Electricity Experiments

On Feb.19th Miss Hood’s 4th grade science classes did an activity with light bulbs, wire, and just a battery! We had to figure out how to make the light bulb light up. What we did was called a complete circuit. First we got the battery, and then we picked up the wire and attached it to the flat end of the battery. After that, we wrapped the other end of the wire around the end of the light bulb. Then we touched the light bulb end with the wire to the end of the battery with the hump. This makes the light bulb light up! This experiment taught us how to create a complete circuit with electricity. We also got an inflated balloon and rubbed it on the carpet. You have to rub it over and over. Next we went to an area on the wallboard and the balloon stuck! This experiment taught us how to make static electricity. –Abigayle Crites

PTA News Plans for the parking lot are still in the works. . World’s Finest chocolate bunnies sales are due by March 5th.

Bus Safety with Buster

On February 23, Ashland Police Officer Scott Menefee came and taught the CRS primary kids about bus safety. The program started at 9:30 in the CRS gym. They brought out ‘Buster’ the bus. Kids asked questions about Buster and about busses. Officer Menefee went away, while Nancy the officer’s helper, told kids things about bus safety and then Buster asked questions. I think the kids learned a lot from both, busses and bus safety. Buster will be back next year! -Morgan Scherer

Healthy Heart Challenge

On February 18, people from King’s Daughters’ Medical Center put together a thing called the Healthy Heart Challenge and came to our school. Each class had a scheduled time during the day to attend. First the people began by telling us to hold out our hand and pump it to show how hard your heart works if you smoke. Next they divided us up into four groups. In center 1 we had to get on a scooter and go in obstacles then grab a rope and pull ourselves back to the beginning. At center 2 we had to get cones and swing the ball into them. In center 3 we had to balance on a rope. And in center 4 we had to stack cups as fast as we could. They did this to encourage us to stay healthy. I hope they can all come back next year. –Cassandra Holbrook

Dental Hygiene

On February 26, 2010, Mrs. Bonner’s class had a visitor who talked about taking care of their teeth. They learned to brush their teeth two times a day and to floss one time a day. She showed them tiny pictures of food like cake, grapes, cupcakes, and vegetables. She used yarn to pretend that it was floss. Then the students put their hands in a prayer position as if that was their teeth. The Dental Hygiene teacher showed them a poster that said “Plaque + Sugar=Cavity.” She had some fake teeth and showed them how to correctly brush their teeth with a big toothbrush. Did you know there are germs that grow on your tongue? Well, now you know. At the end she asked, “Any questions?” Then she gave them treat bags with toothpaste, floss, tattoos, and a toothbrush. Then they all watched a movie called “Wiggly Teeth.” Makenzie Lucas

St. Patrick’s Project

On March 3, Mrs. Bonner’s class had Mrs. Janice Ledford come and teach the kids about St. Patrick’s Day. The kids made shamrocks shaped like dogs. They also talked about how Mrs. Obama turned the fountain in front of the White House green. They ate cupcakes shaped like shamrocks with Pringles and juice. I got some, too, and it was delicious. Thank you, Mrs. Janice Ledford, for coming. Hope you come back soon. –Cassandra Holbrook
