Mr. Beau Quattrone
Principal
OPV Catholic Schools
Dear Friends in Christ:
In today’s Gospel from Luke, he speaks of being
humble. This parable of the Pharisee and the Tax
Collector in the Temple is rich with spiritual truth.
Jesus spoke often of the issue of righteousness,
pleading for us to understand our inability to be
righteous enough to attain the kingdom of heaven.
This knowledge is essential if we are to
understand His mission on earth, which was to
save sinners—those who knew they could not
save themselves. If we are truly broken-hearted
over our sins, we can be assured of God’s bound-
less love and forgiveness in Christ.
The school year is going by fast at both St.
Joseph and St. John the Baptist schools. The
end of the first quarter is upon us, the students at
both schools will have their Halloween parties this
week and Friday is All Saints Day. St. Joseph has
a tradition of having the Kindergarten and 8th
grade Mass buddies work together as they learn
about the Saints. They create t-shirts for the
Kindergarten students to wear on All Saints Day.
After Mass, the students present information and
sing songs about their chosen Saint, while
wearing their special shirts. The students begin
preparing for this special day a month
before All Saints Day. In the afternoon, parent
volunteers provide special school-wide activities
for all of the students. Students rotate through
"stations" designed to teach them about the
Saints while having fun playing games such as
"Saints Bingo." A tradition that continues at St.
John the Baptist is that during All Saints Day
Mass, students in Kindergarten to 8
th
grade are
able to dress as their favorite Saint and process
down the aisle to their seats. All students have a
brief description of their Saint if asked what Saint
they are representing. The 6
th
, 7
th
, and 8
th
grade
students work on their Saints projects in
Language Arts, Religion, and Social Studies
classes.
If you have time and would like to visit either of
our schools, please do so. All the students and
faculty at St. John the Baptist and St. Joseph
school thank you for your prayers and support, we
could not do this alone. With God’s help and
direction, our classrooms this year are filled with
students learning what it means to be saintly:
humble and thankful to God. I am very proud to
be the Principal of St. John the Baptist and St.
Joseph School and look forward to a great rest of
the school year.
God Bless,
Beau Quattrone, Principal

READING I SIR 35:12-14, 16-18
The LORD is a God of justice, who knows no favorites.
Though not unduly partial toward the weak, yet he hears the cry of the
oppressed. The Lord is not deaf to the wail of the orphan, nor to the
widow when she pours out her complaint.
The one who serves God willingly is heard; his petition reaches the
heavens. The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds; it does not rest till it
reaches its goal, nor will it withdraw till the Most High responds, judges
justly and affirms the right, and the Lord will not delay.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 34:2-3, 17-18, 19, 23
R. (7a) The Lord hears the cry of the poor. I will bless the LORD at all
times; his praise shall be ever in my mouth. Let my soul glory in the
LORD; the lowly will hear me and be glad.
R. The Lord hears the cry of the poor.
The LORD confronts the evildoers, to destroy remembrance of them
from the earth. When the just cry out, the Lord hears them, and from all
their distress he rescues them.
R. The Lord hears the cry of the poor.
The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; and those who are crushed in
spirit he saves. The LORD redeems the lives of his servants; no one
incurs guilt who takes refuge in him.
R. The Lord hears the cry of the poor.
READING 2 2 TM 4:6-8—16:18
Beloved: I am already being poured out like a libation, and the time of
my departure is at hand. I have competed well; I have finished the race;
I have kept the faith. From now on the crown of righteousness awaits
me, which the Lord, the just judge, will award to me on that day, and not
only to me, but to all who have longed for his appearance. At my first
defense no one appeared on my behalf, but everyone deserted me.
May it not be held against them! But the Lord stood by me and gave me
strength, so that through me the proclamation might be completed
and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was rescued from the lion's
mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil threat and will bring me
safe to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory forever and ever. Amen.
R. Alleluia, alleluia. 2 COR 5:19
God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, and entrusting to us
the message of salvation.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL LK 18:9-14
Jesus addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own
righteousness and despised everyone else. "Two people went up to the
temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax
collector. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to
himself, 'O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity --
greedy, dishonest, adulterous -- or even like this tax collector. I fast twice
a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income. 'But the tax collector stood
off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat
his breast and prayed, 'O God, be merciful to me a sinner.' I tell you, the
latter went home justified, not the former; for whoever exalts himself will
be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted."
SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

FUNERAL PRAYER VIGIL MINISTRY
The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teachings of Jesus and give
us a model for how we should treat all others. One of the 7 works of
Mercy is the directive to BURY THE DEAD. The OPV parishes have taken
this mandate to heart for many years in the various manifestations of care
for the deceased and their family and friends. Funerals give us the
opportunity to grieve and show others support and comfort during difficult
times. Through our prayers and actions during these times we show our
respect for life, which is always a gift from God, and comfort to those who
mourn. Two information times will be offered to explain the Ministry of
Funeral Prayer Vigil, an outreach of love, compassion and evangelization.
Anyone interested in praying at a funeral home during the time of loss of a
fellow parishioner’s loved one is welcomed. Come and learn how God can
use you to bring His love to others. Information will be shared on Wed.,
October 30 at 1:00 pm in the St. Elizabeth Room at St. John the Baptist. A
second information time is scheduled for Monday, November 4 at 1:00 pm

We meet each Tuesday after Morning Prayer following the 9:00 A.M. Mass at OLOJ

FEATURE OF THE WEEK: Galileo, Science & Faith
This booklet explains the facts of the
Galileo case and traces the subsequent
development of the myth that the Catholic
Church has always been the enemy of
science. This history proves that even in
the Galileo case the Church remained true
to its belief that faith and reason belong

PAINTING
The church sign is due
for renovations.
It will be taken down soon
and returned to it’s
rightful place as soon as the
painting is completed.
Giant Eagle/Community/Labriolas
Thanks to all those who continue to purchase the
grocery gift cards. This is a simple but very effective way to
help our school. To those of you who have never tried this
program, won’t you consider beginning to help. Many of our
parishioners have scaled back their
budgets due to the economy, however, the need to
purchase gas, prescription drugs and food never ends.
Please consider purchasing Giant Eagle, Community and
Labriolas gift cards. These cards are
sold every week after all Masses
and during the week at the Parish
Office. Our school receives 5% back
on Giant Eagle and Community and
10% back on Labriolas at no
additional cost to you.

FUNERAL CROSS
As we continue the journey to becoming
one parish often some of our individual
traditions change as new ones are evolv-
ing. For many years at 0LOJ there
was the tradition of receiving a cross dur-
ing the funeral liturgy.
As of October 5, 2019 this tradition will be
discontinued as we begin creating new
ways to celebrate the lives of those who
died.
