Principal’s Message

Dear Bullpup families,

Happy Halloween! We have just recently completed the 1st quarter, and it was nice to celebrate your student’s accomplishments in the awards assemblies on Friday.

If you missed out on the awards, in the next few days, we have several good opportunities for you to spend time with your child at school. We have a home basketball game on Thursday, November 3rd and an away game at Lodge on Tuesday, November 1st.

Literacy night is quickly approaching on Monday, the 7th of November. We will have fun activities for families and you can connect with teachers as well.

A BIG congratulations to the GLA speech team. They had two city finalists, Kaitlyn McClellan and Tyesha Harris, 1st place winner in poetry! We are really proud of our kids and appreciate the hard work of Ms. Chinn and Mrs. Ennis, a community partner who helps the speech team.

Even though it has been pretty warm this week, fall is bringing cooler weather and your student needs to start bringing a jacket to school to be prepared for recess. If you need assistance with winter clothing, please contact Mrs. Austin to get on the list for the EVSC Hangers program.

We have a short time before the first semester is over, so be sure to check in with your child’s teacher to see how they are performing academically in the classroom. This is a good time to intervene if your child is not performing to your expectation or the teachers. We want each Bullpup to reach his/her potential.

It has been a great year so far with our Bullpups and we look forward to a great winter!

Thanks,Tamara R. SkinnerPrincipal

Red Ribbon Week

Your students have been working hard on being accountable throughout October! Our Bullpups were turning in assignments on time, taking responsibility for their actions,

and striving to improve each and every day! Thanks for helping encourage accountability at home! It really makes a difference in student behavior at school! In November we will focus on character. You can promote character at home by

showing your child how to be helpful to others and by doing the right thing, even when it’s not easy to do. Your support is the most important factor in increasing positive

behaviors at school!

October 24th - 28th was Red Ribbon Week, a time when schools across America intentionally promote a healthy lifestyle by saying “No!” to drugs. GLA celebrated

with Spirit Days and by learning about the benefits of a drug free life. It is never too early to talk with your child about staying healthy by avoiding drugs! Make time to begin an open and honest conversation with your children about the negative effects drugs have on your body and overall health! For more information and tips on how to talk with your child about a healthy, drug free lifestyle, contact

Bullpups in Action

Written by Abigail S., 5th graderHave you ever been to Indiana Caverns? I have been to Indiana Caverns. It was September 30, 2016. The whole 5th grade went on the field trip. I was wondering where the money came from. Then my teacher said, “A lady gave us money to go on 9 more field trips plus the one we are going on today!” When we got there, we broke into 3 groups. Ms. Hartz and Mrs. Jines’ group went downstairs to watch a video. The tour guide took us down even more stairs into the cave. There were 265 stairs. I thought I was going to die! We learned about how caves are formed and about the different formations and animals inside the cave. Then we went on a boat ride. The water was only 3 or 4 feet deep. After lunch, we went hiking. That was fun! We saw a baby frog and the other group found a baby lizard. I can’t wait for our next trip!

Fifth Grade Goes to Indiana Caverns

Note: This series of fifth grade science field trips is funded by the “By George, It’s Science” program, which was founded by Jennifer Roll in honor and memory of her father George Hudock, who was an associate biology professor at Indiana University. “By George It’s Science” is designed to instill a love of nature and life sciences in local students. GLA and Bosse were specifically chosen to participate in this collaborative and student-centered partnership.

Written by T’Orah F. and Inetta E., 3rd graders

On Friday, October 14th, the 3rd grade teachers and students went to Wesselman’s Woods. We went so we could learn more about trees. We went on hikes and learned about how trees grow. We had a lot of fun on the hike and when we ate lunch and played at the park!

Third Grade Takes to the Trees

Glenwood’s exceptional staff works hard to provide students with opportunities outside of the classroom to engage students in applying what they learn at school. The articles below are written by students who were chosen to write

about their experiences and share what they have learned with you. We hope you enjoy the work of GLA’s first class of The Bullpup Bulletin’s Student Journalists!

Written by Javonta B., 1st graderWe got to ride on a hayride to get a pumpkin. Next, we got to play with a duck and play on a hamster wheel. Then, we went in a corn maze and played on a tractor. Last, we played on the bouncy pillow. We had fun at the pumpkin patch.

On October 4th, 2016, the special needs students went to the West Side Nut Club Fall Festival for Special Kids Day. Special Kids Day is a day at the Fall Festival just for students in self contained classes in Evansville. When they went, a couple of students won some live fish and some other cool prizes. Then, when they got back to school, Mrs. Chapman’s class bought a fish talk and the entire class learned how to build an aquarium. Now everybody has their own class pet. Andrew, one of Mrs. Chapman’s 6th grade students, said his favorite ride was the bumper cars. He was also very afraid of the Ferris wheel. Jaden, a 3rd grade student in Mrs. Chapman’s class, loved the Ferris wheel, and he also won a fish. Do you know what is awesome? This day happens every year!

Strong & FreeA Red Ribbon Week Poem

Written by Tyesha H., 8th grader

I am strong and free.Drugs do not belong to me.

You are not alone in this fightYou got your friends, your family,

And one life to live. So do yourself a favor and forget about drugs

And when you see a loved oneGive them a hug

Let them know your loveIs worth more than drugs.
