Planning for Advent

SUNDAY NOVEMBER 29

“5th Sunday” Project Assembly of gifts

We will collect items for 4 weeks

(November 1-22)

PLEASE BRING 1) large bars of soap 2) men's deodorant

3) skin lotion 4) shaving cream

5) men's razors & blades 6) toothpaste (NO TOOTH-

BRUSHES, please) 7) men's socks

Christmas is coming, and that means we are gathering children, parents, grandparents, dogs and

other pets together for a Christmas Pageant on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 13TH. We are planning a pageant that lets parents bring children just one time (Dec. 6th) before the day of the presentation itself. Here's our schedule: Nov. 29th, Sunday at 11AM (OPTIONAL): children, parents, and grandparents draw

Nativity scenes for the slide show on Dec 13th. Those who have time can try on costumes. Dec 6th, Sunday at 12 pm: participants will practice the Pageant song. During coffee hour, kids and adults can pick out remaining costumes. Dec. 13, Sunday at 10AM: final dress rehearsal in Harlow Hall. Service at 11AM starts with Pageant. Join us this year in a creative celebration of Christ's birth!

If you have any ideas or questions, contact Glenn at [email protected]

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 29 The “Hanging of the Greens”

ushers in the Season of Advent as we explore the

meanings behind the different symbols Christians used during the Advent & Christmas season. Why do we hang

garlands and wreaths? Why do we decorate our sanctuary with trees and hang pretty gold and white

ornaments on it? Advent entreats us into the anticipation of the birth of the Christ-child as we prepare

our hearts, our homes and our sanctuary.

Congregation Approves 2016 Budget and Leadership

in Annual Meeting

In its Annual Congregational Meeting on Sunday, October 25, the Congregation approved the proposed budget for 2016, totaling $364,079 (down from this year’s budget of $371,363.) A narrative budget explaining the different ministries supported by the Congregation’s contributions and other sources of income, is available on our website at the following link: http://media1.razorplanet.com/share/511271-5658/resources/943367_2016NarrativeBudgetbrochure.pdf A full list of the newly elected Leadership can be found on pages 4 & 5.

To help our elected leadership, we have scheduled two important dates for

training:

ELDERS: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 1, immediately after worship, the CURRENT,

CONTINUING, and NEWLY ELECTED Elders will meet in the Weir Lounge for

training. This is an opportunity for us to take about the significant role that the

Elder has in the life of the congregation, as well as to do the housekeeping task

of sign-ups for serving in worship each week.

DIACONATE: SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, also after worship, the CURRENT,

CONTINUING, AND NEWLY ELECTED Deacons will meet in the COMMUNITY

ROOM. We will look at the various tasks our Deacons undertake in their

supportive role to the Elders and the Minister of the Congregation. We will

also review the process of serving in worship as those who collect the offering

as well as preparing and serving communion.

2016 Elected Leadership (cont.)

Six members of North Chevy Chase Christian Church attended the Salt & Light conference on October 17th at National City Christian Church to gain new insights into church leadership. They were inspired and challenged in workshops led by Pastor Cheryl, Regional Minister Allen Harris, and Rick Morse (Vice President of Hope Partner-ship), among other leaders from our regional churches.

In his keynote address, Rev. Rick Morse talked to church leaders about adapting Disciples Congregations for the future and for ministry planning. Our Board has spent this past year studying Rick’s book, From Our Doorsteps: De-veloping a Ministry Plan that Makes Sense.
