WelcomeSince 1961 Caithness Glass has established a proud tradition of fine glass-making. At our original site in the far north of Scotland we

initially produced coloured vases and bowls in contemporary, popular styles.

The following year saw the introduction of the first Caithness Glass limited edition paperweights, ‘The Planets Set’, designed by Colin

Terris. These ground breaking abstract creations, and others that followed, succeeded in thrusting Caithness Glass to the forefront of

modern paperweight design.

Today we maintain our position as a world leader in the design and production of collectable glass paperweights and gifts. Each and

every piece is a unique work of art, designed by our talented designers and individually hand-crafted to the highest possible standards by

our skilled makers in the Crieff factory.

Calum McDougall

Calum started his career in 1977 with Perthshire

paperweights who specialised in millefiori and

lampwork designs. In 2002 he joined Caithness

Glass (following the closure of Perthshire), where he

has continued to create designs using the methods

that he had mastered, and has also fostered new

skills and techniques for making Caithness products.

Scott Sinclair

Starting his career at Caithness in 1991 as a glassmakers

‘helper’, Scott progressed to paperweight maker within 12

months. Now after 26 years, Scott has one of the highest

levels of skills and knowledge of glass at Caithness.

Following the move to Crieff, Scott has also taken charge

of the furnaces used in melting the glass for production –

a skill in itself.

Martin Murray

Martin has over 30 years experience as a glass cutter

and engraver. As a native Irishman his early training

was at Galway Crystal. After moving to the UK in 1974

to work at the Kings Lynn factory, Martin moved to the

Caithness Glass site in 1992. Martin has used his skills

and creativity to enhance the collection with a variety of

cuts and faceted finishes. Proud recipients of his work

include several members of the British Royal family!

Martin Campbell

Martin started work at the Caithness Oban factory in

1976 and later relocated to the main Perth factory where

his considerable glassmaking skills and knowledge were

put to good use. He has continued to create the highly

intricate Caithness designs and is now also a master with

the technique of sandcasting.

Robert McAteer

Robert spent a year learning the basics before being

promoted on to the maker’s bench where he made his

first paperweight “Mooncrystal”. Not only can Robert

make paperweights but he is also a master at making the

more sculptural pieces that Caithness produce including

large multi-colour bowls, sculptural fish and figurines.

Debbie Addley

Debbie started work at Caithness in 2008. Her main

responsibilities are making sure the paperweights are

correctly packed and sent out to customers. Debbie is

known as the night fairy as her hours of work are when we

have all finished for the day. She packs away all the days

production readying the space for the next days work.

Fraser Munro

Fraser first started in the Caithness factory in 1999 when

he was 16 years old, fresh faced from secondary school.

He worked as a helper then a paperweight maker. He

proved to be excellent at making the animals that were in

the range at that time, and specialised in making the large

elephants - these were very large and difficult to control

but Fraser made it look easy. In complete contrast, Fraser

is now a master at making dainty paperweights and is

being trained up by Martin as a cutter.

Allan Scott

Allan began as an apprentice Lampworker for

Perthshire Paperweights in 1975. He left to help John

Deacons form Jay glass in 1979. He joined Caithness

Glass in 1983 and set up the Lampwork department

where he designed and made Lampwork for

almost 25 years. He now works with Caithness on a

freelance basis to create Lampwork pieces.

Peter McDougall

Peter started his career at Strathearn Glass in 1967.

One year later Stuart Drysdale was starting a factory

exclusively devoted to Paperweights. Peter was asked

to join them and was to remain with the company until

its closure in 2002 attaining the position of Manager

and Head Craftsman. Peter started his own studio and

continued to make his own Paperweights. He closed

his studio in 2012 and now makes Paperweights from

the Caithness Factory in Crieff and also designs for

the Caithness range.

Helen MacDonald

Helen was born and brought up in Caithness, and after

training as a glass engraver soon became one of our

most prolific designers. Helen’s designs are frequently

abstract and very expressive, and she works closely

with the glassmakers, devising new techniques and

effects to realise her ideas. Helen was delighted to

return to the team after an absence of several years.

How a paperweight is made

1. Blocking the glass into shape using a hardwood block

2. Cutting bubbles and other imperfections out of the glass

3. Palleting the glass with a graphite pad to shape

4. Reheating the glass in the glory hole at 800°C turns the chilled hard glass back into molten glass

5. Picking up powder glass colour 6. Cutting the glass in with tools to make it easier to knock the finished paperweight off the iron

7. Separating the paperweight from the metal iron

8. Placing the paperweight into the annealing kiln where it takes up to 15 hours for it to cool down

9. Inspecting the paperweight for quality and design

10. Grinding the base of the weight on the rough and smooth diamond wheels to remove the excess glass where the paperweight joined the iron

11. Polishing the base on a cork wheel which makes the base clear and shiny once again
