Vincent DiTaranto, Professor of Biomedical Engineering, was invited to present his findings on Problem Based Learning (PBL) Education at the HI-TEC High Impact Technology Exchange Conference in Denver, Colorado, from July 23 - 26.

Professor DiTaranto’s presentation was part of a collaborative conference session called “STEM Problem Based Learning (PBL) in the Classroom: High School and College Implementation Models” coordinated by the New England Board of Higher Education, Boston, MA. Professor DiTaranto shared his and his students’ experiences involving his unique PBL classroom model and the ability to solve specific STEM Challenges. Findings from instructor and students’ implementation surveys indicated that the Challenges increased students’ interest in STEM disciplines as well as teamwork. Team collaborations in the Challenges were found to be a positive step toward college students seeing themselves as role models. HI-TEC is a national conference on advanced technological education where secondary and postsecondary educators, counselors, industry professionals, trade organizations, and technicians can update their knowledge and skills. Charged with Educating America’s Technical Workforce, the event focuses on the preparation needed by the existing and future workforce for companies in the high-tech sectors that drive our nation’s economy.

Professor DiTaranto was profiled in STEM PBL News, a publication of the New England Board of Higher Education and was selected to receive a 2012 National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) Excellence Award, both for his work in problem-based learning over the last 25 years, and his involvement in the STEM PBL project.
