Friends- Thanks for allowing Kevin, Amelia and me to be a part of your community this summer. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed our time together and will always have fond memories of you all as our daughter’s “first church!” As my time with you comes to an end this month, I’ll think of it not as goodbye but see you later. I hope to see many of you around at area Disciples events in the future including the Regional Assembly coming up October 14-15th. I’ll be presenting two workshops during the meeting
called: "Grief Ministry: Care that Helps without Hurting.” I hope that if you are attending this meeting, you’ll stop by and join in the conversation. Copies of my newly released memoir, Birthed: Finding Grace through Infertility will be available for sale at the meeting as well— before you can even buy them online! You are a wonderful, loving and committed church family. I look forward to hearing what God does through you as you continue to follow where the Spirit leads! Many blessings, thanks and much love, Pastor Elizabeth
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2—Rev. Tatham returns to Worship and to the life of NC4. She will be Worship Leader as Rev. Hagan preaches and concludes her Sabbatical Interim ministry. We will share together a litany of transition as part of our worship, and
we offer our thanksgiving for Rev. Hagan’s ministry with us!
WELCOME BACK TO OUR PASTOR, REV. TATHAM

“Live Simply” - 2017 Stewardship Theme
In this day and age I suspect that all of us yearn for a way to live more simply the
more complex life becomes. This October as we continue to discern where God is
calling us into this next year, we will explore what it means when we “live simply”
in our stewardship of God’s gifts.
In Paul’s instructions to Timothy, he said: As for those who in the present age are
rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of
riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.
They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share,
thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future,
so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.
North Chevy Chase Christian Church has a “rich” history of touching lives through
the many ministries we are involved in, both from within our walls and without. Let’s
move into 2017 to “do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to
share” to be agents of healing and wholeness in our fragmented world.
Dear North Chevy Chase Family -
I write this as the last days of this wonderful Sabbatical gift you have given me are drawing to a close. The experiences over the past three months have varied from “the sublime” to the
“ridiculous!” And each one has been an opportunity of learning and exploring and reflecting.
Returning to you with much on my mind and much to discuss with you, I look forward to jump-ing back into our life together at NC4. And I cannot adequately express my gratitude to Eliz-abeth for being present to you as pastor, teacher, and comforter in these last three months. I know that she has tenderly cared for you as well as offered you inspiring and challenging sermons. And I appreciate her comfort to those who have been ill and in grief in these months
of my absence. I hope you have taken the time to share with YOUR appreciation for her time at NC4.
As I return, we will begin to address our giving for 2017, to the mission and ministry we’ve committed ourselves
to. We will continue to plan ways to fellowship together, and to reach out to our neighbors together.
I hope you have all had a safe and enjoyable summer and are now back into the routines that are important to you and your family— and I hope that ONE of those routines will include participation in the life of NC4—it’s not just a “habit” (although it’s a good one to nurture!) it is a joy and a blessing to be able to be together in
worship, in fellowship, in serving God’s people!
Blessings on you this this day!

we target our upstairs area to
clean and update to make sure
we’re ready for more frequent use of those upstairs
rooms. Recently, both in June and in September, we
have hosted youth and children with their sponsors on
the upper level. We need to evaluate that area and
make plans for its use into the new year.

NC4 provides overnight housing for the Matsiko World
Orphan Choir
Recently, NC4 provided four nights of lodging and hospitality to 8 adult
chaperones and twenty-one Liberian, Peruvian and Indian children who sing
and dance as member of the touring Matsiko World Orphan Choir. Due to a
last minute cancellation they were desperate for housing and contacted
NC4. The group slept on the carpeted floors of our second story classrooms
using their own sleeping bags and air mattresses. Grateful for our modest
accommodations, and the use of our kitchen for breakfast and dinner they
were able to fulfill most of their needs by showering at the Bethesda YMCA.
NC4 Outreach catered Popeyes fried chicken for their Wednesday night
dinner which was delivered by Dorothy and Eddie Drennen. They also re-
ceived a generous cash gift from Gerald Eggert. All that was lacking was a
washer and dryer. Their tour left the Washington DC area September 19th.
Matsiko is a Ugandan word for “hope” which embodies both the children
and the songs that they sing. Proceeds generated by the choir tour and merchandise sales go directly to support
The International Children’s Network’s (ICN). worldwide programs, including life-changing educational sponsorship
that affords orphaned children a chance at a university degree. For futher organization information, audio inter-
views and pictures of each child, a performance video, what it means to sponsor a child or to make a donation go
on the web; http://www.matsikochoir.com
Give Food Give Thanks Food Drive
NC4 will begin preparing for Thanksgiving in October with a food drive to stock up the food pantry
of Pilgrimage Christian Church just in time for holidays. The Give Food Give Thanks food drive will
begin on Sunday, October 16, and end on Sunday, October 30. Everyone is invited to bring canned
or boxed food items on any—or all—of the three Sundays. There will be food baskets in the Narthex
and Glassway on the first two Sundays—October 16 and 23; the food baskets will be in the Sanctu-
ary on October 30 to collect final donations during the worship service. This will be our last Fifth Sun-
day service project of 2016.
Pilgrimage Christian Church is an African-American-based church led by Rev. Brenda Cardwell in the
Suitland—Silver Hill, MD, community. The food pantry provides nourishing grocery items to individuals
and families, and as the holidays draw near, the need for food to restock the shelves increases. Our
goal is to help make certain that the food pantry is full as Thanksgiving approaches.
Any canned or package food items are welcome, but there is a strong preference for low-sodium or
no-salt items. Help fill the shelves of the food pantry by bringing your contributions between October
15 and October 30. And, thanks in advance for you generous sharing.

Rev. Elizabeth Hagan Shares Her Wisdom with the NC4 Council
on How to Move Forward
At the September 13th NC4 Church Council meeting Elizabeth Hagan asked, “What is the mission of the church and why do we exist?” Do we exist because of the Gospel – the charge from Jesus to share the good news with everyone by offering acceptance and be-longing? Or, are we bogged down and blinded by old institutional habits that obstruct
and slow us down on our path of Missional Transformation?
To help us reflect on our current state and to inspire us to continue moving forward, Eliza-
beth shared these quotes of theological wisdom:
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because
what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Howard Thurman
“The Place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep
hunger meet.” Frederick Buechner, Wishful Thinking: A Theological ABC
“The church needs to shed its attachment to any method of an organization that drains en-ergy rather than amplifies it.” Rev. Derek Penwell, DOC pastor and author of the Mainlin-
er’s Survival Guide to the Post-Denominational World
On ministry, “Churches have fewer people but the same number of bureaucratic spots to fill; and the inability to fill them causes not only feelings of anxiety (“We have to have committees staffed because…”) but also feelings of inadequacy (“Surely all the other churches have fully staffed committees”)…In the congregation, if nobody wants to do it,
don’t do it.” Rev. Derek Penwell
“There are no perfect systems. The only system you need is the system that helps you get
ministry done.” Rev. Derek Penwell
As the Council reflected on these words and the meeting ended, she told us to keep mov-ing forward and left us with the powerful encouragement that comes from HOPE. “Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing,
the dawn will come. You wait and watch and work: you don’t give up.” Anne Lamott
For more discussion on this topic, join Elizabeth each Sunday in September at 9:45 AM in
