Love INC is planning to partner closely
with the Salvation Army to offer two pro-
grams for Christmas this year. The first is
the normal Adopt-A-Family style program
which provides gifts and toys to Huntington
County families. The second is a discount
toy store for families who instead wish to
have the opportunity to provide for them-
selves.
Many families struggle throughout the
year to make ends meet, let alone generate
enough income to provide their children
with Christmas gifts. For many years Love
INC, churches, individuals, businesses and
various agencies in Huntington County
have worked to help families at Christmas-
time and as a result hundreds of children
have been able to have a great Christmas at
no cost to the parents. Love INC has re-
ceived many thank you notes explaining
how much this effort meant to their family.
Love INC and the Salvation Army partic-
ipate in Adopt-A-Family by pairing com-
munity members, churches, businesses or
individuals with families in need to provide
them with Christmas gifts and a Christmas
meal. Groups or individuals help out by do-
nating new and gently used clean toys, giv-
ing food items, health and beauty products,
providing funds or volunteering time. Vol-
unteers help sort toys, make gift selections
and wrap the gift items.
For other families, though, receiving free
gifts is difficult. Perhaps the family has
never had to ask for help before or maybe
they wish that they could afford to provide
presents for their children. With this in
mind, Love decided to make the new addi-
tion to the Christmas program.
Along with the traditional Adopt-A-
Family program, the new discount toy store
plan would begin for families and comes
from a belief by Love and the Salvation
Army in the power of exchange, and the
dignity that it gives families who want to af-
ford their own Christmas. The idea behind
the discount toy store would be to sell do-
nated toys at a minimal cost from a store-
front in downtown Huntington from
October to December each year. According
to Love INC, the ideal situation and their
“dream” would be to use a donated store-
front each year during this time frame.
Joey Spiegel, executive director of Love
INC, said “There are not many opportuni-
ties in Huntington for people to have a hand
in their own Christmas. The goal is to pro-
vide joy for children and dignity for the par-
ents.”
Kyle Miller, ministry coordinator for
Love INC, agrees with Spiegel, “Most peo-
ple want to contribute to their children’s
Christmas; we want to give them that
chance.”
Spiegel went on to explain, “This is a
sensitive subject for people that can’t pro-
vide. We want to see parents have that op-
tion. Families can have Christmas for free
or purchase at a really low cost.”
“We are really trying to listen to our
clients, we find clients want to do some-
thing to give back – whether its money, time
or work. We want to allow parents the op-
portunity to provide for their children. This
program will give empowerment and dig-
nity to the parents. Handouts sometimes rob
people of human value and dignity,” said
Miller.

istry coordinator of Love INC. Both agree that they are listening to what their clients are
saying and what the clients are telling them is that they would like the opportunity to “give
back - whether its money, time or work.”
