Kentucky Derby Day

On Derby Day we all wore hats. We had different Derby activities. The inside games were in the morning. In these games we measured how many hands tall we were like you measure a horse and we learned about the rose blanket they put on the horse that wins the Derby. Then we all made a silk, which is a jockey’s uniform. Later in the afternoon we went to play games outside. One of the games was to race a stick horse around the trees. Another game was tricycle races. Also there was a corn bucket race where each team had to fill a box with corn feed using a small bucket and shovel. It was a great day! –Abigayle Crites

Money

The first grade learned about money. They got Hilma Harned from National Citizens Bank to come and help. She passed out sheets of paper with a jar on it to each of the students. Then they drew coins in the jar. Next Ms. Harned started passing around different coins to the kids. After that she gave everyone an apple bank and a penny to put in it. What they learned was how to identify each coin and how much it is worth. Now they know about money–

Math-a-thon

Thank you to all of you who made this year’s St. Jude Math-a-thon a success. We were able to send a total of $1,040 to help those children who are fighting cancer. We had 19 students to complete their books and the following students raised enough money to receive a t-shirt and other prizes. Those students were: Layla Brown, Harlea Blevins, Shannon Phipps, Mikayla Martin, Kaiden Wells, Kaleb Kohut, Cameron Marushi, Cody Blevins, Zachary Stafford, Lindsey Brown, Christine Clarke, Miranda Martin and Drew Kiser. We plan to have next year’s Mathathon in January. We hope to have many more participate next year. –Mrs. McDavid

PTA News At the April PTA meeting, members decided to change over to PTO effective July 1, 2010, once all needed transitions are completed. Election of new officers will be at the next meeting on May 3rd at 6 PM in the Library. Bunny Sales profits go towards playground improvements. Teacher Appreciation Week is May 3-7. A committee headed by Pat Greene, has planned a week of activities with the theme “Summertime Fun,” including lunch each day and massages.

Trash War

On April 22nd or some people know it as Earth Day, Mrs. Schirtzinger’s kindergarten class participated in a “trash war.” The boys and girls competed to see how much trash they could clean up on the school’s playground. Whoever got the most trash won. It ended up being a tie. Everyone was happy and had so much fun! -Paige Kennedy

Kindergarten Recycling Project

In April, the kindergarten classes did a recycling project. The students made objects out of common household items that you would usually throw away. The kindergarteners did this so our earth wouldn’t be so polluted and dirty, and we could have fun items to use. Some of the things they made were birdhouses and feeders, trash picker-upper, and cereal box post cards. They were very creative and useful. –Amy Moore

Travel the USA From October to May, the entire 4th grade has done a ThinkQuest program at Charles Russell. 4th grade has been doing a project called Travel the USA. They did it where they could learn about one of the 50 United States. They did it by picking a card without looking at the state written on it. The card also had some information on it. We got three colors of construction paper that had five headings. They were Introduction, State Facts, Famous Natives, Important Places, and Fun Facts. The Introduction had the State Name, capital, and the population. The state facts page had the statehood, the state bird, state flower, and the nickname. The famous natives were people who were born from that state. The important places have places that are very popular. The fun facts are interesting facts about the state. We all enjoyed doing this project. –Mackenzie

Huntington Museum Visits 1st Grade

On April 14th, at 8:30 in the morning the Huntington Museum of Art came to CRS to have fun with the 1st graders. This was held in the gym. Ms. Jill Asbury and Ms. Sunny Hammer from the Education Department came and did school projects with the whole 1st grade. Smartly, they did this by using their hands, heads, and creativity. First they drew whatever they wanted. Then they put stickers on a piece of foam using symmetry or symmetrical lines. I don’t even think the kids ever knew they were having fun with math most of the time! -Morgan Scherer
