Plans to build a new 3,000-home neighbourhood on the outskirts of Clifton have moved forward.

Planning permission for the new houses was granted last year, but now developers Homes England have announced that they have acquired 250 acres of the site to the south of Clifton.

The deal is also expected to support 100,000 square metres of employment space.

The development, which is set to cost more than £800m, is to be called Fairham, and be built on the site just off the A453.

The acquisition will see Homes England working with other land owners, CWC and local authority Rushcliffe Borough Council.

Their plan is to deliver thousands of new homes and employment space over the next 10 years.

Rushcliffe Borough Council’s Dave Mitchell said: “Rushcliffe has been working hard to deliver its local plan which commits to building 13,150 new homes by 2028.

“Delivery of the Fairham site is essential to our ability to maintain the momentum required, whilst is it is also a strategically important site locally, regionally and nationally for Nottinghamshire County Council, Nottingham City Council and ourselves.

“We will now look forward and remain committed to working closely with Homes England and CWC to ensure the delivery of a high quality scheme that continues to enhance the attractiveness as a great place to live and work.”

Plans are in place for future improvements to be made to Clifton’s foot and cycle paths. Plans being introduced by the Nottingham City Council would see the widening of the path along Farnborough Road from Summerwood Lane to Silverdale Walk and cycling paths being created in the area. The council are in discussions to release £920,000 from the £8.4 million Transforming Cities Fund to spend on Farnborough Road, as well as improvements to the Silverdale tram side path and the B679 between Wilford and Silverdale.

In a decision published on the Nottingham City Council website, the plans stated that: “The scheme improves walking and cycling alongside the highway network. Clifton has connections to the wider walking and cycling network but many of these paths are off

road and unlit. By improving routes that are safe from traffic but on the road network, it has the potential to provide greater opportunities for people to walk and cycle.”

The plans also stated that street lighting on these roads will also be reviewed to ensure that the paths are well lit, whilst formal road crossing points for cyclists and pedestrians will also be installed. Preparatory work started in April.

Whitegate Primary School in Clifton has received a garden makeover thanks to a volunteering programme between home improvement retailer Wickes and social enterprise, VIY (Volunteer It Yourself).

Twelve volunteers from the school worked alongside a team of Wickes colleagues from stores across the Midlands to transform the primary school’s outdoor space into a new sensory garden.

This involved building a tyre hopscotch area, a pipe xylophone, a picket fence and a sensory path for the pupils to use during their playtimes and their studies.

This project was supported by several local Wickes stores who donated all the tools and materials required.

They also covered the cost of professional tradespeople to act as mentors on the ground.

Imran Younas, a VIY mentor, told the Clifton Local News: “It’s been great to spend the day transforming this garden, especially as we were so lucky with the weather.

“We’ve been really creative in making the garden as fun as possible for the children ahead of the summer months.

“It’s also been fantastic for these youngsters to learn some invaluable skills for the future.”

Tarnya Beet, a teacher from the school, said: “We’re really grateful to the Wickes and VIY teams for all their support on this project.

“We wouldn’t have been able to achieve as much without them.

“I asked one of the students what their favourite part of the garden is and the response was ‘all of it’, so it’s definitely a winner with the kids.

“Hopefully, more of the children can enjoy it over the coming weeks and months.”

Whitegate Primary School’s garden is ready for summer

The Great British Spring Clean 2019 had the best ever participation with amazing results. Meanwhile, Kevin Bowles and Ruth Brown, local Clean Champions with councillor Andrew Rule, visited the council’s recycling facility.

Kevin said: “The sheer volume of material at the site was staggering and lorries kept bringing more and more. Watching the waste being efficiently sorted by technology - with some items still being sorted by hand - was fascinating. Paper, plastic, glass and cardboard are sorted and bundled separately, then sent off for processing. This process helps reduce huge amounts of energy used when making products from raw materials. Recycling requires much less energy and helps to preserve natural resources.

“With the ever-increasing threat to our environment from waste products and greenhouse gases released from landfill sites, it is becoming increasingly more important for us all to play our part and recycle as much as possible. Effective recycling only takes a

small change to the way we live but makes a massive difference for us and future generations. You would be surprised just how much you can actually recycle – up to 70% of our waste could be recycled or reused in some way. Get the whole family involved and make it a family challenge to recycle more. The staff at the recycling facility are passionate about recycling and asked that we reiterate a few key points that will greatly help us achieve higher levels of recycling.”

For more information the council have provided a very useful guide at nottinghamcity.gov.uk/bin-and-rubbish-collections/your-local-recycling-sites/recycle-it-right.

Kevin added: “Let’s do it right and make a greater recycle contribution.”

Dancing Days Boogie Nights at the Palais

The nocturnal ones among us may well remember starting an evening soirée

with a city-centre pub crawl, often the operative word being crawl. Many

times I blamed (tongue-in-cheek) the Shippo’s ale for my poor state the

following day, not the fact that I couldn’t manage a whole gallon to myself.

Pubs all over town were frequented by clubland punters as booze was

cheaper than the clubs so the idea was to get an internal soak before running

towards your chosen club before 10pm, when they stuck the door price up.

My pub crawl route was always The Fountain on Bridlesmith Gate, Clumber

Street’s Dog and Bear then one last pint in the Corner Pin on Lower

Parliament Street. The lads then commenced the ritual of a club crawl, gosh

they must have had deep pockets. At 7.45 I headed for work at the Palais de

Danse owned by the mighty Mecca.

The biggest venue in town. But was it the best? Let’s see what was on

offer back then. As a Palais DJ back in the mid-1970s I had a cushy

number, played a few records from 8-8.30 (club opened 8pm-1am) and

then introduced the first band, Tristram Shandy, a local band with great

harmonies, (the lads are still gigging in and around Nottingham today). Forty

five minutes later they took a break and I played just three records whilst the

stage was prepared for Luna Park.

A Leicester outfit, they were right upto date with songs such as KC and

the Sunshine Band’s Shake Your Booty and sounded just as good as my

vinyl version, although when I played vinyl, the bouncing dance floor at

the Palais did cause the stylus to jump on occasions, musicians never had

that problem. I introduced the Mike Miller Band and Red Sun on numerous

occasions too, very talented musicians although the late evening spots could

have been played by a one-man band and the floor would still have been full.

By then, the guests had taken plenty of liquid refreshment and would dance

to just about anything! I went back on after the last band to play records until

booting out time. Often to get the atmosphere real I would play the Palais

Stomp as it was known, a Northern Soul tune, guaranteed to fill the dance

floor and test the spring supports installed in 1925.

Compact SUVs have really caught on in recent years, as buyers look for a car that’s more fashionable than a people carrier and better looking than a traditional estate. There’s also a trend towards more performance, not just in a straight line, but also through the bendy bits, and this is exactly where Jaguar’s E-Pace comes in. There’s a premium badge; there’s eye-catching looks and - if you opt for one of the higher performance models - there’s certainly plenty of power.

Buying an E-Pace doesn’t mean you have to go down the sporty route though, as whether you want 150PS or 300PS, there’s a model to suit. There’s also a choice of diesel power or petrol and with the entry-level engine you can go

for front wheel drive, rather than all wheel drive, if you wish. Obviously all wheel drive gives better grip on slimy surfaces, but many people are perfectly happy with front wheel drive, which delivers a cost benefit, not just in terms of the purchase price, but also where running costs are concerned.

From the outside the E-Pace is quite an imposing-looking car, particularly from the front, where the Jaguar grille make a strong impression. The test car was equipped with optional 20-inch wheels, which obviously come into their own visually when the car is seen from the side. And it’s nicely fitted out inside, but that’s no surprise - after all, this is a Jaguar!

Looking at the range in more detail, all the engines have a nominal capacity of two litres

and all have four cylinders. Manual transmission is available on some versions, but higher-level models are only available as automatics.

The diesel offers three power levels (150, 180 and 240PS) as does the petrol alternative (200,

250 and 300PS). Unsurprisingly, if you do a lot of miles and focus on fuel economy, you’ll probably go for a diesel, whereas if you don’t do many miles, or do a lot of short journeys, or want the maximum possible performance, you’ll probably

take the petrol route. Few people will need the ‘full on’ 300PS engine and the 240PS diesel model that I drove made it was very easy to sustain a

good pace on country roads, while remaining unruffled and really not seeming to try at all. This relaxed ability was particularly welcome on long

journeys, but did mean the driver needed to be extra-careful to keep an eye on the speedometer!

One the road prices start

Honda has revealed details of the new HR-V Sport, a specific grade for the revised 2019 model equipped with the 1.5-litre VTEC TURBO petrol engine as well as upgrades to the chassis and suspension. The HR-V Sport benefits from the refreshed exterior styling and interior upgrades of the standard 2019 HR-V, with additional bespoke design features.

The 1.5-litre VTEC TURBO engine in the new HR-V Sport was first seen in the latest generation Honda Civic. The muscular four-cylinder engine gives the 2019 HR-V enhanced performance, with peak power of 182 PS (134 kW) at 5,500rpm for 6MT and 6,000 rpm for CVT.

Honda developed the HR-V Sport to cater to buyers who want a sportier driving experience from a subcompact SUV. As part of a package that aims to deliver an optimized balance of body rigidity, suspension control and steering feel, the HR-V Sport is equipped

with bespoke ‘Performance Damper’ technology. It keeps the car flatter through corners, enhances stability during sudden lane changes, and reduces vibration over uneven roads.

Looking for a larger SUV? Well the new CR-V, available in 1.5 -VTEC turbo or Hybrid model,

could be your next car. Award winning, the CR-V offers space, versatility and refinement in equal measure. A large luxurious interior, along with Honda’s renowned engineering results in a car for all occasions.

We’re very excited about the arrival of the new 2019 Honda

SUVs, the Sport a great addition to the HR-V range and the CR-V Hybrid perfectly complements the 1.5 VTEC model. You can book a test drive of the all new HR-V Sport along with the existing 1.6 i-DTEC diesel models, together with the CR-V range at your local dealership.

Sacha Patchett’s Slimming World group in Clifton have been busy raising money for charity by donating unwanted clothes.

The group raised a fantastic total of £6,150 and the money will go to Cancer Research.

It was all thanks to the Big Slimming World Clothes Throw, which runs across Slimming World’s national 18,000 weekly groups across the UK.

It takes place over a two-week period in May as members donate the clothes they’ve successfully slimmed out of and no longer need.

The national campaign raised £3.3million last year and now Slimming World and Cancer Research UK hope to match that figure this year.

Sacha’s group assembled 246 bags for Cancer Research thanks to all the generous donations.

As pictured above, the group formed a human chain with the bags to the Cancer Research shop on Southchurch Drive.

Slimming World was founded by Margaret Miles-Bramwell in 1969. There are now more than 18,000 groups held weekly across the UK and Republic of Ireland.

The latest MOT data shows that motorists in Nottingham drive an average of 7,024 miles a year, that’s less than the national average of 7,134 miles.

If you don’t drive much, is it fair to pay the same for your car insurance as those who spend their lives at the wheel?

By Miles, the new UK motor insurance company, doesn’t think it is. They’ve come up with a different way of doing things: car insurance that works on a pay-as-you-go basis – a bit like a pay-as-you-go mobile phone bill. So, the less you drive, the less you pay.

James Blackham, co-founder and chief executive of By Miles, said: “We’ve made a policy that’s fairer for people that don’t drive much. Every extra mile you drive adds to the risk of a claimand we think it’s about time that those who drive less, pay less.”

With By Miles, you pay a lower annual cost upfront to cover your car while it’s parked, then you just pay for the miles you’ve driven at the end of each month. Cover is fully comprehensive, your no claims discount is guaranteed as standard, and there’s a user-friendly app that can scan your car for faults and remind you where you parked it.

So, if you drive under 7,000 miles a year – and many of us who live in towns actually drive much less – there’s a chance you could save with pay-as-you-go car insurance.

A new way that motorists could save on car insurance

Care workers love to help others in their community – people who might struggle with simple tasks like washing and dressing but who really want to stay living at home for as long as possible. Care workers say helping others enriches their own lives because it is well known that being kind to others results in feelings of pride and happiness.

What is homecare? Homecare is an essential – and almost invisible – service where care workers visit peoples’ homes and help them with simple tasks like getting in and out of bed, showering, dressing, cooking, eating, toileting, medication, laundry, cleaning or other tasks.

Who works in homecare? Homecare workers come from all walks of life, all backgrounds and all ages. From college students to retired solicitors, all come for the same two reasons above. They want to help their community and feel good about what they do.

What about prospects? Most homecare providers offer free training towards a national QCF (NVQ) qualification. Some use this to get promoted to senior carer, care co-ordinator or a wide variety of care management roles.

What about pay and benefits? Homecare jobs pay well above the living wage and there are higher rates for weekends and up to double-time for bank holidays. You get five-and-a-half weeks paid holiday per year, pay for travel time and fuel, pension contributions, a guaranteed-hours contract and even access to lifestyle benefits such as discounts in some high-street stores. For more information call Claire, our recruitment lead, on 0115 727 0401.

Do you want to help others and be happy?

As spring changes into summer it may come as a surprise that it is not too late for your local, inde-pendent lawn company Prograss to come and make a real difference to your lawn in time for the summer season.

An instant improvement can be seen after just one treatment.

With each subsequent treatment we can further move the lawn forward and this means improving it with every visit.

How we do this is quite simple. The first treatment requirements will be to start dealing with what we don’t want in the lawn, which will be weeds, thatch and moss.

We would then work on what we do want, which is the existing healthy grass and the aim is to green, strengthen and thicken it.

Then it starts to out-compete the weeds and moss rather than the other way round.

It is important to remember grass is a plant and like any plant, if you give it food and nutrients it will respond positively.

The result is always an immediate improvement in the lawn.

The commercial products Prograss use are among the highest quality available and are child, pet and environmentally-friendly.

If mechanical work - hollow tine aeration and scarification - is required, this can be delayed until the autumn, so as to not disrupt the lawn's appearance too much and it can be used as normal for most in the summer.

Hollow tine aeration is done using a machine which extract thousands of cores out of the lawn.

This process reduces the com-paction of the lawn opening up the root zone allowing food, water and nutrients into the soil.

The grass roots then go down for the food, water and nutrients and like any plant a plant with a strong root is a healthy plant.

Scarification is done using a ma-chine that has a powerful motorised rake and its aim is again to take out what we don’t want in the lawn, moss and thatch - and leave

in what we do want which is the healthy grass.

Scrarifying properly is a highly skilled job as the blades have to be set at the right height.

Too high and not enough is taken out, too low and severe damage can be done to the lawn.

For mechanical work, Prograss use only the best quality machinery available which caters for all sizes of lawns small or large.

If you would like Prograss to come and do a free, no-obligation lawn health check and quote please call us on 01949 837367 or visit the website pro-grass.com.

A teenager from Clifton has helped England’s all-girl junior squad win gold at a prestigious gymnastics tournament in the USA. Fifteen-year-old Chelsea Wright - along with Lauren Whitehead, Emily Lemotte and Summer Newton - were part of Team England’s squad in Florida at the Cheerleading Union World Championships.

The Nottingham contingent are all members of the East Midlands Cheerleading Academy based in Sneinton. They were all selected to be a part of the Team England

squad that headed out to Florida on 18th April, where they competed against the best in the world and won gold. The team topped the podium and overcame tough competition from Japan and Austria who took silver and bronze respectively.

Chelsea said: “It still hasn’t quite sunk in that I am a world champion. It’s the most indescribable feeling and a memory I will treasure for the rest of my life. I hope that this will now be a step forward in my dream of going to the Olympics.”

Jessica Widdowson from Clifton beat competition from across the country to win a silver medal at the Association of Colleges (AoC) Sport National Championships. Jessica is studying towards a Foundation Degree in Sports Coaching at Nottingham College and won her medal in in the table tennis competition. She competed in both singles and doubles matches, coming second overall.

Eighteen-year-old Jessica said: “This year I was aiming to come fourth after coming fifth last year. To then be awarded second and the silver medal was just amazing. I am so glad that months of training paid off and I earned myself a medal.

“It was another amazing weekend full of talented sportspeople and I only hope I can qualify again next year during my last year in college.”

Jessica, who was also one of the team captains for the East Midlands team this year, continued: “It was an honour for me to be selected as a captain. It was my third year competing, which I am so happy about. The National Finals is my favourite weekend of the year.”

Abbi Bladon from Nottingham College supported Jessica at the event and said: “We’re so proud of all the competing students. Jessica and her team-mate did the region proud and worked really hard to achieve this medal.”
