Prayer of Invocation/Confession
Almighty God, we give You thanks for
the work You have done in this place.
We give You thanks for Your faithfulness
and for Your love. When we called on
Your name, You made Your Presence
known. When we prayed, You heard us.
When we preached Your Word, You were
in the midst. You have listened to our
confessions and You have forgiven our
sins. You have sent Your Holy Spirit to
heal and comfort. O Lord we proclaim
Your gospel to all people. We dedicate
our lives to Your service. Renew us by
Your Spirit. Grant that we may continue
to grow. Use us for Your glory. In the
name of Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with You and the
Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
Amen.
Praise the Lord! Praise the name of the
Lord! God has blessed us and brought us.
Praise the Lord! Give thanks to Him!
Opening Hymn of Praise Page 2
BLESSED ASSURANCE
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine;
Oh, what a foretaste of glory divine!
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His Spirit, washed in His blood.
(Refrain)
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song,
Praising my Savior all the day long.
Perfect submission, perfect delight,
Visions of rapture now burst on my sight;
Angels descending, bring from above
Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.
(Refrain)
Perfect submission, all is at rest,
I in my Savior am happy and blest;
Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.
(Refrain)

OFFERTORY PRAYER O God, we pray many prayers, for many
causes, and we thank You for hearing us.
Now, we pray one more prayer; that You
would grant us grace to give our tithes,
mission gifts and sacrificial offerings, so
that Your name will be glorified and
people will be blessed. Thank You for
another chance and may we seize these
moments, in such a spirit of gratitude and
worship, that we all might be blessed.
May our faith be deepened and Your name
glorified, again and again. Amen.
He sent redemption to his people; he has
commanded his covenant forever. Holy
and terrible is his name! The fear of the
Lord is the beginning of wisdom; a good
understanding have all those who practice
it. His praise endures forever!
Psalm 119:9-10

Leader: Dear Lord, thank You for drawing us, as a congregation, to You to become
Your church.
People: Thank You for our ancestors and those who listened to Your voice and
were obedient to Your call to organize this congregation for Your purpose.
Leader: Help us to teach our young Your ways and their history, so they will know
who you are and who they can be.
People: Inspire us with a vision for the future and use that vision to direct the path
of this congregation.
Leader: Help us to lean not on our own understanding but to lean on
every promise of Your Word.
People: Grant us the authority to conquer all divisiveness, and fill us with a desire
to love one another.
Leader: Lord please hide is in Your bosom and protect us from all evil and
from the wiles of those spirits that seek to destroy the peace You have
given us.
People: May Your Spirit continue to infuse our church with courage, hope, and
grace.
Leader: Teach us to know Your voice and give us the courage to obey it.
People: Lord, please continue to provide Your Church with a light for the
world.
Leader: We acknowledge that we did not choose You, but You chose us and
appointed us, to go and bear fruit…fruit that will last.
People: We praise You choosing us and calling us out of darkness into Your
wonderful Light.
Leader: As we move forward in this ministry, we recommit ourselves to the
principles of Your Word…to love the Lord our God with all our heart,
mind and soul.
People: To work for justice on behalf of those whose voices are not heard.
All: For this is how our God is glorified, that we bear much fruit, showing
ourselves to be His disciples. Amen.

“A charge to keep I have . . . to serve this present age!”
The Reverend Carolyn Ann Knight was born and raised in Denver,
Colorado; the second daughter of the late Edd and Dorothy Knight. She
received her early education in the public school system in Denver and the
Bachelor of Arts degree from Bishop College in Dallas, Texas with a major
concentration in English, philosophy and religion.
Her theological training began at Colgate Rochester Divinity School in
Rochester, NY; she later transferred to Union Theological Seminary in
New York City to study under her mentor, Dr. Cornel West. She was awarded the master of
divinity and master of sacred theology degrees from Union. Ms. Knight was admitted into the
Ph.D. program at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey, and is presently on leave from
that program of study. She holds the doctor of ministry degree from the United Theological
Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. In addition to these formal areas of studies, Ms. Knight pursued her
interest in law and politics by attending classes at Columbia University School of Law.
During the course of her academic studies, Ms. Knight was the recipient of many scholarships
and fellowships, among them the Benjamin E. Mays Fellowship for Theological Studies and the
United Negro College Fund Colorado Scholarship Award. In pursuit of the Ph.D. degree, Dr.
Knight was awarded a fellowship to cover all tuition costs.
Under the influence of her godfathers, the late Reverend M. C. Williams of Los Angeles,
California; the late Dr. Frederick G. Sampson of Detroit, Michigan; and her Spiritual father, the
late Dr. Samuel D. Proctor of New York City, Dr. Knight developed a love for preaching and
the pulpit. She preached her trial sermon and was licensed for the gospel ministry at the Mount
Gilead Baptist Church in Denver, Colorado under the leadership of The Reverend Acen L.
Phillips. Reverend Dr. Knight has served in the pastoral ministry in pulpits in Denver,
Colorado; Dallas, Texas; Rochester, and Harlem, New York. For many years she served as
assistant to the pastor of the Canaan Baptist Church of Christ in Harlem where she was
mentored in pastoral leadership, organizational strategy and finance by The Reverend Dr.
Wyatt Tee Walker, former chief of staff to Martin Luther King Jr. She is the founder and
president of “CAN DO!” Ministries; a progressive, preventive youth advocacy ministry that is
dedicated to the cultural, social, intellectual, and spiritual well-being of youth and young

adults. For ten years, Dr. Knight served as assistant professor of homiletics at The
Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta, Georgia where she had the primary
responsibility for teaching and training students in the art and craft of sermonic design,
development and delivery.
A preacher/pastor with scholarly interests, Reverend Knight has served as adjunct professor at
LaGuardia Community College and New York Theological Seminary. She served as the
permanent part-time professor of preaching at her alma mater, Union Theological Seminary in
New York City. Dr. Knight serves on numerous boards and committees; among them are
Harlem Congregations for Community Improvement, the Breast Examination Center of
Harlem, The Black Leadership Commission on AIDS, and the advisory board of the African
American Pulpit of Judson Press.
In constant demand as a preacher, speaker, and evangelist, Dr. Knight has been called sui
generis, a one-of-a-kind preaching voice for this generation. Cornel West says she is an “organic
intellectual rooted in the best of the prophetic African American preaching tradition.” She
travels extensively throughout the nation speaking at churches, conferences, and on college
campuses. The singular theme of her message and ministry is a better quality of life for the poor
and oppressed, particularly women and children. A voracious reader, Dr. Knight enjoys reading
the Classics, as well as books on history, medicine, law, philosophy, and African-American
history.
In addition to her activities and responsibilities as a preacher, Reverend Dr. Knight has been
signally honored for her outstanding career achievements, which include Outstanding Young
Women of America; The Dunlevy-Milbank Youth Council’s Community Service Award; The
Mary McLeod Bethune Award of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc.; The Community
Service Award from the Laurelton Chapter of the Negro Professional Business Women’s
Council; and the 1993 United Negro College Fund Alumni Award. In March 1996, Reverend
Knight was inducted into the prestigious College of Preachers by Morehouse College in Atlanta,
Georgia. She was also cited by Ebony magazine in November 1997 as one of America’s 15
Greatest African American Women Preachers.
A former amateur athletic track and field champion, Dr. Knight is an avid golfer in preparation
for the Mid-Amateur Women’s Golf Tournaments. She has a variety of interests and hobbies
which include reading, computer literacy, writing, music, traveling, power walking, step
training, and philosophical and political discussions. Dr. Knight is a Golden Life member of
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Quotes from Max Lucado's book...Out LIVE Your Life...
God longs to proclaim his greatness in all 6,909 languages that exist in the
world today. Pentecost makes this promise: if you are in Christ, God's
Spirit will speak through you. Let God unshell you. And when he does,
"make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been
given, and then sink yourself into that" (Galatians 6:4 MSG). Don't miss
the opportunity to discover your language.

October 2014 - “Grief Tool Box”
This month’s focus is on developing and/or maintaining a healthy grieving regimen. Read and commit to the suggested grief tools below.
1. Choose an exercise you will enjoy that will increase your heart rate like walking. Remember
before you begin any exercise consult your doctor to discuss which activity is best for you. If you are already exercising, you may want to increase the intensity by setting new goals for yourself.
2. Drink water. It’s important during bereavement to drink plenty of water to stay healthy. Your body is about 60 percent water and needs plenty of replenishment. While you are grieving your focus is on your inward feelings and you may not feel thirsty. Remember, to drink at least five eight-ounce cups of water daily. Remember to help those you love to do the same.
3. Laugh. Humor is one of the most healing gifts of humanity. It helps to restore hope and assists us in managing the pain of grief. Laughter helps us feel peace in both mind and body. Close your eyes right now. Try to visualize the smile and laughter of the person who died.
Scripture: “The Lord of host is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge”. Psalm 46:7 Prayer: Dear Lord, help me to take care of my body and my spirit while I am mourning. I desire to feel better although I am full of sorrow. In the Name of Jesus, Amen.

A Brief History of New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church
In 1924 a few officers and members of Mount Beulah, banded together and organized a church
which they named Mount Lebanon Baptist Church. Two ministers worked together in the
organization of the church. This small faithful group of people purchased a lot at 20470
Wisconsin in Detroit. More people moved into the area, joined Mount Lebanon Baptist Church
and the name was changed to First Baptist Church.
Reverend Smith served as Pastor until 1929. Reverend Theodore Williams served from 1931
until 1935. The church called Reverend Pyles who served about three years and rebuilt First
Baptist. He was unable to finish rebuilding the church because God called him from labor to
reward. Reverend Sandy Gibson, who was the assistant to Reverend Pyles, carried out his
term and was elected for a short period in 1939.
Reverend Charles B. Heath was called as pastor in the spring of 1939. Much was accomplished
under Reverend Heath’s administration. Due to the fact that there were two churches in Detroit
with the same name, Reverend Heath had the church change its name from First Baptist to
New Prospect Baptist Church on January 7, 1945.
In 1953 the church voted to enlarge their present building. The members were supportive of
this effort and contributed considerably. In March 1960, the members borrowed ten thousand
dollars and made the down payment to purchase the 6330 Pembroke building. Reverend Heath
pastored the church for twenty eight (28) years until his death in 1967.
In February 1968, the church called Reverend Dr. S. Leon Whitney from Jackson, Mississippi.
Under his pastoral leadership an addition to the Pembroke Property was made and the facilities
were expanded to its current structure. There was much growth under Reverend Whitney until
his death in December 1990. His son, Reverend Dr. Keith L. Whitney assumed the pastoral
leadership from 1991 until 1996. Reverend Randolph F. Henlon who was the Assistant Pastor
at the time served as Interim Pastor from 1996 until March 1999.
On March 1, 1999, history was made in Detroit. Reverend Wilma Robena Johnson, a female
assistant pastor at Hartford Memorial Baptist Church, was elected Senior Pastor of New
Prospect Missionary Baptist Church. A new light appeared in the community.
THIS IS THE CHURCH WHERE THE SPIRIT OF UNITY ABIDES.
THIS IS THE CHURCH WHERE THE VISION LIVES AND SHINES!
