Surprise treat!Hope Coombs

Things may have been a little quiet the last week of April, but for good reason! We were busy pack-aging up surprise bags for more than 70 Camp

Cornerstone families that were “porch-dropped” over the weekend of May 2 and 3! These bags are filled with snacks and activities to encourage you and let our Camp Corner-stone Kids know how much we love and miss them!

If your family didn’t get a delivery, we probably need to up-date your information in our database. Please email [email protected] and we’ll get everything updated for our next delivery!

We appreciate our volunteers!

We delivered some tasty treats to say “thanks” to some of our volunteers who have been the hands and feet of Christ during these trying days.

If you’d like to be a part of our outreach efforts, we have lots of ways you can be involved. Just contact the church office (717-834-4641) or visit our website (ccduncannon.com/serve).

I do, I did!

If you get an email with the subject “Knock Knock,” don’t open it. It’s a Jehovah Witness working from home.

To our friends and customers: We know you’ve probably been wondering what’s going on with Feels Like Home. After eight wonderful years of making new friends and supporting our community, it’s time to close our doors as a store. We have been so blessed to be on the square in this wonder-ful community and meet so many neighbors. We are so thankful for the support this community has given our store that we have been able to pour back into the community. In fact, over the past eight years, we’ve been able to give more than $50,000 in monetary and household item donations to our neighbors in a time of need. God provided so many wonderful opportunities that allowed our store to continue operating with little or no overhead costs. We were able to partner with Ashley Furniture and receive new or gently used furniture to sell and support our community in big ways. The biggest blessing was our wonderful landlords that saw the vision of being a light in the community and supported us in every way. However, every season comes to an end. Ashley Furniture has relocated its distribution to Maryland and no longer operates a local warehouse. And, our landlords have decided that their life is changing as well and they are in a place where they want to prepare to sell the building. And, we want to promise you, our friends and neighbors, that we are still committed to support our community! As a ministry of Cornerstone Church, it is our vision to shine a light and love our neighbors. You can learn more about Cornerstone on our website at cccduncannon.com. We also still have inventory to sell! Stay tuned for an announcement for an upcoming Yard Sale! All proceeds will benefit Cornerstone’s Be-nevolence Fund and Austin’s Angel Fund, in memory of Austin Forrer. We aren’t yet sure what God has planned for us next, but we do know that when He closes a door, He provides an even bigger opportunity. Until then, thank you for being a neighbor and friend and we look forward to supporting this community in new ways.Your friends, Feels Like Home Team

What does five meals for 162 people in two weeks look like? Let me tell you, it is a LOT of “fishes and loaves,” or in our case, chicken, sausage,

and ground beef! Cornerstones food ministry has grown by leaps and bounds since our first distribution on March 28. We have grown so much that we had to split distribution into two separate delivery weekends. That means that our team of six to seven volunteers are cooking every day. To maintain social distancing and give our team a break, we rotate half of us on Monday and Wednesday, the other half Tuesday and Thursday, Fridays are a hodgepodge of who-ever is available. Every Saturday morning two to four of us meet at the church to pack boxes of casseroles, soups, and chickens to hand off to our dedicated delivery drivers who deliver to between two and five different families in the community.

These are families with different stories, but they are all being shown God’s love in the face of COVID19. Whether they have experienced loss of income temporarily, perma-nently, or are simply not sure what is happening, they are grateful to receive meals. We have even been able to deliver meals to at least six families within our church or commu-nity that have had new babies in the middle of all of this.

Let me outline what a typical meal distribution looks like, because when you think of what it takes to create meals for 55 families (160+ people), it can be difficult to imagine …

For Mother’s Day, we made 60 whole roasted chickens, 75 baked potatoes, 30 pans of stuffing, 30 bags of tossed salad, and 30 quarts of homemade rice pudding. (Beth Fry made countless batches of rice pudding three days in a row to have enough for each family!) In addition to that meal, we also provided a sausage potato soup, creamy chicken pasta casserole, barbeque, and chicken rice soup. Our team can roast 24 chickens at a time when we use our roasters and the ovens! Keep in mind, this was just one of the two groups we serve twice a month.

Speaking of chicken, our ministry has been blessed time and time again with donations that were exactly what we needed, exactly when we needed them! When we were trying to come up with a “special menu” for Mother’s Day, Mission Central, located in Mechanicsburg, contacted us, looking for an organization to accept a donation of a full pallet of chickens. That’s more than 2,000 pounds of chicken! Over the following weeks, our team very carefully planned meals that centered around chicken. We served chicken rice and chicken corn soup, creamy chicken pasta casserole, baked chicken parmesan casserole, and this week, we even served a chicken shepherd’s pie! We have successfully used every one of the chickens we received!

The “Fishes and Loaves” team is not sure what the future holds for our community. We do know that we will con-tinue to make meals for as long as there is both a need and a way for us to continue to show Christ’s love through providing meals. If you or someone you know needs meals from our team, you can go to our website at www.ccc duncannon.com/serve to complete the form. If you would like to donate to this important ministry, you can donate to the PayPal account at PayPal.me/cccduncannon, and mark the donation “meals,” or you can send a check to the church and mark the memo “meals.” Your donations will be used to continue to help families within our church and community.

Stay tuned next newsletter for the story of how God pro-vided exactly what we needed, when we didn’t even think ask for it!

This is an image of what one week’s worth of meals looks like.

It’s your birthday!

God says we should love every-body—but some people need to be loved from a distance.

This community of ours … you’re the best! Katrina Boyer

I’m kind of in awe tonight. My God is so good. I’ve been involved in feeding families throughout my community for more than two months now. Because COVID19 is a

beast and, well … you know.

Anyway, the Shermans Creek Inn sold VERY COOL Crown Royal face masks for a donation. They sold out of them be-fore I could even get one for myself! (Note: I believe more masks are avialable now.)

The Inn wanted to donate the proceeds to an organization in their community—well, they chose Cornerstone Chris-tian Church’s Food Ministry to receive the donation. Not only did they donate the proceeds of the mask sales, they matched that donation with their own donation!

Thank you for your generosity and support! Your donation will help us feed more than 50 families over the next two weeks! May God bless you and your business!

And, the Shermans Creek Inn is currently open for take out. Maybe dinner tonight? My team and I can’t wait to be able to enjoy dinner at the Shermans Creek Inn as soon as restaurants are fully open and able to have us!

VBS is going VIRTUAL!Hope Coombs, Kids Ministry Director

In a season where so many summer activities are being cancelled, we simply couldn’t completely cancel VBS, the highlight of our summer. While we cannot gather to do

VBS in a large group in person together, we CAN meet in smaller groups. For every registered child, we’ll be putting together a box filled with detailed instructions and every-thing you need to do VBS activities at home. Combined with daily videos online and small group check-ins, your box will guide you through a super fun week of Virtual VBS. As you feel comfortable, we encourage you to invite over some neighbors and friends to do these fun activities together. Stay tuned to our website and social media sites for all the details and registration releasing soon! We are so excited to FOCUS on what’s most important this summer at Virtual VBS!

Internet safety tipsKatrina Boyer

Staying safe online is important under normal circumstances. During a pandemic, when most of us are spending more time than ever on our

devices, it becomes critical.

There are four things that we need to be particularly aware of as we do more online.

1 On any device, making sure your operating systems and virus protections are updated regularly is critical. In addition, be sure that you download updates to any applications that you may have downloaded. Failing to update these systems leaves your device open to hack-ers, malicious programs, and system flaws that could leave your device vulnerable.

2 Passwords are another critical piece to safely using the Internet. Keep in mind the following when you are creat-ing “stronger” passwords:a The longer the better—at least eight characters, pref-

erably many more.b A mix of capital and lower-case letters, numbers, and

special characters. i Instead of the letter “a” use “@”.ii Instead of the letter “i” use the letter “l” or even

“|” or “/”.iii Instead of an “s” use “$”

c One thing you can do is write out a sentence that is about yourself: “In 2019 I went on my first cruise, it was GREAT!” i Use the first letter of that sentence to come up

with “I2Iwomfc-iwGr8” ii You could make it even more of a challenge and

make it “!2Iw0M1stC-iWGr8!”.d Your email password may be the most important

password of all to keep “strong” and updated. i If your email password is compromised, it can

allow a criminal to “change” many of your other passwords to critical accounts.

ii Changing your email password on a regular basis is also a good idea.

e Keeping the password to your home WiFi is also another one that should be extra long and strong.i If your WiFi password is compromised and gets

into the wrong hands, those individuals may have the knowledge to spy on all the other devices using the network—they can even capture key-strokes if they are “good” enough.

ii Incidentally, using a public WiFi is a bad idea, especially when you are accessing important financial websites.

f Changing the passwords to your most important

financial pages and shopping sites at least 2-3 times a year is also a really good idea.

g Do not use the same password for multiple logins. Use a different password for every site.

3 Security questions are another topic that is important to keep nice and secure. a Use questions that are not easily discoverable on

social media. b You can even make up random answers to the

questions, nobody said that the answers have to be truthful—you just have to make sure that you put the same answer in when you need it.

c If you are able, making up your own very challeng-ing questions is also a great option.

4 When you are putting your personal information on a website, be sure that the site is both reputable, and secure. a If you are shopping on a new site, search the name

of the company in your favorite search engine, and add the words “review,” or “complaints.”

b Check www.bbb.org or other similar site to see if they have complaints about the company, and what their rating is, if they have one.

c Check the web address for the site you are putting your personal information into. i Make sure that the site starts with https, not

http—that “s” tells us that the site is secure.ii Look for the site’s privacy information, make sure

that you are comfortable with how they will be using your information.

iii Look for the site’s security certificates; they should be valid, and you should be comfortable with the information you find there.

d Use a traditional credit card, or prepaid card if you can; that way if your card is compromised, you will not have to worry about access to your cash in a bank while the matter is resolved.i Be sure that you check your statements regularly

to ensure that your card has not had unauthor-ized transactions.

ii If you find unauthorized transactions, be sure that you report them right away, you have a limited time to notify the institution. Otherwise you may be liable for the unauthorized purchases.

Many of us are using the Iinternet more and more. Us-ing it safely will go a long way in protecting your personal and financial information. If you have questions about the information contained in this article, feel free to contact me at [email protected] or 717-514-2375.

Page 8: THE CONNECTION - Amazon S3 · 2020-05-29 · The “Fishes and Loaves” team is not sure what the future holds for our community. We do know that we will con-tinue to make meals

Hey, what’s cookin’?Pam Hoover

During these months we’ve been “quarantined” in our homes, most of us have

been doing a lot more cooking than usual. With a lot of restaurants closed completely or open just for takeout, we’ve had to read through those cookbooks on our shelves, search the Internet for some new dish, or maybe called mom for one of grandma’s family recipes.

I know Cornerstone is blessed with many great cooks. There’s evidence of that at our potluck meals, plus our newest ministry, our “Meal Team,” has been preparing meals for many people and families in our community these past few weeks.

It’s been 13 years since our first cookbook was published, and a few people had the idea to do another one since we’ve been spending more time in the kitchen. I’ll be col-lecting recipes in the next few weeks and compiling them into a church cookbook that we can use as a fundraiser for our Reach ministries.

There are Recipe Collection Sheets below and on the next page, plus there will be extra sheets available at the

church office if you happen to stop by the church building. I can also send you a PDF file to print out. If you don’t have a printer, simply mail, text, or email your recipes to me (405 Cassell Street, Marysville, 17053; 717-829-5211; or [email protected]). Feel free to submit as many recipes as you want, and include comments with them if you’d like, such as “This recipe was handed down from my great-grandmother” or “This recipe is great for picnics/large crowds/potluck suppers” or

“These cookies are my kids’ favorite.”

I hope to send everything to the publisher in September so the books will be back to us in plenty of time before Christmas. I have not researched the price with the pub-lisher yet, but based on the cost of the previous cook-book, the price will probably be $10–$12. For those of you who are currently working or those who will be going back to work eventually, I encourage you to take orders at work (if your employer allows), plus sell to your friends and family members. And these will make great Christmas presents!
