so that, by deepening our sense of reverence, you may nurture in us what is good

Migrant and Refugee Sunday – 28 August 2016

T his year marks the 102nd anniversary of the World Day of Migrants and

Refugees.

“Although we are far removed from the refugee crisis, we are challenged to open our hearts to the sufferings of others. Compassion is the hallmark of

Christianity. In keeping with the Jubilee Year of Mercy, the Holy Father has chosen as its theme: ‘Migrants and Refugees challenge us: The Response of the Gospel of Mercy’. With the men and women of goodwill, let us build a better Australia and a better world. May our endeavour to replace the culture of fear and indifference with that of encounter and acceptance be brought to fulfilment in accordance with God’s vision of the fullness of life for all humanity.” Excerpt from Statement of Bishop Vincent Long OFM Conv, Bishops’ Delegate for Migrants and Refugees

Drawing on the theme of the current Jubilee Year of Mercy for his message for Migrant and Refugee Sunday, Pope Francis draws our attention to the treatment of refugees globally and in our local communities, challenging us by asking whether our response towards migrants and refugees is grounded in mercy. That is, the mercy which God has shown us first. Pope Francis says, “Today, more than in the past, the Gospel of mercy troubles our consciences, prevents us from taking the suffering of others for granted, and points out a way of responding which, grounded in the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity, find practical expression in works of spiritual and corporal mercy.” (taken from Migrant and Refugee Resource Kit from Australian Catholic Migrant and Refugee Office)

Vocation of Family (Part 3 Vocation Awareness Month—Reflection on the Vocation of

Marriage and Family) Families today seem to come in more shapes and sizes than ever and we live in an age where family life is changing rapidly.

When we reflect on our own family situation it may be comforting to remember that: • All families have strengths and weaknesses. • Every ‘healthy family’ is a ‘hurting family’ at some time; this is part of the human condition. • Families are at various stages of growth, it is not a static

way of being. • Each family has a unique gift born out of their own experience. Pope Francis encourages and affirms parents in their role as family builders and reassures us that the vocation of family life is possible with all its ups and downs and is a holy and rewarding one.

“I thank God that many families, which are far from considering themselves perfect, live in love, fulfil their calling and keep moving forward, even if they fall many times along the way. The Synod’s reflections show us that there is no stereotype of the ideal family, but rather a challenging mosaic made up of many different realities, with all their joys, hopes and problems.” (Amoris Laetitia 57)

August 28th. 2016 Dear Fellow Parishioners, This weekend a large number of children received the sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Peter Comensoli and each of them chose the name of a saint to be their patron and model into the future. Some of the choices were surprising and touching and I detected at least one St. Monica but not many takers for St. Augustine. Perhaps he casts too long a shadow for their little lives to appreciate since they have not yet had to struggle through the changing times and seasons that he went through which so uncannily echo our own? As we celebrate the Feast days of Augustine and Monica this weekend it gives us the opportunity to draw comfort and encouragement from their example and from the many

words of wisdom that have come from his writings down through the ages. He lived through the beginnings of the fall of the Roman Empire when he was still a newly ordained bishop and it set him thinking about the meaning of history, the reality of time, and the calling of Jesus’ followers to live with hope amid the tottering empires that come and go. What can we learn from Augustine’s understanding of history in the light of the collapsing social structures of his times and our own? Augustine teaches us that Christians are those who live in time but who belong to eternity. He also teaches us that we must not equate any political entity – whether it is the Roman Empire, the American Republic, the United Nations, the current regime in Turkey, or anything else – with the kingdom of God. That realm is our true homeland while we hold double citizenship in a world of profound discontinuity and frequently contested loyalty. There is a refrain from an old Gospel hymn that tells us “this world is not my home; I’m just a-passin’

through” but at the same time we are meant to carry out what Augustine calls “our business within this

common mortal life”, which is to seek justice and peace by working with all our might to love and honour

God dwelling in everyone who is our neighbour. And so we live in this world

not self-indulgently nor triumphantly, as though our future were in our own

hands, but humbly, compassionately, committedly, and yes, ambiguously, as

those who belong ultimately to another City, with foundations built on God.

Each week we read an extract from Pope Francis' letter and reflect on how it might relate to our family lives.

"In the family, 'three words need to be used. I want to repeat this! Three words: ‘Please’, ‘Thank you’, ‘Sorry’. Three essential words!'” (Amoris Laetitia 100)

Simple words but not so simple to put into practice. This week raise awareness of the importance of these words in your family relationships and compliment family members when they do use the words.

Reflections on The Joy of Love (Amoris Laetitia)

Our parish centre plays host to wide variety of events both within and external to the parish community. As I’m sure many of you are aware St Kieran’s Church has had a long

association with Toastmasters and below is the latest event they will be hosting in the parish centre. The St Kieran's Toastmasters club is hosting the Area 8 speaking contest at the St Kieran's parish hall at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 14th September. All

are welcome to come along and hear the best speakers from the clubs around Manly Vale. If you or your friends are interested in improving your own public speaking skills, Toastmasters is a great way to increase your personal growth and confidence. We are also currently organising a Friday morning class - Strength, Tone and Balance Training for over 60’s to be held the parish centre hopefully beginning in October.

There will be an RCIA Enquiry Night for those interested in becoming Catholics or simply finding out more about the Catholic Religion after the 6pm Mass on Sunday Sept 11. Anyone interested, please contact the parish office and leave your details and an RCIA member will contact you. We will meet outside the main doors of the Church after Mass
