The most simple Gregorian chants that the faithful are invited to learn to sing
according to the intention of Vatican Council II’s Constitution
on the Sacred Liturgy
THE CHANTS OF TRADITION
BOOKS
Introduction to the booklet Iubilate Deorequested by Paul VI and published in 1974by the Sacred Congregation for Divine Worship
The Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, in the Constitu-tion on the Sacred Liturgy, having urged that appropriatespace be given to national languages in liturgical celebra-tions, adds this recommendation: “Nevertheless steps shouldbe taken so that the faithful may also be able to say or to singtogether in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Masswhich pertain to them” 1.
Guided by this thought and this intention, the SupremePontiff Paul VI several times in recent years2 has expressedthe wish that Gregorian chant should accompany the Eu-charistic celebrations of the People of God with its pleasingharmony, giving them strength and vigor, and that the voicesof the faithful should intone both Gregorian chants andthose in the national language.
This booklet responds to the desires of the Supreme Pon-tiff. In it are gathered some of the simpler melodies, that thefaithful should sing together, especially on the occasion ofthe Holy Year.
THE CHANTS OF TRADITIONThe most simple Gregorian chants
In this way, Gregorian chant will remain the bond thatwill make of many people a single nation, gathered in thename of Christ with one heart, one thought, one voice. Infact, the impulse to unity, expressed by the consonance ofthe voices in the variety of languages, rhythms and har-monies, makes admirably clear the varied harmony of oneonly Church: “It’s really a great bond of unity – Ambrose said– the song of the whole multitude of people in a single cho-rus! There are several strings to the harp, but only one sym-phony. The fingers of the artist often err, in a few strings; butthe Spirit artist in the people can not err”3.
May God grant that common prayer achieve a happy out-come and that the heart of the Church that prays may res-onate with joy and more on high, throughout the earth, withthese gentle and devout harmonies.

2Visus, tactus, gustus in te fallitur,
sed auditu solo tuto creditur. Credo quidquid dixit Dei Filius:
nil hoc Verbo veritatis verius.
3In cruce latebat sola Deitas,
at hic latet simul et humanitas.Ambo tamen credens atque confitens;
peto quod petivit latro paenitens.
4Plagas, sicut Thomas, non intueor, Deum tamen meum te confiteor. Fac me tibi semper magis credere,
in te spem habere, te diligere.
5O memoriale mortis Domini,
panis vivus vitam praestans homini, praesta meae menti de te vivere,
et te illi semper dulce sapere.
6Pie pellicane, Iesu Domine,
me immundum munda tuo sanguine, cuius una stilla salvum facere
totum mundum quit ab omni scelere.
7Iesu, quem velatum nunc aspicio,
oro fiat illud quod tam sitio: ut te revelata cernens facie,
visu sim beatus tuae gloriae. Amen.

observata lege plene cibis in legalibus, cibum turbae duodenae se dat suis manibus.

ad firmandum cor sincerum sola fides sufficit.
