SPEAKER REPORT

This week’s guest speaker and Rotary club of Christchurch

South member John Woodward gave us an insight into his

adventures along the Portuguese Camino which is a

pilgrimage that starts in Lisbon all the way to Santiago. John

was thankful that he didn’t have to complete the full route

which can take over a month, instead of complete around

140 km of the journey travelling at about 20kms per day.

Along the way, John would experience amazing sleepy

villages and massive vineyards with a huge variety of grapes

to make all different types of wine and beverages. John

himself admitted to partaking of a few of the beverages

through many parts of the day, which tended to make the

walk a little more difficult.

The full length of the route is around 227 kilometers and

starts in Portugal through Lisbon or Porto and ending in Spain through to Santiago de Compostela and is a

leading pilgrimage route since the 9th Century since the 1980s one of Santiago’s oldest city has been one of

UNESCO’s world heritage city. Which just goes to show the significance of the journey that John and His wife Ann

completed.

John was amazed at the route itself which he doesn’t believe is maintained in the way of taxes of the purchasing of

tickets which means It is left to the locals to maintain the route, another feature John admired, the way the route

was highlighted and marked the whole journey. Considering the fact this was a self-navigated journey John had

done very well to only get lost once even with some dodgy measurements in his travel guidebook.

BUNNING SAUSAGE SIZZLE

Saturday 18th August - The Christchurch Youth committee

with the help of Prashna and Sarita Mclean and Barbara

Mckinnon ran a. Barbeque at Bunnings Warehouse Tower

?the youth committee was also able to make a donation to the Christchurch city mission with a bag of left over

sausages and 8 loaves of bread to help those in the community who need it the most.

Charlesworth Reserve Replanting

To complete what has been a very busy time for Rotarians 3 Christchurch south

members alongside some cashmere high students turned up to Charles worth reserve

and planted approximately 140 plants within the reserve.

Sarita Mclean, Malcolm Rickerby and Shirley Harris can be seen in joyous moods as

they planted all of the trees have a look at the images below

CHICKEN MANURE

Our annual fundraiser, chicken manure sales has completed its

first weekend with rather positive results. Most of the mountains

of bags from the showgrounds have disappeared and John

Wylie fielded calls all morning from successful sites such as

Innes road which constantly ran out. With what is left hopefully

one more weekend should be enough to clear the remaining

stock.

Other Notices

Members should be aware that our Rotary District is

proposing undertaking some form of assistance to

those affected by the severe Australian drought.

Our Club Member, Andrew Kim, recently received

an award for undertaking volunteer work at the Old

Stone House gardens for 15 years – well done

Andrew.
