Welcome to

Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy

It is with an enormous sense of pride that I welcome you to Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy as Executive Principal.

We are a values-driven Academy with an unshakeable belief in human potential and are proud of all our students, in particular, our Arden young men and women who are role models and leaders for all our year groups. We have the highest expectations of them in terms of academic achievement, personal development, attitude, conduct, attendance and appearance.

Our Post 16 Centre, Arden, is highly successful, offering an extensive range of A Level and vocational courses. This, combined with extracurricular activities and personal development programmes, provide a rich experience and enhance applications to universities, apprenticeships and future employers.

We ensure that all our students receive specialist support in terms of careers, future training and making informed university choices, including a substantial guidance programme for UCAS applications, 1:1

mentoring from business leaders, and work-experience placements. When students leave us they are fully equipped to lead successful adult lives and are able to embrace the challenges of higher education, with many gaining places at Russell Group universities, securing apprenticeships and employment.

It is an immense privilege to lead such a highly skilled and dedicated team of staff, all of whom are focussed on students’ academic progress, character development, happiness and well-being. We know that our young adults face many challenges, choices and anxieties in their later teenage years and our teachers, tutors and pastoral staff are an inspiring, reassuring and constant presence in our young people’s lives and support them to make the right choices, discover who they are and what they want to be.

As a Stationers’ school and part of a multi-academy trust, students have access to an incredible range of opportunities in education, industry and commerce. The commitment of the Governors and

Trust members is outstanding. They work tirelessly to provide advice, financial support, work experience, mentoring, apprenticeships and enrichment opportunities. ‘Stationers’ students’ are highly regarded by further education institutions and employers.

Please do visit us on our open evening and take the opportunity to meet staff and talk to our young men and women. We very much look forward to welcoming you.

Why Arden?

We recognise that the choice of Post 16 provider is a big decision in young people’s lives. Where they decide to study for the next two years will, to some extent, determine their university and apprenticeship applications and indeed their future career decisions. It is important to us that parents are involved in this decision making process particularly given the nature of today’s competitive global market.

We encourage students and their families to visit us on our open evening to fi nd out more about our community, our academic and vocational courses and our state of the art facilities. Here you will have the opportunity to ask questions of both the staff and student body regarding courses and student life here at Arden. Following a successful application, we will invite prospective students to attend an orientation day where they will meet their teachers and fellow students, experience lessons and learn more about Arden.

Arden has a proven track record of guiding our students into their preferred futures. Whilst the vast majority seek to move onto university and are successful in doing so, a growing number are moving directly onto higher apprenticeships. The breadth and depth of our academic and extra curricular provision ensures that they are ready for whichever pathway they choose.

Time after time Arden produces well rounded, independent young adults ready to make their way in the world. We look forward to meeting you to discuss how we can do the same for you.

Academy Performance

In 2018 we once again celebrated a strong set of academic and vocational results with 35% of students attaining A*- B and an overall pass rate of 97%.

Our higher ability students excelled once more in 2018. These students, who had an overall GCSE points score equivalent to a grade 6, secured an A*- B rate of 70% in A Level courses.

This was the fi rst year where the majority of A level courses were linear and BTEC qualifi cations included substantial external examination. We are rightly proud of the successes of our students.

For more details on our 2018 and 2019 outcomes please see the Arden pages on our website: www.scwa.org.uk

Stationers’ Digital Media Centre

A £500,000 refurbishment and investment project has transformed two classrooms in the William Morris building into a multi-media digital centre to rival any newsroom, magazine or creative technology company. The industry standard equipment and contemporary furniture gives the Centre a very professional feel, providing students with the opportunity to learn in a realistic work related environment. Opened in 2017, the project is the culmination of two years’ collaboration and was made possible by the generosity of sponsorship and donations from The Stationers’ Company.

The Centre is resourced to enable students from across all age and ability ranges to produce their own fi lms, podcasts or print media. Students work on exciting projects, some in collaboration with Ravensbourne University.

How to choose courses

Choosing the right courses can be daunting. The decisions you make now will impact on what degrees you can read and which Universities will make you off ers. Below is our guidance on making good decisions that will ensure your future progression.

1. Choose a subject YOU enjoy and are enthusiastic about, not one someone else wants you to choose. You are the one that will be studying the courses for 2 years, no one else.

2. If you know what degree or career you’d like to pursue, fi nd out if specifi c A Levels are required. For example, to become a doctor you will need to study Chemistry and Biology whilst if you wish to become an Architect you will need to study Maths, Physics or Chemistry along with a visual arts A Level. Please note, Lawyers and Accountants do not need to study law or accountancy at A Level though you may wish to in order to get a sense of whether you really wish to pursue the career.

3. You have the opportunity to study new subjects such as Sociology, Psychology and Government and Politics. They are great subjects and particularly well taught in Arden, but do some research about the courses and make sure they are really for you, rather than choosing them simply because they are new.

4. BTECs are a great option, particularly if you prefer coursework over exams as a least 50% of all BTECs are assessed through coursework. There is however always at least one exam which must be passed in order to gain a Level 3 qualifi cation.

‘Technology matters! Understand how it will impact your lives.‘Amali de Alwis, CEO, Code First:Girls

‘Work hard from day one. Find out how you revise best and build your revision time around that and try to do exam practise as much as possible.‘Ayse

How many subjects can I study?

We off er a very broad Level 3 curriculum which is reviewed every year in order to ensure we meet the needs of our community. With the recent reform of A Levels we enrol students on to 3 A Level courses (4 for students with an average Grade 8 or higher) or vocational subjects of equivalent size.

Entry requirements

Whilst we understand that applicants may have a strong desire to study a particular subject we have devised entry requirements based on national success rates in Level 3 qualifi cations. This is to ensure that students enrol on courses they are most likely to succeed in and that will provide them with a pathway into Higher Education or Higher Apprenticeships.

Along with the general entry requirements, individual subjects have specifi c requirements that represent the demands of each subject. Please see our website for entry details.

Academic study programmes

The general entry requirements for an A Level study programme is an average GCSE points score of 5 or more obtained from 5 or more GCSEs including Mathematics and English Language. Each subject will also have a specifi c entry requirement. Details of which can be found on our website.

Vocational study programmes

The general entry requirement for a vocational study programme is an average GCSE points score of 4.5 or more obtained from 5 or more GCSEs including Mathematics and English Language. We recognise Level 2 BTEC qualifi cations when considering applications to vocational courses using the following scale:Distinction* = 7,Distinction = 6,Merit = 4.5,Pass = 3.5.

‘High-quality teaching, combined with a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The support I received from the teachers was superb!’ Feyi

Case Studies

“I was taught to work hard and always aim high. The work ethic I honed in Arden is something I will always carry around with me. Also, the importance of independent study was emphasised which now helps me a lot.”

Ayse Topcu 12 A*-C at GCSE; AAB at A Level, now studying Professional Musicianship (Vocals) at BIMM Institute in London.

‘Arden prepared me for university by giving me a positive mental attitude towards study. Through the workload of homework and classwork, I became more adapted to coping with the more arduous tasks of university. Moreover, I learnt important skills such as team work and being able to persevere in times of adversity.

My advice is to use free periods wisely, make notes and revise recent topics; use past papers; ensure you take advantage of homework and additional lessons and use them to your benefit.’

Feyi Kolapo studying Medicine at King’s College London, SCWA Delamere student, gained 10 GCSEs A* - B grades, chose Arden for Post 16 A Levels AAAA in Biology, Chemistry, Psychology and Maths. His ambition is to become a doctor.

Enrichment and Extra-curricular Opportunities

We run a full programme of enrichment opportunities, not only to enhance learning, but also to enable students to pursue deeper learning in areas they are passionate about, to develop particular skills and interests, develop independence and to enjoy new and exciting opportunities and experiences.

Students can participate in a number of organised activities including the SILVER and GOLD Duke of Edinburgh award programmes. Post 16 students also support the Academy enrichment programme for younger year groups by running after-school clubs and activities.

We encourage students to be independent in their pursuit of deeper learning by facilitating them in setting up their own clubs and societies in whatever area they are interested in. It is through this process that the all important soft skills of leadership and organisation are learnt and developed.

Arden students studying the creative and visual Arts are encouraged to use Wednesday afternoons to makeregular visits to museums, exhibitions, theatre and musical performances in order to build upon their theoretical and practical understanding of their subjects.

We continue to encourage competitive sport within Arden. Our dedicated PE department are happy to organise

fixtures in all sports where students can muster a full team. This varies from year to year. We currently have successful football and basketball teams.

Combined Cadet Force (CCF)

Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy is extremely fortunate to be one of only 24 schools in the whole of the UK to be able to offer a Royal Marines experience through the Combined Cadet Force (CCF). The majority of cadets join in either Year 10 or Year 12 making it a very viable option for students joining Arden.

The Combined Cadet Force is a Ministry of Defence sponsored youth organisation in the United Kingdom. Its aim is to “provide a disciplined organisation in a school so that students may develop powers of leadership by means of training to promote the qualities of responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and perseverance.

Volunteering

We believe that students should develop an understanding of their community and how they can contribute to it. To this end we have a large and successful peer mentoring programme within the Academy with over 50 Arden students providing academic and pastoral mentoring for lower school students. Mentors are trained and supported throughout the process enabling them to make a very real impact on the lives of those they mentor. We also support students in finding volunteering opportunities outside the Academy in a wide range of roles.

Dress code

Post 16 students are proud to wear business attire which reflects the purposeful and studious ethos of Arden. Details of the dress code can be found on our website.

Special Educational Needs and Disability Support

Students across all schools are supported by a team of staff including support for students with learning difficulties or physical disabilities. Interventions and support are tailored to individual needs and progressis closely tracked and monitored. We pride ourselves on developing successful partnerships between home and the Academy in order for every SEND student to achieve their potential.

Careers and Work Experience

At Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy we prioritise the future of our young people. Students are supported to make successful transitions when they leave the Academy whether into jobs, apprenticeships or university.

We have a specialist Adviser who works with Post 16 students and supports our work experience programme at the end of the summer term in Year 12.

As part of Leigh Academies Trust all of the academies are committed to the Investor in Careers Award and Stationers’ Crown Woods Academy is justifiably proud of having achieved the full award in 2014. Our links with the Trust and the Stationers’ Company provide a wealth of career development opportunities. Our students have access to mentoring schemes; business speakers; career talks; workplace visits; careers fairs and networking events; online resources; and open days at higher education institutions.

Student Leadership & Student Voice

We expect our learners to be active participants and leaders in their own right. We have several opportunities for you to voice your opinions and to make a difference. There is an Arden Council led by the President and Vice-President.

Within the Council all tutor groups are represented and we have responsibility posts for a Treasurer, Secretary and Events Secretary. Our Council members are trained in public speaking and leadership skills to ensure they are effective in what they set out to achieve. The Council also provide leaders for the 11- 16 small school’s councils. They offer advice and guidance to the younger years in how to run effective councils and make an impact.

Throughout the year we encourage Post 16 students to lead assemblies both in Arden and the 11-16 schools within the Academy as well as the opportunity to be peer mentors.

A large number of Arden student Ambassadors take part in various public events.
