District PSSA Athletics Carnival—Track and Field

The Dunoon PSSA Field Athletics Carnival will be held tomorrow at Dunoon Public School followed by the track

carnival events on Friday at Riverview Park. The whole school will be attending both Athletics Carnivals.

Any students travelling by bus will need to hand in $12.00 with their permission note. Please indicate on the permission note if your child/ren will be transported by private car. All students will need to be at school by 9.00am on

both days if catching the bus.

Thursday’s carnival commences at 9:30am and Friday starts with the march at 9:45am.

There will be a canteen available on the day at both these events, or children can bring morning tea, lunch and drinks. The students attending will need to be in full school uniform, wear covered footwear and a school hat. We encourage

the kids to apply sunscreen before the carnival for added protection.

Parents who are driving and wish to take their child/children home early please let a teacher know prior to leaving. The supervising teachers on Thursday will be Mr Manser, Mr Barry Cooper and Miss Sansom. On Friday the students

will be supervised by Miss Sansom and Mr Manser.

A program for both of these days is attached to this newsletter.

School Counsellor

We have been allocated a new school counsellor for the remainder of 2018. I would like to welcome Mrs Leanne Hore who is based out of Casino Public School. Although Leanne is our 7th school counsellor since 2015, we respect and accept that there is a shortage of counsellors across the schooling sector including across the North Coast. Leanne will be working in our school once a fortnight on a Wednesday commencing next week, Wednesday 15th August. I have attached a counsellor referral form to this newsletter and I ask that any parents that would like their child to access the school counselling service to complete the form and return it to school, even if they have already completed this form before. If you have any further questions of if you would like to contact Leanne, please let me

know.

School Pick-up & Drop-off

I had a visit from the WHS officer early in the term to discuss the school’s implementation of Welfare, Health and Safety policies. One item raised was the pick up and drop off points for parents of a morning and afternoon. There have been some accidence and tragedies around schools and school zones over the past few years involving cars

and pedestrians.

I would like to remind all families that the school drop off and pick up areas are along Standing Street either side of the bus zones. Students are required to enter through the school gate at the top of the bus zone steps. The school staff

car park and driveway is not a safe place to drop off or pick up students.

For those parents that park near the tennis court fence opposite the fire shed, could I ask that if you are going to continue to do this, could you please escort your child onto the school grounds safely of a morning and come into the

school of an afternoon and pick up your child from under the COLA.

Please support us by making school drop offs and pick ups safe.

Statement of Accounts

It is important that school accounts are paid by due dates in order for us to pay service providers. The school and P&C do their best to support each family by subsidising excursions and programs. Overdue accounts also roll over into new calendar years. If you do owe money for programs in 2017 and 2018 please pay the account at your earliest convenience. We have the Paypop function on the home page of our school website or payment can be made through

the front office at the school.

Please find attached statement of accounts for fees outstanding and owing for the Major Excursion. Could you please

finalise these accounts at your earliest convenience. Thankyou

Sporting in Schools & Community Partnerships

The Sporting in Schools and Community Partnerships program for term 3 will commence on Friday, 17 August 2018. The Australian Sports Commission funds this program so there is no cost to students. This term the students will be doing Hockey and Touch Football, however the students will also participate in literacy, numeracy and STEM based activities with peers from Modanville, Corndale and Tuntable Creek Public Schools. The program will be held at Modanville Public School over four Friday’s from 11am onwards. The program dates are Friday 17 th (week 4),

Friday 24th (week 5), Friday, 7th Sept. (Week 7) and Friday, 14th (Week 8).

Travel will be by bus. Please fill in the permission note attached to this newsletter and return to school by next

Tuesday, 14th August, 2018.

Major Excursion Lake Ainsworth Sport and Recreation Centre

The 2018 Major Excursion is only 7 weeks away and we are becoming increasingly concerned that some students

may not be attending, either because notes have not be returned, or because no money has bee paid.

Excursion Information and payment schedules have been included in our school newsletters since early term one to

allow families the pay for the excursion in smaller and manageable instalments.

The Lake Ainsworth Sports and Recreation Centre have been in contact with us and are in desperate need for us to

provide final attendance numbers.

The excursion will run from Wednesday 26 September until Friday 28 September 2018. The cost is $225.00 per student and $400.00 per family. As per previous years, the school and The Channon P&C will subsidise this

excursion. The excursion must be paid off by Friday, 31st August 2018.

If your child/ren will not be attending this excursion please contact Mr Manser ASAP.

Byron Bay Writers

Festival

We really enjoyed meeting

authors Oliver Phommavanh,

Jessica Roberts and Andrew

Hansen at the Byron Bay

Writers Festival last week.

K/1/2 with Miss Mim In Geography this term the junior class will be studying seasons, climates and rainforest ecosystems. In art we are continue to work though our 'mobile' projects, our rainbow jelly fish continue to light up our room, while our natural found objects mobiles are a work in

progress, check them hanging from our veranda!

3/4/5/6 with Miss Mim This term the senior class is working though some extreme surviv-al. We are staring in the polar region studying the environment and how people live in survive. moving though the great sandy desserts of Australia and then on the the peaks of the Atacama desert in Chile. Later in the term the Children are going to marry our studies of society and environment with their mathematical understanding of design to design a house or shelter for a chosen extreme environment. Our social skills study across both classes this term is Reliance, children are exploring what resilience looks like sounds like and

feels like in different environments.

Arithmetic with Dave

This semester, Dave is doing intensive individualised teaching with some Year 3–6 students, to develop their core arithmetic knowledge. This is his area of expertise, on which he has written books and run workshops for other

teachers.

“It is a delight to get to be a regular arithmetic teacher myself, with my own dear students. I am working in the sunny new library on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. In the first two weeks of term, I have assessed each student, and got stuck straight into lessons. I have found the points where each student loses clarity or understanding in their number work, and I pose them short tasks around those points, challenging them to clarify their thinking and to develop smarter strategies. The students have been thinking hard, and making progress already. Next week, I will send a letter home with each of the students involved, to inform parents and carers, and explain the brief follow-up

work I will want the students to start doing at home” (Dave)

River Rock Show—Rena

Last week nearly 100 students performed in River Rock Musical. Eleven of these students were from The Channon Public School and they represented our school with style and courage. Lillyana, Jasper, Hunter, Milaya, Aidden,

Ollie, Jeremy, Audrey, Bodhi, Milly and T.J brilliantly performed 6 shows over 3 days.

They executed their circus skills with great flair and caused some concern in the rehearsals because the cast and teachers didn't realise the skill level of the circus troupe. The kids learnt how a professional stage show is produced and run, the experience was exceptionally valuable as it gave the students more tools to over come challenges and supported skills in communicate, sharing, responsibility and trust. We also

had a mountain of fun.

After School Care

I am pleased to announce that we have received funding through a one off grant to support the After School Care program. This funding will go towards purchasing equipment, upgrading technology in the old schoolhouse building and constructing a new and safer car park space where the demountable was.

Unfortunately this positive announcement comes with the news that the Thursday afternoon session has been dropped meaning that the program will only run on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. I hope that more interest will come from within the school and wider community.
