but she is making it through

this as much as she can.” We love the

Marshall family and will support them as

much as we can.

TRENDING Trending TV Shows of 2016

2016 has been full of new and exciting

shows. There are many anticipated shows such

as: America’s Got Talent, The Voice, Dancing

with the Stars, The Bachelor, and The Bache-

lorette.

One of the top trending shows right now

is a Netflix original series called Stranger Things.

It is about a boy who mysteriously disappears.

His mother, a police chief, and the boy’s friends

have to confront terrifying forces in order to get

him back. It has received 9.1/10 stars from IMDb

and has Winona Ryder, David Harbour, and Finn

Wolfhard as the main characters. Noah Harris

says it is one of his favorite shows. It has been

highly talked about and is highly recommended.

Another well-loved show is The Walking

Dead. If you haven’t watched it, you’ve probably

heard of it. The Walking Dead is about Sheriff

Deputy Rick Grimes, who leads a group of survi-

vors in their world overrun by the walking dead,

or zombies. They must fight the dead and they

fear the living. It has received 8.6/10 stars from

IMDb and has Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus,

and Melissa McBride as some of the main char-

acters. Jonah Hayes says his favorite show is The

Walking Dead. Almost everyone talks about it

and it is high on the list of anticipated shows.

One last show is Once Upon a Time. This

show is full of fairy tales and magic. It is about a

young woman with a troubled past who is drawn

to a little town in Maine, where fairy tales are not

only believed, but lived. Though not as high as

the others, it is still loved with 7.9/10 stars from

IMDb with Jennifer Morrison, Lana Parrilla, and

Jared Gilmore as some of the main characters.

Kennedy Kleinman says Once Upon a Time is

her favorite show whenever she has down time to

watch TV.

There are many more and long lists of recom-

mended shows to watch, and these were just

some of the many! Get watching!

Music? I Barely Know ‘er

As we get further into the year, we all depend on two

items to get us through the school day: our phone, and

our headphones. But what good are our headphones

without music? Summer 2016 was full of great music

from many talented artists, and most of the most sum-

mer songs came from artists that are very popular;

however, there are a few songs that came from artists

no one knows about, such as “Bullet” by Chelsea

Lankes. For the most part, summer was filled with

songs such as “Into You” by Ariana Grande, “Close”

by Nick Jonas, and “Pop Style” by Drake. These songs

were made for the perfect beach day, hanging out with

friends, or relaxing at home. Now that school has

started up again, and there are more and more songs

coming out, and more and more genres that have come

around that not many people know about, such as: Air

Pop, Glitch Souljazz, and Space Trap. Go listen to

some of these genres and you might find a new favor-

ite sound. If not, you’ll be more educated in the new

and upcoming music. School is always fun, and get-

ting good grades is always number one, but music has

helped several students while they study, focus more,

and actually makes something as boring as studying

interesting and fun.

Deer Bambi,

I can’t stop thinking about the

whales in the ocean. I feel such a deep

connection with them. I swear I can

hear their signals and speak their lan-

guage. They call to me. How do I let

the whales know I am one with them?

Sincerely,

Dory

Deer Dory,

I am sorry you’re confused.

Perhaps a “Speaking to Whales for

Dummies” book would be an order. It

may help you sort out the voices in

your head and improve your skill. Be

patient. The best of luck to you.

Sincerely,

Bambi

Deer Bambi,

I have a big problem. I ran

away from home because my step-

mother tried to have me killed and now

I’m living with 7 men in the woods.

We are all very happy, but I’m in love

with another man. (He’s a prince.)

How do I tell them I don’t want to live

with them anymore and go be with my

true love who I haven’t seen since I ran

away?

Sincerely,

Pale-Faced Beauty

Deer Pale-Faced Beauty,

This sounds like quite the pre-

dicament you are in. I suggest sitting

these men down and explaining to

them how you feel. They may even

help you find the prince. Who knows?

If all ends well, you’ll have 7 best men

at your wedding. The best of luck to

you.

Sincerely,

Bambi

Deer Bambi,

I am having a major mouse

problem. Everywhere I turn there’s a

mouse. For some reason they all appear

whenever I start to sing and they start

dancing. It’s so weird! I almost feel as

though we’re friends. What do I do

about this strange connection I have

with these mice?

Sincerely,

Singing Mouse Attracter

Deer Singing Mouse Attracter,

You do very much have a

mouse problem. Being around them too

much is bad for your health, as we can

see. I suggest getting the mice outside

and finding new friends. You know,

perhaps human friends? The best of

luck to you.

Sincerely,

Bambi

Dear Bambi
