An astonishing 94% of pupils at the College secured at least 5 A-C grades this Summer. This was up by 24% from the previous best for the school, in 2010. When English and Maths are included, this rose by 29%. We are waiting for confirmation that this places us as the most improved school in the Country. 61% of pupils gaining 5 A-C including English and Maths is above the National average and exceeds the FFT (Fisher Family Trust) target for the top 25% of simi- lar schools by 15%. Excellent preparation for the final written examina- tion in English meant that pupils secured good GCSE passes, despite changes to the grade boundaries of Controlled Assessments. We will not be complacent. We recognise that we have delivered massive improvements but that we can still do better. Our objective for our 2013 cohort is to secure 95% 5A* - C's and 70% including English and Maths. PIXL 'partners in excellence' NomineesPIXL stands for 'performance in excellence' and is an organisation of over 250 schools that share prac-tice in order to raise attainment. Crown Woods is the most improved PIXL school between 2011-2012. Three Crown Woods pupils; Matthew Birmingham (Ashdown), Sebnem Koca (Sherwood) and Mike Nahimana (Delamere), have been nominated to receive a PIXL award, we wish them luck.

Pupils Making the Most ProgressThe following pupils made truly exceptional progress from when they entered the school at year 7. The Government expect pupils to make three levels of progress. Four levels is very good. Five levels is therefore exceptional, although impossible for our most able pupils who were at level 5 on entry.

Dami nominated for special award for determination!Oluwadamiliola AgunbiadeDami suffers from albinism, severe sight loss and is on the Autistic Spectrum. He has a statement of SEN. He came to Crown Woods with well below average SATs scores and found the size and routines of the school very challenging. Dami had difficulty remaining seated in class and would often have outbursts of temper. However, by the end of Year 9 Dami had overcome many of these 'obstacles', as he saw them. He transformed into an extremely hardworking, in-dependent, sensible and responsible member of his school. The net result being a good collection of GCSE results and a highly respected student. He contrib-utes enormously to the college community and the positive, inclusive ethos and he is a delightful young man. Dami achieved the following qualifications:English CEnglish Literature CMaths BCore Science DAdditional Science BGeography CBTEC Business MeritALAN numeracy pass at level 2This gave him 9.5 A-C grades or their equivalent.

An Olympic year in Crown Woods College!Crown Woods College was first contacted in September 2011 by the 2012 Ceremonies Committee to be told we had been selected as the only secondary school in Greenwich to play a part in the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Games.

The reason for our selection was the links Crown Woods College had built with the Greenwich Olympic Champions, this started our pupils awareness of the games by hosting a week full of Olympic cultural activities culminating in a performance for parents, pupils and staff based on the Olympic values.

Alongside this, Ms. Westergaard had contacted Chris Roberts (leader of Greenwich Council) to offer the service of CWC pupils in the new performance space in Woolwich. We were the only school to approach the council in this way.

From September we met with representatives from the Ceremonies Committee to plan the involvement of our children.

During the Autumn term, Isobel Turner (previous Yr13 student) attended the new Velodrome on the Olympic site to paint part of the official finishing line! She met Sir Sebastian Coe as well as some Olympic cyclists, a very exciting day!

Isobel was our Young Olympic Ambassador and has been a part of high level meetings deciding how young people across London can benefit from the legacy of the 2012 Games.

The excitement really began in January when choreographers from the Ceremonies Committee arrived to audition 100 CWC pupils. It was quite informal, but the children were very nervous. They all performed well and were a credit to Crown Woods.

We had a long wait – almost until Easter – to find out who had been selected. Finally we were able to give pu-pils the good news, as well as the disappointing news for some. From the 100 who auditioned, 37 were selected to participate.

Meanwhile in February, we met with a representative from the Japanese national Volleyball team who were

interested in using our facilities for training during the Games in July. This went ahead and I’m happy to announce they won Bronze! As a thank you they left us all their equipment and balls.

In March we had our fundraising day for Sports Relief when we raised a total of £1,349.39. A great effort by everyone.

Shortly after receiving the news from the auditions, a group of 12 pupils from all schools and every year group visited the Copperbox (Handball arena) on the Olym-pic site. Everyone had a great day and the children really enjoyed participating in sports in a real Olympic venue!

On 25th June we held our Olympic Sports Day with pupils receiving Gold, Silver & Bronze medals for participating in events. There was even a special Olympic podium built for the occasion!

In June our school was allocated over 200 tickets for various Olympic events. These tickets were awarded to those pupils who were unsuccessful in the auditions back in January, as well as to pupils in the home schools by their HoS for attendance, achievement & progress.

Crown Woods pupils were honoured and excited to take part in this amaz-ing event. Well done and thank you to all pupils, parents/carers and staff who helped make this experience possible.

Next year we will be involved in an Olympic legacy project with all schools in our cluster. This is called the New Eltham Masterclasses. We will be working with students from Ravensbourne College to make a film based on what we will be left with once the media circus has left town, ‘This is our Greenwich’, and we want to share the legacy! It will include a history focus with a premier of the film in the Summer term 2013.
