Saint Paul Public Schools Community Education Senior Programsprovide access to high quality educational opportunities that support life transitions and meaningful community

connections for adults over 50.

Community Education, Saint Paul Parks and Recreation and other collaborating organizations are

working together to serve seniors, retirees and adults over 50 across Saint Paul. Weekly Programming

Shores of Lake MichiganMay 5 - 11, 2013Course # 8058-WSA Tour Rating:Take a trip along Lake Michigan, featuring the Windy City, Dutch heritage, sand dunes, horse drawn carriages and water at every turn. Our excursion takes us across America’s Dairyland for an overnight stop north of Chicago, with a narrated morning tour of Chicago and a lunch stop at Navy Pier. From there, we will travel to Holland, Michigan, a community inviting the world to celebrate the Dutch heritage during the Holland Tulip Time Festival. This world renown festival showcases Holland’s dynamic community, spectacular tulips, and authentic Dutch architecture. Onward we go to The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Northern Michigan. Sleeping Bear Dunes voted by Good Morning America viewers as one of the most beautiful places in the country, with its collection of sand dunes that peak at over 400 feet. Beautiful Traverse City will provide our accommodations on Wednesday. Thursday, we will head to Mackinac Island aboard the Star Line Ferry, the boat that produces a 35-foot rooster tail spray. While crossing, drink in the spectacular scenery including the world’s longest suspension bridge that connects Michigan’s two peninsulas. Since 1887, the Grand Hotel, the crown jewel of the secluded island, beckons visitors to a bygone era of old-world hospitality and charm. It is here that we find the Grand Luncheon Buffet, extending nearly 100 feet providing offerings beyond compare. Save room for the dessert table’s 20+ selections. When the feast concludes, enjoy a narrated, horse-drawn carriage tour where we will see Arch Rock, the Governor’s Mansion and Surrey Hill. Continue the nautical theme with a visit to the famous Soo Locks, a National Historic Site that has been allowing ships from around the world access to the heartland of America since 1855. Enjoy a narrated dinner cruise through the two longest locks in the world, right alongside the giant freighters. The Chalet Landhaus Inn Restaurant will provide us with a Swiss cookout to round our day of travel. A visit to Green County wouldn’t be complete without a stop for cheese. Tour the chalet-style plant that manufactures specialty cheeses at Alp and Dell Cheese Store and Emmi Roth USA. Wash down that cheese with sampling from Minhas Craft Brewery, the second oldest brewery in the nation. Monroe’s Courthouse Square will be your source for lunch on your own. We will return to New Glarus, for a guided tour of town and additional opportunities for sightseeing, shopping and relaxing. Fortify yourself with a Swedish dinner with Swiss entertainment at the historic New Glarus Hotel to get ready for another day on the road. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin home tour will offer an intimate look at 50 years in the life of one of our country’s greatest architects. The Old Feed Mill Restaurant in Mazomanie will be providing lunch before we make the drive back to Saint Paul. This tour requires approximately 45 minutes of outdoor walking on grassy pathways and terrace steps with no handrails. Tour planned in cooperation with Medicine Lake Tours.

Autumn in New EnglandSeptember 22-Oct. 2, 2013Course # 8063-SSA Tour Rating: Travel with friends and neighbors to an area known the world over for its stunning autumn foliage. All six New England states will be visited on this inclusive tour which has been planned by local tour operator Landmark Tours. This trip includes flights between Minneapolis and Boston where a deluxe motorcoach will be waiting. Boston is a treasure chest of history and we’ll start there. Lexington and Concord are included, as well as a day trip by ferry to Martha’s Vineyard. We’ll visit Newport to see the mansions of wealthy industrialists and journey into the Connecticut River alley. See the quaint village of Stowe in the Green Mountains of Vermont. Franconia Notch in New Hampshire is filled with scenic attractions. Travel to “The Pine Tree State” of Maine for an authentic lobster bake. The scenic drive down the spectacular Atlantic Coast will bring us full circle back to Boston. Leave the worries behind as your driver and tour director lead you through an itinerary designed with comfortable lodging, excellent dining and a sensible pace. CancellationsSaint Paul Community Education reserves the right to cancel classes due to lack of enrollment or emergencies.

Refunds•Refunds minus a $5 processing fee will only be issued if

requested three (3) business days prior to the start of the first day of class. No refunds will be given after a class has started.

•For classes and tours that have a published cancellation deadline, no refunds or credits will be issued after the specified dates.

•Full refunds or credits are issued if Community Education cancels a class or tour, or the class or tour is already filled.

Special ServicesPersons with disabilities are welcome in any class or activity and may bring a helper at no extra charge in most cases (please call first). If you need a reasonable accommodation, contact the Community Education Office where you are registering.

Closings Due to WeatherIn case of bad weather, tune to local media for notification of school closings. Saint Paul Community Education Programs are not held when the schools are closed due to inclement weather.

UCare Minnesota DiscountsUCare for Seniors allows for one $15 discount on a community education class or event each year. The discount does not apply to the Holiday Party or Summer Picnic. Members must be on UCare at the time of registration and through the duration of the class(es). Members will need to include their Ucare ID number when registering.
