    Kings race brings goldFebruary 21, 2010 | number 11 The Dutch newspaper in Olympic Vancouver

    Shani Davis was right. This was a Kings Race by Mark Tuitert. In a time of 1:45.57,

    Tuitert defeated top favorite Davis (USA) and Harvard Bokko (Norway) in the

    1.500 meter race. After Prince Willem-Alexander congratulated him personally,

    he made sure that everybody in the Vancouver area knows who the new Olympic

    champion is . And Tuitert isnt done yet. On Friday he will try to get another gold

    After winning two gold medals in SaltLake City, Swiss ski jumper Simon Am-mann did it again. Ammann had already

    won the normal hill event, and did thesame on the long hill, bringing his totalamount of Olympic gold medals to four.Next to Ammann the podium was exact-ly the same as it was Saturday.     athletes with Dutch roots.

    Name:Anni Friesinger-Postma (Germany)Event: Speed skating

    Dutch speed skating fans cheered her on for manytimes in Heerenveen, even when she competed un-der de name of Friesinger. But now shes married toDutch former Olympic champion Ids Postma, wecan nally say that Anni belongs to us. Althoughlots of injuries kept her from winning many races,she still could be one of the surprises of todays1.500 meter race. So next to our Dutch girls (Boer,

    Wst, Gerritsen and Van Riessen) weve got a fthgirl to cheer for.

    Name: Eric Staal (Canada)Event: Ice hockey

    Te last time the Netherlands were competing in

    the Olympic ice hockey tournament, weve got togo back to 1980. Tis year though, there is a Dutchsurprise. Canadian forward Eric Staals grandpa-rents are all four from Holland.In the 1950s, both grandparents moved from Om-men and Hoogeveen to Canada. Staals dad Henribuilt a hockey court in their backyard, so his foursons wouldnt be bored all the time. And with theirfathers help, all four made a career in, or were draf-ted by, the NHL, with Eric playing for the CarolinaHurricanes and eam Canada.In his Olympic debut against Norway, Staal gaveone assist. No matter what, this is the reason whyall the Dutch should keep an eye on eam Canadaas well.

ACanadian television reporter knows it as well: this isthe place to be tonight.Lots of Dutch inhabitants got their holiday last Fri-day. With a jetlag still present, they made the trip tothe Medal Ceremony Hall. Pieter-Jan Gielens justarrived, and didnt expect a medal celebration sosoon. In the plane to Canada we hoped for a quietevening. But when we found out uitert won gold,

    we came here as soon as we could. We denetelydont want to miss a big party like this. Tats what

    we came here to do.Mieke de Vries from Te Hague thinks Mark terts celebration is awesome. I was there durthe races. Of course, I wanted to be there with t

    celebration in the Holland Heineken House. Tatmosphere in the Richmond Olympic Oval wmagnicent. Every single fan got totally involvin the last races. Tat mad it so terric. I got tkets for the womens 1.500 meter race as well.     Marcel Hirscher is in possession of two passporso it would be really easy to let him compete for torange. Unfortunately, the Dutch landscape iscovered with snowy mountains, so thats why t20-year-old participates these Olympics for AustrIn his three years with the pros, he gets a lot compliments for his courage and way of skiing.
