Grand Lodge Officer Degree NightThe 2017-18 Grand Lodge Officer line convened on February 10th at Scottsdale

Lodge No. 43 to preform a First degree for a Peoria Lodge No. 32 candidate. All ritual was performed with almost complete accuracy. With 14 Grand Lodge

Officers, over 20 Lodges represented and more than 80 attendees a good time was had by all.

Scotland Trip in 2019Brethren,Many of you heard about a second trip to Scotland. I'm planning a trip to Roslyn Lodge 606 and Roslyn Chapel in May of 2019. We will be putting on a 3rd Degree for Roslyn Lodge 606 and thereafter WB Geoffrey Spence will give us a recapitulation of the second section inside Roslyn Chapel demonstrating the various symbols and how they relate to Freemasonry. I'm in the process working with WB Geoffrey from Roslyn 606 organizing this beautified and one in the lifetime trip. No Masonic Jurisdiction from the US has ever put on a degree in Scotland; Arizona Masonry will be the first.If you are interested in traveling to Scotland in 2019, pleaselet me know as we are taking reservations. Mark Master Quarry Degree held Saturday, February 17th, 2018 in Wikieup.The weather was astounding and the location was simply stunning. The degree was held at the remote mountain mine of Companion and 65 year Mason Donald Van Brunt. Five Master Masons candidates were present received the Mark Master Degree. One Kingman 22 Bro and candidate was Raised at an outdoor degree just last May and now has received two outdoor degrees. What a wonderful memory for him. An outdoor BBQ feast was served following the degree Real Mark Masters at labor in a real Quarry. No better way to spend a day in fellowship with Brothers from across the State.

Mentor or Coach?Are they one and the same? Sometimes Yes and sometimes No.Can you be a Mentor without your knowledge? Most assuredly, Yes. Do you have to have specific knowledge about a subject to be a Mentor ? Not necessarily arequirement to be a Mentor, as a Mentor may just set an example to be copied. A Mentor may not even know he is being emulated. A Mentor can also be a distanced and disinterested person.Can you be a Coach without your knowledge? Not really, because being a Coach requires personal involvement with an individual or group.Do you have to have specific knowledge about a subject to be a Coach? Most assuredly, Yes. Because another definition for Coach is trainer. A Coach can not be distanced and disinterested. Being a Coach, in my estimation, requires the ultimate in dedication to the student.Why do we as a Fraternity, then assign a Brother to be a Mentor, when in reality, upon initiation of a candidate, we assign aCoach? We provide the candidate with a study program for each of the degrees, then examine him in that study. We Assign a Brother to guide (Coach?) him through the program. Wouldn't the Mentor select the person to be mentored? Not all Mentors can coach in ritual or Masonic knowledge, nor should they. They can, however set examples to be followed, thus every Mason should be a Mentor. A Coach, is one who has intimate knowledge of Freemasonry and willingly guides the candidate. Can a Coach become a Mentor? That is the fruition that we want our hope to endth in, a strong bond between two brothers. We need both Mentors and Coaches. Henry was initiated in Pinal Lodge #30, in Casa Grande in 1982 and served as their Public Schools committee chairman for several years before being transferred to northern Arizona and later retiring to Tucson. While with Pinal #30 Henry was the Youth liaison where he served on the Gladys Skidmore Rainbow adult advisory board for six years (President 2yrs) and as Rainbow Dad for six years. After moving to Tucson he joined Marion McDaniel Lodge #56 in 1992 and became their

Youth Committee Chairman as well as Sr. Deacon. He joined Fidelity Rainbow Assembly Adult Advisory Board where he served for 8 years and 6 years as Chairman of the Board and 7 years as Rainbow Dad. He also served on their Public

Relations Committee and the Tucson Rodeo Parade Concessions Sales Committee for 8 years and Chairman 4 years. This involved coordinating with the Tucson Parade Committee, Coke Cola Company, McDonalds Fast Foods, Tucson Ice,

Pima County Health Department to mention a few and also coordination of all these functions with a Rainbow Girl for her education and experience in managing a multi facet operation/program.

Henry was instrumental in obtaining professional training for all the Arizona Masonic Youth Groups. Arizona Rainbow Grand Assembly utilized the program for their Grand Assembly Rainbow Officials and Adult Leaders to obtain their

Leadership and Conduct certification for several years as well as Leadership and Professional Conduct and Awareness Classes for Rainbow Girls.

Henry has served the Order of the Eastern Star for over 30 years. He has been Worthy Patron of Ocotillo Chapter #21,

In Grand Chapter he has served as Grand Representative of Montana and Michigan, on the Distinguished Guests, Budget, Decorations, Elections twice, Fiesta Day 3 years and Paraphernalia committees as well as serving on and Chairing Elections, Security, Stair Masters, Finance, and Assistant Grand Sentinels committees. For Saguaro Chapter # 48 he handles the recruiting of personnel to man a concession stand at the University of Arizona football games.

In the Order of the Amaranth he has served as Royal Patron of Tash Tonlik Court #10 in Tucson, five times. He served as a State Representative to Idaho and Colorado, Grand Marshal, Grand Royal Patron of Arizona and a Deputy Supreme Royal Patron of the Supreme Counsel Order of the Amaranth Inc. He has served on and chaired the following committees: Elections 5 years, By-Laws 3 years, Paraphernalia 8 years, Decorations 10 years, Leadership 2 years, General Arrangements chairman 5 times and Grand Chief Commissioner of Appeals. He has served as Supreme Representative to Italy, Nevada, Utah, Mexico, Chile, and Uruguay. He has held some office for the past 14 years. He is active in raising funds for Diabetes Research.

Henry was the Director of 9th & 10th degrees in the Scottish Rite for a couple of years before having to give it up due to demands for his time to work as a Lodge Program Coordinator and the Grand Lodge Public Schools Programs. He is the recipient of the KCCH honorary degree.

Henry was a member of the Masters and Wardens Association of Southern Arizona for many years where he served as President for several years. He coordinated their Public Schools Essay contests for 6 yrs.

He obtained and delivered hospital equipment to and from the Association’s Hospital Loan Chest facility as well as loading old and unused equipment for delivery to medical clinics in Mexico annually.Henry served as Worshipful Master of Marion McDaniel Lodge # 56 twice and filled in as Worshipful Master two other years when the WM as unable to complete his year or moved from the area due to employment. He chaired their youth groups committee for 8 years, Public Schools Committee for the past 21 years and the Children at Risk committee for the past 17 years. He has been on the Masonic Education Program 6 years and as Chairman 4 years He has served as Head Ritual Coach for the past 4 years and also leads the Candidate Education and Mentoring Program. He also coaches candidates through memory work. He started their Bikes for Books program 14 years ago with 4 bikes per year which has expanded to 26 bikes per year. Through his leadership, local merchants have joined with the lodge in supporting the program. The program has now revolved into ABC Reading program. Henry is a five times recipient of the Marion McDaniel # 56, Mason of the Year award and the first recipient of the Marion McDaniel Corner Stone award and the Hats off Award. In 2013 Henry received a commendation from Coronado K-8 School for his continues help to make a difference in the Coronado Community. Also in 2013 he and Marion McDaniel Lodge received a commendation from the Amphitheater School District for continued support of the district’s Elementary Schools reading programs. Henry is active in the degree work, funeral team and fills in offices as needed, be it for a lodge meeting or degree work. For the Arizona Grand Lodge Henry has served as Grand Sword Bearer and a Lodge Programs Coordinator (predecessor of DDGM).

He is again serving on the new Public Schools Essay Committee and has served on the following committees: Foreign Relations (3 yrs.), Ritual Revision (2 yrs.), Public Schools (14 yrs.) and Chairman (7 yrs.), Public Relations (2 yrs.), Registration, Credentials, Education, Grand Representative to a Foreign Jurisdiction, General Arrangements (2 yrs.) and General Arrangements Chairman for GM Robert Conrad.The Arizona Masonic Foundation for Children has been provided with his services for the past 22 years where he traveled the State providing talks on the Children at Risk program to lodges and schools as well as helping to put on training sessions. He has served as follows: Member of Board of Directors 17 years, Board Vice President 2 years, Board President 13 years and he currently serves as the Foundation’s Funding Director where he writes grant proposals which have generated over a quarter of a million dollars in revenue for the Children at Risk Program. He began the AZ. Child ID Program by obtaining a private donation of $15,000. He purchased the equipment and supplies and helped at several of the first AZID events. The equipment and supplies were later donated to Arizona Grand Lodge, where Most Worshipful Brother David Luedke, PGM, took over management of the program. The National Masonic Foundation for Children presented Henry with their Recognition of Excellence Award. He was Chairman of the Board when Arizona received the State Excellence and Leadership Award for the National Foundation for Children. With the help of WB Jerry Badinger, Foundation President, the Foundation has moved from two trainings per year to five per year and are on schedule to reach six per year in the near future. Henry has chaired and coordinated the first four Children at Risk Charity Golf Tournaments and is currently working on the fifth tournament. For 12 years Henry volunteered at the University of Arizona’s PBS television station where he was assistant coordinator with PGM Harold York for several years before becoming the Coordinator. He called and scheduled members from lodges in Southern Arizona as well as Eastern Star, Amaranth, Shrine, Daughters of the Nile and Ladies of the Oriental Shrine,

He also answered phones and did book keeping and financial accounting for the campaigns. Henry also trained new volunteers on how to answer phones, take donations, select and schedule gift giving and how to handle obscene phone calls. Most Worshipful Brother Robert Conrad, PGM and Henry did several Public Service Talks on Masonry during PBS airings. Henry has been honored by KUAT TV and the University of Arizona with their “Outstanding Volunteer award”.

He served four years as the Masonic Coordinator for Kids Voting Arizona where he coordinated the packing and distribution of voting material to all schools in Arizona. He also coordinated and operated Kids Voting Booths across southern Arizona for two years. He has been honored by the Arizona Kids Voting Organization with their “Kids Voting Arizona Volunteer of the Year award”.

Henry has also been recognized bythe Arizona Governor for his volunteer services in the state and served four years on Arizona Governors’ Books for 3rd graders committee. For two year he coordinated and worked with localMasons and the Tucson Rotary Club with the packing and distribution of Books to all Tucson 3rd grade schools.

Served several years on his Home Owners Association Board of Directors as a member and as President one year.

He is retired U.S. Military and served in Naval Aviation and Air Force Security Police where he earned the Distinguished Service Medal, Vietnam Combat Service Medal with 3 stars, Vietnam Campaign Metal, National Defense Medal, four Navy and two Air Force Good Conduct Medals, 2 Outstanding Service Unit Awards and several Rifle and Small Arms Awards and numerous lesser service awards. Henry is also retired from Federal Law Enforcement as a Supervisory Criminal Investigator and Special Agent in Charge.A life member of the Southern Arizona Masonic Sojourners Association and the National 3-6-5 support group.In 2016 U.S. Representative Martha McSally, Arizona 2nd congressional District presented Henry with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition as a Veteran of Distinction for his continuous outstanding community service in Southern Arizona.

Henry and his wife Joanie have five children and eight grandchildren so are active in school sports, motor cycle racing and hunting activities. He also volunteers threedays each year to assist with the Arizona Jr. High School State Wrestling Championship Tournament and severaltimes a year at Ben’s Bells.

Born in Taylorville, Illinois February 17, 1940 Currently resides in Flagstaff, Arizona. Most Worshipful Mike retired from his 22-yearcareer with the Arizona Department of Public Safety where he served as a Law Enforcement Detective. He also served as a Law Enforcement Detective for the Santa Ana California Police Department. He also worked for the finance divisions of Westinghouse Credit and ITT. He is a combat veteran, having served two tours of duty as a Marine in Vietnam.

Most Worshipful Mike began his Masonic career over fifty years ago in Illinois. He is both a Scottish Rite and York Rite Mason and a member of El Zaribah Shrine and the Arizona Military Degree Team. An Arizona Mason since 1969 he has served as Grand Lecturer, District Deputy Grand Master, and Grand Sword Bearer. He has also been honored as the Arizona Mason of the year in 2010 and received the Distinguished Service award in 2003

MASONIC EDUCATIONTHE OLD CUSTOM OF "DRAWING THE LODGE"By Norman B. Spencer, 27 June, 1929Published in SELECTED PAPERS, Vol.1United Masters Lodge No. 167, Auckland,In reading the histories and extracts from the Minute Books of old Lodges, which existed between the years 1717 and 1813, we frequently come across expressions "Drawing the Lodge," "Framing the Lodge," or "Forming the Lodge." My purpose this evening is to enquire into the meaning of these expressions and to show how, from this old custom, the modern Tracing Boards with which everyone is familiar have arisen. In those days a Lodge generally met at some well-known inn or hostelry. The furnishings of such a place were very bare and plain. There was no electric light or gas, candles being the only illuminantin those days, while the floor was bare boards, carpets being unknown. Down the middle of the Lodge room were tables set on trestles. On these tables were set out the bowls of steaming punch, bottles of wine, rum, brandy, sugar, lemons, and glasses,and also screws of tobacco for the smokers; for it must be remembered that smoking and drinking were allowed in the Lodge during the ceremonies in those days. Toasts were drunk and songs sung between different portions of the ceremonies, theBrethren sitting at the tables and the candidate passing round behind them. The floor of the Lodge room, being bare boards, was sprinkled with sand. When, however, there was an initiation, a space in front of the Master's Pedestal was swept clear ofsand. On this clear space it was the Tyler's duty to draw with chalk and charcoal a design in the form of an oblong square representing a building, with various Masonic Emblems. The chief items so delineated were the two Columns, SevenSteps, Tesselated Pavement, Dormer or Window, Laced Tuft, Flaming Star with the Sacred Letter "G," the Square, Plumb Rule, and Level. (The drawing is considered by some to have been a representation of the ground plan of King Solomon's Temple, whilst others deem it to have represented the form of the Lodge.) These were all carefully drawn in black and white, the floor being previously whitened to form a suitable background.

This was evidently found to be the best way to impress on the candidate's mind and memory the great lessons and symbolism of Freemasonry. After they had been carefully explained, the candidate was handed a mop and pail of water and compelled to wash out the "Drawing on the floor", that no cowan or intruder might learn any of their ceremonies. In some Lodges, such as the Old Dundee Lodge, portions of the ceremonies, including "Drawing the Lodge," were carried out in a small room opening off the main Lodge room and known as the "Making Room." The drawing on the floor appears to have been a very important part of the ceremony and a Lodge could not legallybe held to initiate a candidate without it. It was a much greater part of the ceremony in a Lodge working under the "Modern" Grand Lodge than in oneworking under "The Ancient." In the quarrels between the two Grand Lodges the "Ancients" make frequent gibes at the "Moderns" custom of "Drawing the Lodge." Bro. Laurence Dermott, the Grand Secretary of the "Ancients," in the instruct!ion to the "Ahiman Rezon" of 1764, referring to the "Moderns," writes, or twelve shillings for drawing two sign posts with chalk, etc.: and writing Jamaica Rum upon one and Barbadoes Rum upon the other, and all this, I suppose for no other purpose than to distinguish where the liquors are to be placed in the Lodge.“ There are two main sources from which we get our information regarding this old custom-the minutes of the old Lodges which were working in the 18th century, and the exposures and spurious rituals,

From the minutes of the old Lodges we find that it was the Tyler's work to draw the Lodge on the floor. Thus in the minutes of the Old Dundee Lodge, No.18, one of the oldest London Lodges, we have the following: "1795, August 13th, paid Bro. Geo. Mills, (Tyler) for 'framing and forming the Lodge,' 2/6"; "1799, August 8th. paid Bro. Mills (Tyler) for 'forming 6 Lodge,' 15/," and in the minutes of the Grenadiers Lodge, "1763, November 14th, 'Agreed by this Lodge that Bro. Lister be a free member for drawing the Lodges except no Making or Raising in the quarter then he is under obligation to pay.'" According to the minutes of the Shakespeare Lodge, a whiting box and penknife were bought on Jan. 26th, 1774, for the sum of £1/! 1/6, evidently for the Tyler in his work of drawing the Lodge. It seems to have been the custom to pay the Tyler for drawing the Lodge. This was known as the "Tyler's fee," and was quite apart from the amount he received for performing the usual duties of Tyling. This fee was usually paid by the candidate directly to the Treasurer and paid over by him to the Tyler. In a few of the old Lodges this payment bythe candidate to the Tyler has been continued to the present day, though the services for which the payment was originally made have long ago ceased to be performed. The "Tyler’s fee" in different Lodges varied from 6d. to 2/6. In the Old DundeeLodge the amount was originally 6d. It was raised to 1/6 in 1771 and to 2.6 in 1795. It was 2/6 in the Lodge of Felicity in 1738and also in the Old Kings Arms Lodge, No. 28, in 1752. There are many references to the custom in the exposures andspurious Rituals published during the 18th century. The following two seem to be the most interesting. The first is from an exposure dated 1762 and known as Jachin and Boaz, and is as follows:- "The candidate is also learnt the step, or how to advance to the Master upon the drawing on the floor, which in some Lodges resembles the Grand Building termed a Mosaic Palace (Pavement?), and is described with the utmost exactness. They also draw other figures, one of which is called theLaced Tuft, and the other The Throne beset with Stars. There is also represented a perpendicular line in the form of a Mason's instrument, commonly called the Plumb Line; and another figure which represents the Tomb of Hiram, the first

These are all explained to him in the most accuratemanner, and the ornaments or Emblems of the Order are described with great facility. The! ceremony being now ended, the new-made member is now obliged to take a mop out of a pail of water brought for that purpose and rub out the drawing on the floor, if it is done with chalk or charcoal.“ The following is an extract from "The Three Distinct Knocks“ (1760): "The explanation of the following figure which is all the drawing that is use din this sort of Masonry called the Most Ancient bythe Irishman. It is generally done with chalk or charcoal on the floor; that is the reason that they want a mop and pail as often as they do: before when a man has been made a Mason, they wash it out; but people have taken notice and made game of them about the "Mop and Pail," so some Lodges use tape and little nails to form the same thing and so keep the world more ignorant of the matter. This plan is drawn on the floor East and West.“ The custom of drawingthe Lodge prevailed from the earliest time of Speculative Masonry, right down to the time a little over a hundred years ago, when the Tracing Board, as we know it, came into general use. There were probably several reasons for the decline of the custom of drawing the Lodge. As time went on, Lodge rooms were made more comfortable and the bare floors were covered with carpets on which itwould be impossible to draw with chalk or charcoal. Another probable reason was the ridicule cast on the custom by contemporary writers. Probably also there were many Tylers who were notvery good artists, and the resultant drawing may have left a good deal to be desired. While the custom of drawing the Lodge was dying out and before the introduction of the Tracing Board, as we know it, various expedients were resorted to. Some Lodges, such as the Royal Alpha Lodge and the Old Dundee Lodge, had metal templates cut to represent the object to be delineated.

MASONIC EDUCATIONTHE OLD CUSTOM OF "DRAWING THE LODGE"It is not! clear however, whether these pieces of metal were used, as is suggested by Bro. Heiron, to help the Tyler in his drawing, or whether the pieces of metal themselves were placed on the floor instead of the drawing. It has been suggested that the use of these metal patterns by the Tyler in making his drawing gave rise to the expression "Framing the Lodge." Tape and tacks were also sometimes used. In Bristol these metal representations were laid out on a board with a painted border. This method is used to the present day in their Lodge of Instruction. Another expedient which was widely used, was the drawing of the Symbols and form of the Lodge on a piece of cloth or linen, which could be placed on the floor when required for use and rolled up and put away when not in use. It is undoubtedly in these old Tracing Cloths or Floor Cloths that our modern Tracing Boards have their origin. For the sake of convenience, these cloths were place don boards held up by two trestles an!d known as trestle boards. Gradually the custom seems to have arisen the drawing on the floor was known as "The Lodge" this board became known as "The Lodge Board" or "Trestle Board." It seems impossible to lay down a definite rule for the change from the drawing on the floorto our present Tracing Boards. During what we might call the period of transition, there was very little uniformity. Some Lodges appear to have had the cloths before they had the boards, some to have had the boards first and some to have gone straight from the drawing on the floor to the drawing on the board, at first done afresh at each meeting and later permanently painted. Some appear to have had both at the one time. In fact, one Lodge at the present time (the Phoenix Lodge, No.257) uses its old floor cloth as well as a Tracing Board. The modern name for it, "The Tracing Board," appears to be a misnomer, as the Tracing Board is one of the emblems which appears on it. This seems to be quite clear, from the lecture on the first Tracing Board. It is described a! s one of the three Immovable Jewels "for the Master to lay lines and draw designsupon," and after describing the rough and perfect Ashlars, the lecture goes on: "They are called immovable jewels because they lie open and immovable in the Lodge for the brethren to moralise upon." MASONIC EDUCATIONTHE OLD CUSTOM OF "DRAWING THE LODGE"been referred to in the lecture, otherwise the description is incongruous, since itwould not be possible for the Master to lay lines and draw designs on the board as now in use, and on the other hand there would be no sense in moralizing on a perfectly plain board such as could be used by the Master to lay lines on. It seems clear, therefore, that what we know now as the Tracing Board is in reality the Lodge Board or Trestle Board, which the brethren are invited to moraliseon and which has the emblems painted on it. The real Tracing Board - for the Master to lay line son - is the plain drawing board, one of the Emblems depictedon the Lodge Board. Although the above facts seem to be generally accepted, it has been maintained by some, notably Bro. Speth, that the present board is the original Tracing Board which the Master used to lay lines on andwhich was quite blank. Gradually, he maintains, the emblems which weredepicted on the Drawing of the Lodge on the floor or later on the cloths or floor cloths, as they were called, were transferred to the blank drawing board, making it as we have it now, and the floor cloths preserved only the pavement and tessellated border which we have at the present time. The drawing on the floor was always known as "The Lodge." Thus I the description of the Procession at the dedication of the new Grand Lodge Hall in 1776, we have "Four Tylers carrying the Lodge covered with white satin." The Lodge referredto was undoubtedly a board with the "Form of a Lodge" drawn on it and was

In the engraving by Antoine Benoist of the Mock Procession of the Scald-Miserable Masons in 1742, we see alarge floor cloth being carried as a banner. On it are painted the symbols of the third degree and in the explanatory key underneath it is described as a "Master Mason's Lodge." We have a survival of this use of the word "Lodge" in our present dayritual. When a candidate is placed at the N.E. corner of the "Lodge" he is placed at the N.E. corner of the Lodge Board, which is near the centre of the Lodge room (and not at the N.E. end of the Lodge room). In some of the provinces in England, at the co! nsecration ceremony, the phrase "let the Lodge be uncovered" is still used. The brethren who sign the petition forthe Warrant are placed round "The Lodge," that is, round the Tracing Board of the First Degree.

There seem to have been no regulation as to what emblems should be drawn on the floor; just as at the present time there seem to be no written rules as to what should be depicted on the Tracing Board. Custom, however, seems to have decreed that certain emblems should be depicted, though how they should be is left to the artist. Though the facts which I have givenyou this evening, brethren, regarding the old custom of "Drawing the Lodge" and the origin of our modern Tracing Boards, are no doubt familiar to most of you.

I hope that in what I have said there may be some new information, however small, for every one of you.

MASONIC TRIVIA Dedicated in 1911, the Portland Masonic Temple is the home of the Grand Lodge of Masons in Maine, and man Masonic bodies. The temple's front half is used for commercial purposes. The back half, with its own entrance and elevator, contains two Lodge rooms, a large auditorium, drill hall, banquet room, library, and many other functions rooms.

In 1988, a group of masonic leaders met with President Ronald Reagan; the Grand Master of DC presented him with a "Certificate of Honor", and the Phoenix Scottish Rite-SJ & Shriners International made him an honorary member of those bodies.

TALES OF ARIZONA MASONRY 1882-2016Francis Shaw 1887 Grand Master F.& A.M. of Arizona runs for OfficeMr. Shaw the Socialist Standard Bearer (Arizona Daily Star Thru, Oct 27, 1904)Maricopa county is doubly honored in this political campaign by having among her citizens the candidates of two political parties for the office of delegate to congress. There is probably no intelligent voter in the territory now but who knows that the republican standard bearer, B.A. Fowler, hails from Maricopa county. The other is Francis M. Shaw, the candidate fo the socialist party, but owing to the fact that the party has little if any newspaper support in the territory but true prominence has been given Mr. Shaw’s candidacy.There is supposed to be no change for Mr. Shaw to be elected as the numerical strength of his party has been small as compared with that of the democratic and republican parties but it is very evident that the socialist faith has gained many converts in the last two years, in all parts of Arizona, and the number of voted that will be cast for Shaw my prove surprising in some quarters. The partyis fortunate in having selected as its leader a gentleman against whom no argument can be made except the argument that controverts the political principles he stands for, and that such a clean man has been chosen is entirely creditable and adds some strength to their cause. As a mater of news interest concerning the personality fo the socialist candidate the following facts are given to the reads of The Republican.Mr. Shaw is a native of eastern Tennessee and was born April 27, 1832. His first vote for president was cast for Filmore and for 36 years he was affiliated with the republican party. In 1892 during the administration of Harrison he remolded his faith and for two years classed himself with the populists. Not finding exactly what he was looking for in that organization, and the organization in fact having disbanded in this territory he espoused the socialist cause and has been identified with that movement for this last ten years.

TALES OF ARIZONA MASONRY 1882-2016Francis Shaw 1887 Grand Master F.& A.M. of Arizona runs for OfficeMr. Shaw the Socialist Standard Bearer (Arizona Daily Star Thru, Oct 27, 1904)During his career as a republican Mr. Shaw was often honored in positions of trust and however one may have then differed with him concerning political policies or whatever contrary opinions his critics may now hold in matters of governmental policy, none can successfully attack his personal character, his integrity or his fidelity to home, country or personal convictions of right or wrong.He crossed the plains to California in 1850, spent twelve years in mining in the Golden state, moved to Nevada in 1862 and came from there to this valley in 1870, camping on Nov 16 of that year about where the plant of the Phoenix water works is now located. Within a week after his arrival he took a contract to enlarge the Swilling canal to twenty feet on the bottom, it being onlyfive feet at the time. The contract was completed in January, ‘72 and on the first of February he accepted the position of Zanjero of the canal, which he held till September, 1872.The county was organized by John T. Alsap (the second Grand Master of F. & A.M. of Arizona) that fall and C.H. Gray, M.P. Griffin and Mr. Shaw were appointed by Governor Safford as members of the first board of supervisors. In the spring of 1871 Mr. Shaw was also appointed by Judge C.A. Tween, as clerk of the district court, and at a special election in May of the same year, he was re-elected a member of the board of supervisors to serve the short term, holding the two offices contemporaneously.

TALES OF ARIZONA MASONRY 1882-2016Francis Shaw 1887 Grand Master F.& A.M. of Arizona runs for OfficeMr. Shaw the Socialist Standard Bearer (Arizona Daily Star Thru, Oct 27, 1904)In 1872 his term as supervisor having expired, he resigned the office of clerk.In 1877 occurred the death of County Treasurer John W. Owens and the board of supervisors appointed Mr. Shaw to fill out the upired term, so he gave up his position at McDowell and moved back to Phoenix. The next year he was elected to the officeof county treasurer. During his term the district clerk died and Judge DeForest Porter appointed Mr. Shaw clerk of the court again, so for the second time he was holding two offices till the expiration of his term as treasurer. He retained the office of clerk till 1884, when he resigned and was succeed by C.H. Knapp. From that time to the present he has held no public office, devoting himself most of the time to mining and ranching, though in late years a large part of his time has been taken up in the performing the duties of secretary of the Masonic Fraternities of this city.

He said to a Republican reporter yesterday that he had accepted the socialistnomination for congress, and would do all he could in an honorable way to secure the election of himself as delegate to congress- Phoenix Republican
