From Fr. Costa Dear Friends, For a number of months, my primary physician has been monitoring my rising PSA num-ber. In April of this year he scheduled an appointment with a urologist who ordered a biopsy that revealed cancer in two sections of my very enlarged prostate. Both the urologist and a surgeon have strongly recommended that I have my prostate removed. To that end, I will be undergoing surgery on Tuesday, September 22, at Saint Elizabeth’s Hospital in Brighton, MA. Following sur-gery, pathology will be done to determine any further course of treatment. In preparation for my hospitalization and surgery, I will be having Covid-19 testing this Fri-day, September 18, and will need to quarantine until the 22nd. The initial weeks of my recupera-tion will be spent at the home of good friends. We are blessed to have Fr. Ken, Fr. Gabriel, and Fr. Quigley as part of our team. They are making sure daily and weekend Masses, as well as funeral Masses, will be covered in my ab-sence. Fr. Fitzpatrick has also offered assistance. I am most grateful for this generous support and assistance. Deacon Bob, Sr. Kathee, Wendy, and our wonderful parish staff will see that the daily business of the Somerset & Swansea Catholic Community continues without interruption. Hopefully, I will be “good as gold” in a matter of weeks. Thank you for your support and concern. Please remember me in your prayers as I remem-ber you! _____________________________________________________________________________
Faith Formation 2020-2021
We are currently developing plans for our 2020-2021 Faith Formation program for children/youth in Grades 1 through 9. With all of the upheaval caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, we want our families to first get their chil-dren settled in the school year before worrying about Faith Formation. In the meantime, we encourage you to join us for Sunday Mass in person or by social media via our websites or our Facebook page. See the first page of this bulletin for contact information. Information will be e-mailed to our families in the very near future. New registrations will begin soon. Your pa-tient understanding is very much appreciated. __________________________________________________________________________________________
A Reminder
Even though our three church buildings are not all used for weekend Masses, they are being used for baptisms and funerals, and, as is the case for St. Louis de France Church, for the taping of our weekly Sunday Mass on our web-sites and Facebook. Please spread the word: WE ARE NOT CLOSING ANY OF OUR CHURCH BUILDINGS! When we are given the “green light” we will gladly re-open our worship sites. Until then, we will follow the pro-tocols given by the Diocese of Fall River, and encourage you, if you feel comfortable, to share Mass, in-person, at Saint Thomas More Church. Thanks much for your support and cooperation!
Autumn Flower Drive
With the approach of Autumn, we would like to beautify our parish properties, especially around the shrines to the Blessed Mother. To that end, we invite you to make donations in memory of loved ones. These names will be published in the parish bulletins and will be remembered in our daily Masses during the month of October, the month of the Holy Rosary. We would like to purchase both large and small pots of colorful Fall mums. If at all possible, a donation of $20 or more would allow us to make this possible. Of course, any donation amount will be gratefully received. To make your donation, please use a separate envelope marked “Flowers.” With your donation (you can make out checks to whichever of our three parishes) please include the names of loved ones to be remem-bered and at what church you would like your flowers placed. Donations can be dropped in the collection boxes at weekend Mass or sent to the parish office. We are most grateful for your generosity and assistance.
_____________________________________________________________________________ Veteran’s Day Project
Our nation honors all who have served in our armed forces on November 11, Veteran’s Day. The Catholic Com-munity of Somerset and Swansea proudly boasts of a number of parishioners and family members who have served, and are currently serving, in the military. At Mass on the weekend before Veteran’s Day, we would like to recognize, honor and thank these parishioners (and family members) for their service There are three categories under which we invite you to submit names: (1) Veterans, those who have served for any number of years in any branch of the Armed Services; (2) those currently on Active/Reserve Duty; (3) De-ceased Veterans, especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
You may list those you wish to recognize on a piece of paper (please print clearly!) and either drop your list in the collection boxes or send them to the parish office by post or by e-mail. There is no limit on the number of names you can submit. Names of our veterans will be published/posted for the Veteran’s Day holiday.
__________________________________________________________________________________________ Scripture Insights
Earlier in Saint Matthew’s gospel, when Jesus taught the Our Father, he emphasized forgiveness, saying: “If you do not forgive others, neither will your heavenly Father forgive your transgressions.” These are pretty strong words, which imply that our own forgiveness is dependent on our willingness to forgive others. Today’s parable of the unmerciful servant illustrates precisely this fact. Clearly this is an analogy in which the master represents God, and the servants represent people like us, who are supposed to treat each other the way God treats us – with forgiveness. Today’s first reading puts it well: “Could anyone nourish anger against another and expect healing from the Lord?” God has forgiven us so much, and God is willing to keep on forgiving us – but if we will not forgive others, we are throwing God’s gift of forgiveness back in God’s face. The refusal to for-give is itself a sin that needs forgiveness. When we refuse to forgive, we cut ourselves off from God’s for-giveness. When we are hurt by someone, we may need a little time to take stock of our feelings, but ultimately it is most helpful to take a position of humility, a position that refuses to judge, refuses to adopt a self-righteous attitude, and refuses to hold a grudge. A grudge is like toxic waste; it only hurts the one who holds it. So how many times should we forgive the person who wrongs us? When Jesus says “seventy-seven times,” he really means stop counting. Forgive as many times as it takes!

ST. LOUIS DE FRANCE WINNERS’ CLUB
We have completed another successful Winners Club with the grand prize drawing taking place this past Tuesday. Because we were not allowed to host a closing banquet due to Covid-19 restrictions, we added a number of prizes so more members could have the chance to win. And win they did! The list of grand prize winners is printed be-low. In coming weeks, when all the accounting is complete, we will publish a financial report for the Club. I wish to take this opportunity to first thank all those who participated in this Winners Club. Your commitment to and support of Saint Louis de France Parish is very much appreciated. The Winners Club would not be successful if it were not for the dedicated work of our “Captains,” those men and women who solicit memberships, collect dues, and keep members “in the loop.” Many thanks to: Claire Almeida, Janet Barbelle, Claire Barrar, Pete Boulay, Ann Chauvin, Diane Costa, Terry Doup, Alice Garvin, Jeannette Kenyon, Judy LaChance, Laurie LaRoche, Lisa Moreira, Christine Phenix, Claudette Racine There is a highly dedicated team who work very quietly, without fanfare, coordinating this entire effort. I am most grateful to: Laurie LaRoche, Darlene Richards, Pete Boulay. Once again, your hard work has certainly paid off. Many, many thanks for all you do for our parish. May God bless your generosity! Congratulations to our Grand Prize Drawing winners and their Captains:
