Bread is the ‘staff of life’; that which sustains us. Along with water, it is the most basic of staples: simple, nourishing, satisfying. But Jesus is offering more than ordinary bread. He is offering that which will sustain, not only in this life, but will lead to eternal life.

Question of the Week ‘I am the living bread that came down from heaven.' John 6:51

At school: Do I understand that it is the Risen Jesus who comes to me in Holy Communion?

At work or study: What is the difference between bread and the Living Bread?

In my family life Have we ever talked about who Jesus is for each of us in the family?

Discipleship this week!

Light a candle at tea, and hold the loaf of bread and give thanks.

Charitable Works Fund Thank you to everybody who has donated to the Charitable Works Fund this year. When we started our final appeal for this financial year a couple of weeks ago we were $38,000 short of our quota, since then we have received a further $10,700 in donations. As you can see we still have a bit to do to reach our quota. If you wish to make a donation to the Charitable Works Fund it can be made anytime via the envelopes available in the church or the parish office. Please put your donation envelope on the

collection plate or hand it in to the parish office. Donations are 100% tax deductable and any donations made prior to June 26 will be claimable for the current financial year.

Planned Giving Envelopes Next financial year’s Planned Giving envelopes are now available for collection at both churches. If your envelopes are not in the church please call the parish office and tell us which church you would like to collect your envelopes from. We thank all those who make a financial contribution to our parish. If you would like to join the Planned Giving program please contact the parish office.

This week as we celebrate the last of our First Communion Masses in the

parish we pause to reflect on the place of the Eucharist in our lives on this, the

Feast of Corpus Christi, the Body and Blood of Our Lord.

There is perhaps a no more defining element of our Catholic faith than the

moment we gather around the altar to recall the Lord’s saving words and gift to

us of his very self.

While the day may be marked by some nostalgic thoughts of our own past

experiences in the faith as well as its disappointments in the subsequent years, it is hard not to bring to mind

our wishes and prayers that our children will continue to find encouragement and nurture in the faith community we represent.

But is must be more than that.

As Pope Francis reminds us in a recent talk: “The Eucharist is not just a weekly way of celebrating our faith, but should radically

affect our relationship with others, especially with those most in need. How do we experience the Eucharist? Does it just make

us feel good about ourselves or is it something more than that? Does the Eucharist lead us towards the poor, the sick, the

marginalized, recognizing the face of God in them, the Pope asked?”

These are challenging questions.

As the families of the first communicants present hampers for Vinnies’ to use in their outreach to the disadvantaged in our

community, and as we promote our own grassroots GIFT program for struggling families in our midst, we get some idea of the

deeper significance and mystery of the Lord’s self-offering and invitation to us to do the same.

Again we congratulate the children, and thank all those who have assisted in the parish sacramental program over the past twelve

months.

From Fr. Brian

From St. Augustine:

Put to flight my foolishness, Lord, that I may know You. Show me the road I must travel that I may see

You. Thus aided, I hope I shall do all You have commanded me.
