Threadless is an online community of artists and an e-commerce website founded in Chicago by Jake Nickell and Jacob

DeHart. They started the company with $1,000 of their own money. Threadless posts about 1,000 designs submissions per

week. These designs are put to a public vote and assigned ratings based on feedback. The top scoring designs are printed on

clothes and sold online through its website, www.threadless.com. Threadless also has a store located at 3011 Broadway St in

Chicago Illinois and the outlet sells the latest two weeks of top winning designs. The whole catalog of Threadless merchandise

is available at the company’s headquarters located at 1260 W. Madison in Chicago IL. (I would love the Calumet Chapter of

the IMA to be able to visit the company headquarters and hear from someone at the company in 2012-2013 so if you have a

contact there, please let the board know.) This edition of the Calumet Accountant features artwork showcased by Threadless.

Threadless has also partnered with Gap and with Thermos to sell some of the clothing merchandise and artwork. Threadless

compensates the artists with corporate gift cards, and retains the rights on the designs for clothing. The artist keeps the

rights on all other forms of design mediums.

In 2006 Wired magazine dubbed this method of doing business as crowdsourcing. According to Merriam Webster, crowd-

sourcing is the combination of crowd and outsourcing and means “the practice of obtaining needed services, ideas, or con-

tent by soliciting contributions from a large group of people especially from an online community rather than from traditional

employees or suppliers.”

As we come into the home stretch of the 2011-2012 chapter year, I am pleased by many of the accomplishments we have

achieved these past few years. We are doing a great job of raising the awareness of the Calumet Chapter of the IMA to new

individuals, accounting and finance professionals, and college students. Please continue to get the word out about our Chap-

ter and help us grow even more. I am encouraged to find out that some of our group are working on obtaining the CMA certi-

fication. I am proud that we continue to offer excellent technical speakers and quality technical meetings. Finally, I am grati-

fied to have you as a member. It is because of you that our Chapter continues on its path of success. With the aide of the

surveys this year we know that we need to find some locations that better serve the needs of the group. Please let us know if

you have any suggestions. You can email me, use the online survey form, or even the online contact form at our website. We

have increased our online presence with our website http://www.imacalumet.com and continue efforts to keep our Linkedin

group relevant.

We may not yet be at the point of crowdsourcing, and Chaptersourcing may not make it into the dictionary, but we need your

help. We ask you to consider joining the Calumet Chapter board. Current needs are listed in the newsletter and on the chap-

ter website. The period of service is from June 1 through May 31 but you can join us anytime. Board meetings will be held on

Thursdays in the summer and are usually held before each regular meeting at 5:15 p.m. Any member is welcome to stop by a

board meeting. Even if you can not commit to serving on the board you can help us out by recommending speakers, topics,

and locations that have an appropriate meeting room for our group. To show that we are listening I remind you that this

month’s meeting which traditionally has been “Our Biggest Night of the Year” has been moved to the Charley Horse of Mun-

ster by popular demand. I hope to see you there and please send your suggestions to me at [email protected] or speak

with any board member. We would be happy to listen to your ideas.

Chris Miller Bio

After receiving his Master of Arts in Communication from

Northern Illinois University in 1999 Chris Miller immediately

moved into his passion: teaching. His teaching career initially

began at Kishwaukee College in 1999, but he has been an As-

sistant Professor of Speech Communication College of Dupage

since 2002. Professor Miller first became interested in speech

communication when he was an undergraduate student at

Solano Community College in Suisun City, CA when his speech

instructor asked him to join their speech and debate team.

After that he was hooked. After a successful speech career in

California (Gold Medal in Duo Interpretation and Silver Medal

in Program of Oral Interpretation at the two-year national

competition), Professor Miller was recruited by Northern Illi-

nois University and moved himself and his girlfriend (now

wife, they have been dating since 1992) to Illinois where he

continued to compete on the NIU speech and debate team.

He claims his greatest achievements are his State Informative

Speaking award in 1997 only to be bested by the 3rd place

overall at the four-year national championships in After Dinner

Speaking. When his competitive career ended he realized he

wanted to extensively explore communication from an aca-

demic angle. In graduate school Professor Miller studied In-

terpersonal Communication with an emphasis in Health Com-

munication. Professor Miller's focus was on the Emergency

Medical Technician-Patient relationship and published the first

work ever on this dyadic relationship. After graduate school

Professor Miller knew his passion was teaching and conse-

quently wanted to make his career at the two-year level. He

wanted to go back and give to this population of students as

his teachers did for him. Professor Miller has provided work-

shops for IMA in the past, but has also been a guest lecturer

for Painter's District #30, and developed a workshop entitled,

"Speak it Write" with Professor Jason Snart, also of College of

Dupage. Additionally, Professor Miller hosts a bi-weekly on-

line comedy show entitled "That Beepin' Show that is pro-

duced also through College of Dupage.

The CMA designation is a worthwhile pur-suit with many benefits, and you are more likely to succeed in staying on task when you are doing it for YOU. I have written many times in these monthly arti-cles about the value of becoming certi-fied; perhaps this has encouraged some of you to pursue the CMA, and perhaps you have also found your own personal reasons and motivation. Dr. Gleim and my manager encouraged me to take the exam for a position I wanted, but I had to find my own per-sonal motivation to be able to put aside more leisurely activities and stay focused. For me, it came down to two things. The first was a desire to learn more about accounting and what it takes to prepare for the CMA Exam. I wanted to put into action all the study tips and instruction I have shared with candidates over the years. The second was a sense of per-sonal achievement that comes from pass-ing the CMA exam. While this can some-times be the most underrated benefit of passing the exam, it was a huge motiva-tor for me. Perhaps your accounting professor told you of the benefits to your career and that is what got you thinking about the exam initially, but it was your immediate desire to be more highly valued in the job race than your peers that actually moti-vated you to take the CMA. Maybe you are a seasoned professional and, while

your fellow IMA chapter members may have encouraged you to pursue the certi-fication, your motivation to pass the exam stems from having your eyes on that big promotion at work. It is great to have influences on your goals, but your own personal motivating factors are what will help you stay focused throughout your exam preparations. When stress from your personal or pro-fessional life gets in the way, it can be easy to slip into habits that are not pro-ductive. That's when you have to remind yourself why you started preparing for the exam in the first place so you make positive and productive choices in your study habits. I definitely had to do this when studying for Part 1. Now that I have moved on to Part 2, I find that I have to remind myself at least once a week of my reasons for taking this exam, especially during the holiday season. Small adjustments to your schedule will feel less like a chore and more like an opportunity to succeed when you have your own personal motivation. Find your motivation for passing the CMA exam and DO IT FOR YOURSELF!

Making Meetings Matter

By Accountemps, a Robert Half Company

Most professionals have a love-loathe relationship with meetings.

They know these gatherings are a fact of business and can lead to

positive outcomes. But when they receive a meeting invitation,

they often cringe. Why? Because they know for every productive

meeting they attend, there’s another that will be a waste of time.

In a recent Robert Half survey, 27 percent of managers said their

biggest complaint about business meetings is being asked to at-

tend an unnecessary gathering. And nearly one-third of respon-

dents said a session that is not kept on schedule — either starting

or ending late — is their top pet peeve.

Being able to determine when a get-together is truly essential is a

critical skill for managers. And when a meeting is deemed neces-

sary, whether it will be held in-person, online or via a conference

call, steps must be taken to ensure everyone’s time is well spent.

Here are some tips to help you earn a reputation as a thoughtful

meeting organizer:

Reassess the ‘regular’ schedule

There are several standing meetings or conference calls on the

office calendar, but does your team really need to convene so of-

ten? If you’re having a difficult time creating a meaningful agenda

for these sessions, or sense most attendees would prefer to be else-

where, you may need to dial back the frequency. Consider whether

memos, emails or briefing reports could sufficiently communicate the

information that would be covered.

Give attendees a chance to prepare

As business demands escalate, colleagues have less time to convene

during the workday. Help ensure meeting efficiency by sending out

memos in advance so everyone knows the purpose for getting together

and topics to be discussed. At minimum, attendees should receive short

but detailed agendas to review and comment on prior to the session.

Pre-meeting distribution of visual tools that will be used during the

meeting, such as a PowerPoint deck, also is becoming common practice.

This allows attendees to familiarize themselves with the information

prior to the meeting and make a note of anything they’d like to ask

about or comment on. If participants have done their homework, the

presenter also will be able to move through the deck more quickly dur-

ing the meeting, leaving more time for discussion.

Invite only those who need to be there

Does every person on the list of attendees really need to be present for

the discussion? Often, people are invited to meetings as a courtesy

instead of out of necessity. If someone doesn’t have a stake in the ma-

jority of items on the agenda, let that person know his or her atten-

dance is optional. A lengthy participant list also may indicate you’re

trying to accomplish too much in a single meeting.

Request that devices be turned off

By all means, ask attendees to turn off all electronics, including mobile

phones, laptops or tablet computers, during the session unless they are

being used as a planned part of the agenda. These devices can be a

powerful distraction for those who feel compelled to check messages

constantly — or to play games and update their Facebook status.

Some people do like to use electronic devices to take notes during

meetings, however, so allow some latitude. If you at least make it clear

to attendees that their full attention would be appreciated, they’ll likely

honor your request — and stick to business if they choose to keep gadg-

ets handy.

Being asked to attend an excessive number of meetings, especially

those that don’t provide value, can be frustrating for busy professionals

who may be need to push off higher priority tasks in order to be pre-

sent. Judicious scheduling will convey to your staff that if a meeting is

on the calendar, it’s for a good reason.

The Institute of Managerial Accountants (IMA) represents more than 60,000 accountants and financial professionals worldwide. The majority of these professionals work inside businesses and organiza-tions. They comprise the essential elements of financial management, organizational development, integrity, ethics and governance, and short and long term business goal management.

The Certified Management Accountant Credential (CMA) offered by the IMA is an advanced profes-sional certification that reflects the necessary accounting and financial management skills demanded in today’s business environment.

The CMA exam was first offered in 1972. Today over 30,000 accountants and financial professionals have earned this highly recognized and global title.

Professionals who have earned the CMA hold key management roles at top multinational firms and offer their companies the real world relevance, critical knowledge, and leadership abilities to compete in today’s dynamic global business environment.
