    From the Executive Director

Looks like it maybe time to pull out the old crystal ball and see what is in store for the Indiana ReadyMixed Concrete Industry in 2010. Sorry, but Ashley dropped ball and broke it. Maybe if we take a look atwhere we have been, we can get an idea of where we are headed.

It is estimated that the U.S. has 7,000 ready mixed concrete plants across the nation, producing concretedelivered to the job site in 80,000 mixer trucks. The value of this product is estimated to be over 30 billiondollars nation wide. Ready mixed concrete consumed 75 percent of all Portland Cement used in the U.S.This makes concrete one the widest used building materials in the construction industry. The 2009 midyear production reports are in, and thru July, production is at over 150,000,000 cubic yardsthat is 28.4percent less than the same point last year.

Closer to home, Indianas production has dropped off as well. Since 2000, when production topped8,111,000 cubic yards, that was 2.1 percent of the national total. Indiana then peaked in 2004 at8,225,000 cubic yards and at 2.0 percent of the U. S. total. We have now fallen in 2008 to 6,318,000 cu-bic yards and are now 1.8 percent of the nationwide total. Production data for the first half of 2009 in Indi-ana is not available at this time, but I think it is safe to say it will be down from 2008 production levels aswell.

Back to the original question. What does the future hold for the industry? Most of the experts across thenation agree that we have reached the bottom and things are on the way back up from here. That seems

to be where the agreement ends. Some believe we will see improvement in early 2010 and others arelooking at late 2010 and a few think it will take until 2011 before we see real recovery. It currently lookslike a very tough winter ahead. In Indiana, we do have some shining stars that other states dont have. We

have the wind farms, the increased use of concrete in local roads and streets, INDOT is bidding the firstoverlays with concrete on their system, the emergence of RCC, and the use of more concrete parking lots.

Our industry is very innovative and tough and we will weather this storm, as we have in the past. I believe that we can and will emerge from this recession as the building material of choice.

    Sincerely

    Jerry L. LarsonIRMCAExecutive Director

NRMCA Green-Star Program Continues Strong Growth Concrete Producers Across U.S. Certify Their Plants 301-587-1400, ext. 1155 or [email protected] Contact: David Ayers

Silver Spring, MD September 8, 2009 The National Ready Mixed Concrete Associations Green-Star Program continues its strong growthacross the United States as more and more concrete producers realize the benefits of striving toward environmental excellence throughout their batchplant operations.

In the past few weeks, a long list of NRMCA members representing ready mix plants from around the nation has earned the Green-Star label. Many of these newly certified plants are the first ones in their states to be so designated.

Concrete Supply Company, Rock Hill, SC and Charlotte, NC Vulcan Materials Company, Mission Valley, CA metro San Diego; the first Green-Star facility in Southern California Aggregate Industries, Bladensburg, MD; first Green-Star plant in Maryland

Aggregate Industries, North Las Vegas, NV; first in Nevada Aggregate Industries, Englewood, CO; first in Colorado Aggregate Industries, Belle Plaine, MN; first in Minnesota

Aggregate Industries, Elkhart, IN; first in Indiana Aggregate Industries, operating as Meyer Material Company, Kenosha, WI; first in Wisconsin Aggregate Industries, operating as Meyer Material Company, Streamwood, IL; first in Illinois Aggregate Industries, Grafton, MA Ready Mixed Concrete Company, Hickory and Denver, NC

Each of these companies has set a series of comprehensive environmental goals and uses forward thinking metrics to monitor and measure goalprogress, said Denise Corrales, chairperson of the NRMCA Environmental Task Group from member company CEMEX.

This program is a great example of the ready mixed concrete industrys commitment to environmental stewardship, added NRMCA Presi-dent Robert Garbini. The companies praised here and many more like them join an impressive list of committed ready mix operators. Im confidentthat as more of our members realize the benefits of the Green-Star Program, its popularity will only increase.

The Green-Star program is a plant-specific certification that utilizes an Environmental Management System (EMS) based on a model of con-tinual improvement. Potential Green-Star benefits include:Favored Status Customers favor doing business with organizations that are known to be protective of the environment.Increased Revenues Organizations will attain savings through efforts in pollution prevention and waste reduction.Improved Efficiency Sound, consistent environmental management methods will improve profits.Community Goodwill An organizations stance on environmental policy and action may be the most important factor in achieving and maintaining acommunitys goodwill.Reduction of Liability and Risk An organization is less apt to have environmental problems by using a pro-active EMS that documents results and iscommitted to continual improvement.

Through funding of the RMC Research & Education Foundation, NRMCA is currently working on Sustainable Concrete Plant Guidelines that willprovide additional guidance to ready mixed concrete companies for enhancement of their environmental footprint. The guidelines will provide detailson how concrete plants can further reduce energy consumption, carbon footprint, waste and potable water use along with increasing recycled material in

concrete. The guidelines provide practical solutions to meet goals outlined in the NRMCA Sustainability Initiatives (www.nrmca.org/sustainability)recently adopted by the NRMCA Board of Directors.

NRMCA, based in Silver Spring, MD, represents the producers of ready mixed concrete and the companies that provide materials, equipmentand support to the industry. It conducts education, training, promotion, research, engineering, safety, environmental, technological, lobbying and regula-tory programs.

    Xxx

NOTE: Since this release went out Aggregate Industries also received a Green-Star designa-tion for their Warsaw Plant.

    LEED Credits Points Required Certified 40-49Silver 50-59Gold 60-79Platinum 80+

News from IRMCA Promotion Manager, Ashley Frantz

In my previous article on addressing several green building standards I discussed energyefficiency relating to ICFs (Insulting Concrete Forms). In the July 2009 Issue of The Concrete Word I focused my attention on possible points directly available pertaining

to the US Green Building Councils Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).I focused on how the Industry can earn these points for new construction relating to ICFs.

As stated prior, green is not going away, so lets educate ourselves on the greenmovement. Depending on location, concrete homes use an estimated 44 percent lessenergy to heat and 32 percent less energy to cool than homes built with other materials.

The following are points that can be gained indirectly by using ICFs - look at the July 2009 issue for points that canbe gained directly .

Sustainable Sites Credit 5 Protect or Restore Habitat (1 Point)This credit can help protect the habitat on a construction site. The bracing of ICFs is typically installed only on theinterior of the structure and minimal construction activity occurs outside the perimeter with the use of ICFs.Sustainable Sites Credit 7 Landscape and Exterior Design to Reduce Heat Islands, Non-Roof (1 Point) ICF walls provide designers with greater flexibility when choosing exterior finish materials, including light colored andhighly reflective finishes.Energy & Atmosphere Credit 2 Renewable Energy (3 Points)Using ICFs as a appropriate design. The energy performance of a building is improved along with the total energyuse of a building will also be reduced, resulting in a given amount of renewable energy generation will make up alarger percentage of total energy.

Energy & Atmosphere Credit 6 Green Power (1 Point) As the energy performance of a building is improved with an appropriate design using ICFs, the total energy use of abuilding will also be reduced. As a result, the cost to purchase a green power contract will be reduced.Materials & Resources Credit 7 Certified Wood (1 Point) Wood framing is reduced with ICF construction. As a result, the incremental cost to use certified wood products isalso reduced.Materials & Resources Credit 8 Durable Building (1 Point) ICFs are highly durable and accommodate several water damage protection strategies (for damp-proofing and wa-

terproofing) that can be practiced on a site specific basis. Indoor Environmental Quality Credit 3 Construction IAQ Management (2 Point) ICFs release zero VOCs and/or air borne particulates post-construction and any adhesive and/or caulkings requiredduring construction can be met using low VOC levels. This leads to an improved IAQ for workers and occupants dur-ing construction. In addition, ICFs are moisture resistant and will not promote the growth of mold and mildew en-suring that the IAQ standards can be met before occupancy.
