I am writing on behalf of a very effective environmental group called "Save Our Forests and Ranchlands." This organization is dedicated to the acquisition and preservation of wildlife habitat and open space in the Cleveland National Forest.

You may know that the Cleveland National Forest is at risk. When the forest was established by Congress it contained numerous private inholdings, which have been maintained as ranches until recently. NOW, development pressures have reached the forest as these private inholdings are being offered for sale for residential development.

To lose these lands to residential development would compromise the biological integrity of the forest. The threat to the forest is very real. That is why I am supporting the efforts of Save Our Forests and Ranchlands.

Save Our Forests and Ranchlands is having a fundraising event in March. Your presence at this event would guarantee its success, which would help this organization in its, im~ortant effort to preserve one of the last remaining w1ld places in Southern California. I urge you to attend this important event.

Dear Mr. McFetridge:

I am writing in response to your letter regarding efforts to preserve the Cleveland National Forest through the acquisition of Roberts Ranch located near the Interstate 8 and state Route 79 interchange.

The city of Poway supports your committee's efforts to protect the vital vegetation and wildlife in the Cleveland National Forest. The City believes that it is critical to preserve open space resources within San Diego County so to protect and encourage the survival of sensitive plant and animal species. It is obvious that the acquisition of Roberts Ranch would protect the integrity of the Cleveland National Forest by enabling the native species to continue in an undisturbed habitat.

However, in order to acquire Roberts Ranch, I strongly encourage you to continue working with the County of San Diego Board of Supervisors since Proposition 117 funds may be available to the County for this type of project.

Your efforts to preserve the Cleveland National Forest is greatly appreciated.

WHEREAS , the Cleveland National Forest is home to a number of threatened or endangered animal and plant species including the Bald Eagle , Golden Eagle , Mountain Lion, Yellow Warbler , Englemann Oak and San Diego Thornmint; and

WHEREAS , the Cleveland National Forest is facing tremendous development pressures, which if not controlled , could destroy much of this invaluable ecological system.

NOW , THEREFORE, THE NATIONAL CITY COUNCIL DOES HEREBY RESOLVE:

1. To support the Forest Conservation Initiative which is intended to protect the Cleve land National Forest from urbanization; and

2. To request the San Diego County Board of Supervisors place the Forest Conservation Initiative in the next available ballot in order to provide San Diego County residents the opportunity to vote on this issue .
