WHAT IS PEMEM

The Pentecost Men’s Ministry (PEMEM) is a ministry that caters for the interest of all the men in The Church of

Pentecost. It was established by the International Executive Council of the Church in 1997 to provide a forum for

gathering and teaching the Church’s male population in all aspects of Christian life.

WHAT PEMEM IS ABOUT

OUR GOAL

Our goal as PEMEM is to grow a vibrant, Christ-centered, life-changing, kingdom-focused Men’s ministry in our

Church in order to present every man, fully equipped and complete before Christ.

2 Tim 3:16-17: “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for

correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every

good work.”

1 Chron. 26:6-8“Also to Shemaiah his son were sons born who governed their fathers’ houses, because they

were men of great ability. The sons of Shemaiah were Othni, Rephael, Obed, and Elzabad, whose brothers Elihu

and Semachiah were able men. All these were of the sons of Obed-Edom, they and their sons and their brethren,

able men with strength for the work: sixty-two of Obed-Edom.

To develop men to attain the highest level of Christian maturity, to enhance socio-economic and physical

development, impact society and win souls for Christ in their communities through acceptable professional,

business and work ethics.

CORE PRINCIPLES AND VALUES OF P.E.M.E.M.PEMEM IS A MINISTRY OF MEN CREATED IN

THE IMAGE OF GOD

“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created

them” (Genesis 1:27).

1. PEMEM IS A MINISTRY IN ASSOCIATION WITH GOD’S PROMISE

Divine promise of fellowship: God, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our

Lord, is faithful (1 Corinthians 1:9).

2. PEMEM IS A MINISTRY OF MEN WHO LIVE IN HARMONY

Live together in unity: “It is good and pleasant when God's people live together in peace” (Psalm 133:1).

3. PEMEM IS A MINISTRY OF MEN WHO LOVE TO PRAY

Praying Hands: “So, I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting their hands in a holy manner, without

anger and arguments” (1 Timothy 2:8).

4. PEMEM IS A MINISTRY OF MEN WITH POSITVIE ENCOURAGEMENT

Mutual Encouragement: “We should keep on encouraging each other to be thoughtful and to do helpful

things. Some people have gotten out of the habit of meeting for worship, but we must not do that. We

should keep on encouraging each other, especially since you know that the day of the Lord's coming is

getting closer” (1 Timothy 2:8).

5. PEMEM IS A MINISTRY OF MEN LIVING IN PEACE

Peaceful Relationship: “Try to live at peace with everyone! Live a clean life. If you don't, you will never

see the Lord. Make sure that no one misses out on God's wonderful kindness. Don't let anyone become

bitter and cause trouble for the rest of you” (Hebrew 12:14-15).

6. PEMEM IS A MINISTRY OF MEN WHO LOVE ONE ANOTHER

Brotherly Love: “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves”

(Romans 12:10).

7. PEMEM IS A MINISTRY OF MEN OF EQUALS

No Discrimination: In Christ, there is no difference between Jew and Greek, slave and free person, male

and female. You are all the same in Christ Jesus (Galatians 3:28).

8. PEMEM IS A MINISTRY OF MEN OF COURAGE

Be Courageous: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD

your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you" (Deuteronomy 31:6).

9. PEMEM IS A MINISTRY OF MEN OF INTEGRITY

Integrity and Honesty: “Righteousness guards the man of integrity, but wickedness overthrows the sinner”

(Proverbs 13:6).

10. PEMEM IS A MINISTRY OF MEN WHO TEACH

Education & Teachings: “I have singled him out so that he will direct his sons and their families to keep

the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just. Then I will do for Abraham all that I have promised”

(Genesis 18:19). Ephesians 6:4 also teaches that “Fathers, do not make your children angry, but raise them

with the training and teaching of the Lord.”

11. PEMEM IS A MINISTRY OF MEN WHO LOVE THEIR WIVES

Wife Lovers: “Husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself”

(Ephesians 5:28.).

12. PEMEM IS A MINISTRY OF MEN WHO PREACH THE WORD OF GOD

Preachers & Teachers: “Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and

encourage—with great patience and careful instruction” (2 Timothy 4:2).

13. PEMEM IS A MINISTRY OF MEN WHO LOVE GOD

Lover of God: “So love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and

with all your strength” (Mark 12:30).

14. PEMEM IS A MINISTRY OF MEN WHO LOVE CHURCH

Church Lovers: “I am the vine. You are the branches. Those who live in me while I live in them will

produce a lot of fruit. But you can’t produce anything without me” (John 15:5).

WHAT IS AN IDEAL MEN’S MINISTRY

Your ideal men’s ministry must be one that is Christ-centered, prayer and purpose driven, led by called, motivated

and trained leaders, open and relevant to all men with multiple entry points. The ministry must be sustained by

trusting relationships and balanced – spiritual growth, outreach and mission work. There is the need to have an

active and supportive Pastor. You must all have well planned meetings with a good line of communications.

Spiritual Commitments of an Ideal Men’s Ministry

An ideal men’s ministry must have Christian men, who as spiritual heads of our households, are honoring Jesus

Christ through prayer, worship and obedience to His Word, and who through the power of the Holy Spirit are

practicing spiritual, moral, ethical and sexual purity. The men must be committed to building strong marriages

and families through love, protection and biblical values. They must be seen to support the mission of their local

church, by honoring and praying for their pastor and by actively giving their time and resources. They reach

beyond any racial barriers to demonstrate the power of biblical unity. Finally, they influence the world, being

obedient to the Great Commandment (Mark 12:30-31) and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20).

How can this be achieved?

This will be possible if the men in the ministry:

1. Totally surrender their lives to Christ as their Savior and Master.

2. Develop a servant attitude, modeled after that of Jesus.

3. Become readers, knowers and doers of the Word.

4. Pursue vital, trusting relationships with other Christian men, understanding that they need each other, as

brothers to help them keep their Christian commitments. Being a band of brothers.

5. Participate in a Christ-centered, disciple-making men’s ministry in their church.

Responsibilities of PEMEM is building men for Christ

We need to create opportunities for men to build Christ-centered, trusting relationships in which they help, equip,

and encourage each other to:

1. Grow in Christ-likeness

2. Serve others in need

3. Evangelize the lost

The need to work harder with men?

Church Facts and Statistics Concerning Men

1. A typical church congregation draws an adult crowd that is 61% female, 39% male.

2. On any given Sunday in the U.S. there are 13 million more adult women than men in churches.

3. On an average Sunday almost 25% of married, church going women worship without their husband.

4. Midweek activities often draw 70% - 80% female participants, 20% - 30% male participants.

5. 90% of the boys raised in the church will abandon it by their 20th birthday – most don’t return.

6. The average man accepts the reality of Jesus Christ, but sees no value in going to church.

7. 90% of men believe in God and call themselves Christians, but only 1/3 attend church on Sunday.

8. A large number of church going men attend out of habit, unaffected by what they hear.

9. Quite a few men go to church simply to keep their wives/mothers happy.

10. The majority of men who attend church do nothing during the week to grow their faith.

11. Over 90% of Christian men have never shared their faith with another man.

12. Many churches are declining because men have stopped participating, growing and leading.

The question we need to ask ourselves as leaders today is “Are Our Churches Losing the Battle for the Hearts

of Men (husbands/fathers)?” If the answers is YES, what are we doing about it? This is the reason why we

have PEMEM.

DEALING WITH MEN

Men are Strategic

While men and women are created equal (Gen. 1:27), men are strategic (1 Cor.11:3, 9-11). Therefore, men

are the critical mission field in our communities. If churches will respond to create “male friendly,” intentional

outreach ministries to and for men, God’s order can be restored, marriages can be saved, families and

communities can be turned to Christ. As Steve Farrar suggests, “Men must lead the charge.”

A Challenge – Men Leading the Charge

Patrick Morley, Man in the Mirror Ministries, says that Christian men who are growing in Christ, are

spiritually leading their families, and are moving toward the center of God’s will with their lives, generally

have 5 things in common:

1. They have a daily quiet time, often in the early morning, during which they pray, reflect on

scripture and listen to God’s revelations for their daily lives.

2. They participate in weekly Bible study, in addition to Sunday School and church sermons.

3. They support the pastor and ministries of their local church, and actively attend and participate

using their time, talents and treasures.

4. They meet regularly with other Christian men for fellowship, encouragement, accountability,

outreach, discipleship, ministry and missions.

5. They have an active personal ministry, using their unique spiritual giftedness to:

a. reach the lost for Christ,

b. help family, friends and others grow in Christ, and

c. serve others in need through helps and missions.

Understanding Why Men are Strategic

Consider the following results of a survey completed a few years ago and reported by Focus on the Family

Publishing:

“If a child is the first person in a household to become a Christian, there is only a 4% probability that everyone

else in the household will follow. If the wife, mother is first to accept Christ, only a 17% chance the rest of the

family will. But if the man (the husband, the father, i.e the God’s Point Man) is the first person in a home to

become a Christian, there is a 93% probability that the rest of the family will follow.

Why must Leaders work harder to reach the men?

Sonderman suggests the following conditions of men. They serve as critical reasons why men should be

encouraged to join together to build authentic Christian brotherhood in the church.

Men don’t do “brotherhood” naturally. The American male is often:

1. Friendless …in a world of competition, comparison, isolation, individualism and self-sufficiency.

2. Emotionally Isolated…seeing himself as what he does, not how he feels, having heard since childhood

that men do not show emotions.

3. Confused over Masculinity…often an identity crisis with our ever-changing role models, needing to

discover their true masculine identity in Christ.

4. Success Driven…convinced that what he does and what he has is who he is.

5. Spiritually Searching…with hundreds of thousands responding to Christian events, retreats, conferences,

mission projects, during which large numbers are committing or recommitting their lives to Christ. Then

what?

Why does it seem easier with women?

Women Verses Men

1. Whereas women tend to enjoy getting together and sharing with each other, men don't necessarily think

about doing that.

2. Men tend to be more activity oriented and like to be involved in “projects.” But, by their nature, men often

isolate themselves relationally.

3. Our churches need to become “male friendly” places, with intentional disciple-making men’s

ministries…ministries in which men can “comfortably” come together to build trusting relationships,

through which they can help each other know and trust Christ and grow in His likeness. Such places should

the spaces:

a. where they can become true spiritual heads of their household (Eph 5:22-33).

b. where they can meet on a regular basis to worship with other men through song and prayer.

c. where they can share their walk with Christ, as well as their feelings, failures and fears.

d. where they can support the spiritual growth of youth in the church, and talk about ways to raise

godly children and grandchildren in a godless society.

e. where they can encourage each other to discover and use their unique spiritual gifts to serve others

for Christ and to boldly reach out and minister to other men in a lost world.

THE NEED FOR PEMEM

When Christ formed his men’s ministry, he selected men of all backgrounds to be united in Him. He taught

and encouraged them to minister to each other. Then He told His disciples to finish the work that the Father

had given Him to do. Likewise, Christ tells us to help each other to “grow up in Him” and then turn our eyes

to the mission fields before us. Therefore, the general objective of men’s ministry is to help each other become

godly, biblical men…men of integrity, intimacy, identity and influence (Sonderman). Men committed to

growing in Christ and doing His work. Accordingly, having a clear and agreed upon purpose and associated

objectives for a church’s Men’s Ministry will achieve the purpose for which it was established.

BUILDING AN EFFECTIVE PEMEM

The Purpose of The Church of Pentecost Men’s Ministry is to: Build Men for Christ

Our Primary Objective

Create opportunities for men to build Christ-centered, trusting relationships in which they help, encourage

and equip each other to:

(1) grow in Christ-likeness,

(2) serve others in need,

(3) and evangelize the lost

Where are we going?

Our Goal as a Ministry is to get men from where we are to -----------------where God wants us to be.

PEMEM MUST BE CHRIST-CENTERED

Men come together in churches for many reasons. These are often groups focused primarily on fellowship,

civic interest, programs and/or church work projects. While these “men’s clubs” in the church have value,

they are often program-driven and not a true ministry in which men are growing together in Christ and doing

His will.

To respond to men’s true spiritual needs, a successful men’s ministry must put Christ at the center and focus

on spiritual development, giftedness and outreach.

PEMEM MUST BE PRAYER AND PURPOSE DRIVEN

There has never been a mighty movement of God that did was devoid of prayer. Therefore, it is essential to

have the church’s men’s ministry be founded and fueled by prayer. The need for a men’s prayer team remains

constant even as other aspects of the ministry are adjusted accordingly. So, from the beginning, there must be

a group of men gathering regularly to pray for the needs of their church and their men’s ministry. Woodruff

reminds us that “Men will grow weary without the supernatural power of the Spirit of God, who grants

wisdom, encouragement and power for ministry to those who call upon Him.”

Having a clear and agreed upon vision and purpose for a church’s Men’s Ministry will help it stay on track

and focused on its strengths, and will serve as the basis for decision-making regarding ministry direction.

Your vision and purpose statements should be concise, measurable, and in harmony with church goals.

PEMEM MUST BE LED BY CALLED, MOTIVATED AND TRAINED LEADERS

As in any successful organization, capable leadership is essential. In spiritual leadership, men who lead must

first serve (Mark 10:42-45). While many godly men should take active leadership roles, the key man should

be called by God and gifted by the Holy Spirit to lead the Men’s Ministry. Other men gifted for leadership

should head segments of the ministry. Some of these men may subsequently become Men’s Ministry Leaders.

Identifying and calling these men is vital to achieving a vibrant and lasting ministry.

PEMEM MUST HAVE MULTIPLE ENTRY POINTS

Multiple entry points means it must be open to and culturally relevant to all men. The men’s group in the

church can sometimes be seen by other men of the church to be one dimensional in its focus and mission

work. This is often unintentional and may result from the good efforts of a small group called to a particular

work. However, to have wider appeal to the men of the church, the ministry should be seen as (and be) broad-

based in its outreach and open to all men.

HOW TO SUSTAIN THE MINISTRY IN YOUR LOCAL, DISTRICT OR AREA

1. Build Trusting, Christ-Centered Relationships. We agree strongly with Sid Woodruff when he says

that believers are not to be “lone rangers.” He refers to the many “one another” passages in the Bible

that tell us that men need each other for encouragement, accountability and spiritual growth (Proverbs

27:17, 1 Thessalonians 5:11, Romans 15:14, and Hebrews 10:24). A Christian man needs to surround

himself with trusted friends, who will be honest, transparent and confidential as weaknesses, struggles

and burdens are shared. Having these Christ-centered relationships are crucial to building and

maintaining an effective men’s ministry because men are far more interested in relationships than

programs.

2. Balanced – Outreach, Spiritual Growth, Equipping and Missions. Men’s Ministry should be balanced

– Ministry to Men and Ministry by Men. Rather than simply gathering men to just eat, and/or do work,

men should first see their role as brothers in Christ…. repenting, worshiping, praying, learning, sharing

together and helping each other to grow in Christ-likeness. The men’s ministry should incorporate

several methods for discipling men to spiritual maturity. This can include making your monthly

meetings less business and program oriented, and more focused on testimonies, teaching, praise and

small group prayer. You should use proven curriculum like Men’s Group and separate men’s Bible

study groups should be established and encouraged. Men should also be encouraged to come together

weekly in small accountability and prayer groups. These and other approaches will help fulfill

Proverbs 27:17: “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” In Life Way’s excellent Men’s

Ministry Manual, “Drawing Men to God,” Sid Woodruff identifies the four cornerstones of a balanced

men’s ministry:

a. Evangelize Men to Salvation and into the Church

b. Establish Men to Spiritual Maturity

c. Equip Men for Ministry

d. Extend Men on Missions

3. Well Planned Meetings. As Paul recorded in 1st Corinthians, God wants order in His church.

Therefore, men’s meetings should not be left to chance. Yes, it is true that through prayer and seeking

God’s direction, the Holy Spirit will guide the men’s gatherings. However, prayerfullyplanning ahead,

and developing a well thought out agenda will help make the Men’s Ministry meetings run smoothly

and orderly, while still allowing the Holy Spirit to flow freely in our gathering. Specific

recommendations as to meeting format and content will be described later.

4. Good Communications. We all know the value of good communications. We like to know what’s

going on and we feel more attached to a group if we are “up to date on things.” Also, while we don’t

always admit it, men appreciate getting a flyer, a note or a phone call reminding us of a meeting or

other important event. Part of the success of any Men’s Ministry is attributed to regular

communications to the men of the church and many other men in their neighborhood.

KEYS STEPS TO BUILDING YOUR MEN’S MINISTRY

1. Gather interested men

2. Pray and plan with your pastor

3. Select called leader(s)

4. Survey the men

5. Schedule major events

6. Communicate well

When you have done the above very well, trust God to deliver the men.

HOW DOES PEMEM WORK?

ESTABLISHING MEETINGS/ FELLOWSHIP

Men in the church should meet at least monthly to build trusting relationships, through which they can help each

other know Christ and grow in His likeness. A large monthly meeting or worship rally is a good format for

general fellowship, personal testimonies, Bible teachings, business/mission project discussions, and for bringing

new men into the group.

Meetings also provide a good forum to discuss ways to support the spiritual growth of youth in the church, and

talk about ways to raise godly children and grandchildren in this godless society we live in. During meetings, men

can encourage each other to share their faith and discover and use their unique spiritual gifts to serve others.

WHEN TO MEET

Meeting may be one Saturday morning each month for a light breakfast, a devotional and a meeting to discuss

various work projects. Tuesday Nights Once or twice a Month etc.

When we meet how long must the meeting be?

1. Monthly gathering on Tuesday nights may include a dinner and lasts about 2 hours (6:30 to 8:30 PM).

2. Monthly Saturday Morning meetings may also include a breakfast and may also last 2 hours.

3. One hour may be too short and any meeting longer than 2 or 2 ½ hours is too long.

Set Your Dates Ahead

You must ensure that your dates are set well in advance and very well communicated to all the men so they can

adequately prepare for it. This is not to say that a few quick meetings cannot be organized, but these should be

seldom.

Meeting Order

1. Fellowship Time, Blessing (and Dinner)

1. Don’t Keep the Men’s Ministry a Secret!!

2. You do not want to hear “I didn’t know the men had a meeting Tuesday night. Sorry I missed it. Let

me know when you guys are meeting again.”

3. There is no substitute for good, quality communications. It is a Key Success Ingredient for Men’s

Ministry.

4. Have someone handle communication – organizing Sec – with the Flyers/Newsletter/Bulletin Board

and Calling/Membership Team.

WHAT TO AVOID

Avoid the following:

1. A ministry that does not seek God’s direction through prayer.

2. A ministry without clear goals and purpose.

3. A ministry focused only on programs and activities, and not on relationships.

4. A ministry to men in groups that are not men-only, intentional and strategic.

5. A ministry that does not have called, motivated and passionate leadership.

6. A ministry that is not seen as open to all men in the church and community.

7. A ministry that does not strategically identify and reach out to lost men.

8. A ministry that does not determine and address the specific needs of men.

9. A ministry that does not offer a variety of “comfortable” entry points.

10. A ministry that tries to implement too much, too fast.

11. A ministry that is not balanced in outreach, discipleship, ministry & missions.

12. A ministry that does not address the biblical manhood issues of worldly men.

13. A ministry that avoids proven discipling tools to grow men in Christ-likeness.

14. A ministry that is not flexible and open to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

15. A ministry that is not supported by the pastor.

PEMEM LEADER TOOLS

A CALL TO LEADERSHIP

As a PEMEM leader you have been called to fruitful living so much so that you can also hand down

successfully what has been committed to you to other faithful men. “Share the things that you have heard

from me in the presence of many witnesses with faithful men who will be able to teach others also (2 Timothy

2:2 (MEV)). It is our goal that every PEMEM leader can say without a doubt, as Paul said, “Follow me as I

follow Christ” (1 Corinthians 11:1 (MEV)). It is our duty to reproduce ourselves. The men who follow us can

only get to where we have been. We must become leaders making others leaders. Our mantra as leaders

therefore is “I am a Leader making others leaders”. We see this as:

The Leader: A man of character, Charisma, Commitment, Good Communication skills, Competence,

Courage, Discernment, Focus, Generosity, Initiative, Good Listening skills, Passion, Positive Attitude,

Self-Discipline, Vision and Servanthood.

The Making: The deliberate or conscious action to form the qualities mentioned above in others.

Leaders: The results of the making, that others will catch what we have and knowing that the best

way to impact is doing.

Leader + Making Leaders = Leaders for Future Generations.

FUNCTION OF PEMEM

1. To organize seminars, workshop, lectures, and symposia on all aspects of life including the following

a. Marriage Enrichment

b. Husband’s responsibilities at home

c. Childcare and education

d. Business management and techniques

e. Leadership and responsibility in church and the state

f. Current affairs at both national and international levels

g. The teaching of basic principles of domestic law, e.g. the drifting of Wills and agreements for

the purchasing of real and personal properties

h. The history of the Church

2. Carry out evangelism, via preaching, witnessing, and winning souls for the Lord.

3. To train men to be responsible in the Church and in the society at large.

4. To develop men’s talents and self-esteem in order to enhance their social, physical, spiritual, and

intellectual status.

FUNCTIONS OF PEMEM LEADERS

The PEMEM leader at all levels shall:

1. Be responsible for the day-to-day administration of the ministry.

2. Chair all the Men’s Ministry Executive Committee meetings at his level.

3. Submit the Men’s Ministry semi-annual and annual reports to the appropriate authority.

4. Be accountable to their heads, presiding Elder, District Pastor, Regional/ Area Head and the National

Head as the case may be.

5. Supervise both the teaching of the Word of God and lessons in the PEMEM syllabus.
