The latest Census figures show that more than 116,000 Australians are homeless – something unacceptable for a rich and well-resourced nation like ours. Yet these people are only the tip of the iceberg: welfare agencies report growing numbers of families and individuals struggling to meet the cost of mortgages or rents and turning to specialist housing services which are often unable to meet demand. For those living on pensions or allowances, finding secure housing can be a far greater challenge – one that often takes a terrible toll on social wellbeing and mental health. On this Social Justice Sunday we are invited to allow the Spirit (which came down upon the 70 followers of Jesus and of Moses) to inspire us as a people so that we may respond with unstinting generosity in sharing the needs that all human beings deserve - of freedom, self-determination, SHELTER, and protection from oppression of every kind. Moses had asked God if he would allow the Spirit that had guided him through his leadership to be shared with 70 others – similar to the same number of disciples sent out by Jesus to announce the Good News of the Kingdom. Under the influence of the Spirit, the elders were united as a group, gifted with the Spirit, and endowed with prophesy. But 2 others who were not in the camp were also chosen to receive this gift, (just like the man who was casting out devils in Jesus name who was the object of the disciple’s complaint). Jesus does not sense any of them to be in competition or an adversary, rather he sees that evil is being confronted, and sickness and death are being defeated and rejoices that such great help is given his ministry. Part of that ministry includes the offering of a glass of water in his name, a bed at night, or more importantly a place to call home. As Catholics, we are sharers in the same Spirit that overshadowed Moses and Jesus and their followers who are called to work with all levels of society in uncovering and addressing the personal, familial, structural and governmental factors that allow homelessness to be such a scourge. Like Moses our hope is that God may bestow the Spirit on all the people! The second reading from the Letter of James contains this forthright message:- “Whatever wealth, luxury and pleasure you may have accrued, it is too often paid for by the poor whenever they are cheated, hungry and denied justice”. The Spirit’s choice is to stand with the poor because that is where God stands, so the faithful should identify with this as well. Jesus instructs us to cut off or sever whatever contributes to creating unfair conditions of destitution and homelessness so that, by removing them, we may continue through life without this sin hampering our progress until we all reach the place we can call home. 26th Sunday Ordinary Time (YR B) 30 September 2018

IN THE CARE OF THE AUGUSTINIANS

The Catholic Community of North Harbour

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

The Australian Catholic Bishops’ Social Justice

Statement for 2018–19 is titled ‘A Place to Call Home: Making a home for

everyone in our land’.

The latest Census figures show that more than 116,000

Australians are homeless – something unacceptable for a rich and well-resourced nation like ours.

Under the influence of the Spirit, the elders were

united as a group, gifted with the Spirit, and endowed with prophesy.

Readings this Sunday Numbers 11:25-29 James 5:1-6 Mark:9:38-43. 45. 47-48 Responsorial Psalm ‘The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart ‘ Readings next Sunday Genesis 2:18-24 Hebrews 2:9-11 Mark 10:2-12

NEW CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD (CLOW) CO-ORDINATOR NEEDED FOR NORTH HARBOUR PARISH

I have really enjoyed co-ordinating and being involved with children’s liturgy for many years now. I remember starting children’s liturgy when my first daughter, Sarah was in Kindergarten at St Kieran’s school and Sarah is now 23 years old so we’re looking at over 18 years. I can’t even remember when I took on the role as co-ordinator but it probably was a couple of years after starting as a volunteer. I can truly say that Children’s Liturgy together with being a Catechist is the most satisfying and rewarding ministries that I have been a part of. However, I feel that it is time for me to step down as co-ordinator and a volunteer of children’s liturgy and for someone else to take on this very satisfying and rewarding role.

I am looking for someone to take on this role beginning in Term 4 of this year, Monday, 15 October. You may even wish to share this role with a friend or two.

So you may ask what’s involved in being co-ordinator of children’s liturgy? Here are some points:

At the beginning of the year a roster for St Cecilia’s and St Kieran’s is put together.

Each week on Mondays or Tuesdays resources (readings, prayers of the faithful and activity sheets) are put together and delivered to the persons who are rostered on for that week. Most of the resources are already photocopied and filed in folders and it’s only the occasional week that you need to photocopy from scratch.

You liaise with the volunteers of both St Cecilia’s and St Kieran’s churches. If you think this is something you can take on or would simply like more information about what is involved in being a co-ordinator, please feel free to call me anytime and I would be more than happy to have a chat and meet up with you. Catholic Scripture Teacher short term Help needed:

We need your help for one of the following schools only until the end of Term 4? Training and support will be available.

Manly Vale Public School - Year 4 class on Wednesdays from 9:00am to 9:30am

Allambie Heights Public School – Kindergarten class on Wednesdays from 11:40am to 12:10pm

Allambie Heights Public School - Year 4 class on Wednesdays from 12:20pm to 12:50pm

Allambie Heights Public School - Year 6 class on Wednesdays from 12:20pm to 12:50pm

Brookvale Public School – Kindergarten class on Fridays from 11.30am to 12pm

Teaching catholic scripture at any of these schools would suit anyone who have been a scripture teacher in the past or anyone who is confident to step straight into a classroom situation and teach catholic scripture. You do not need to be teacher trained. The Diocese provide us with a curriculum that is taught at the schools. Please note that I am also always looking for scripture teacher helpers to go into the classroom with a teacher and assist.

If you think you are able to spare some time and get involved in this very special and rewarding ministry or would simply like more information please contact me any time.
