The Western Bulldogs in partnership with Victoria University have developed the Bulldogs Friendly Schools (BFS) program for both secondary and primary schools in the municipalities of Maribyrnong, Brimbank, Hobson’s Bay, Wyndham and Melton – the Bulldogs’ Backyard. The Western Bulldogs and Victoria University both have strong connections to the community in the West and a strong commitment to serving our community. A significant part of the Western Bulldogs Community Club strategy is our commitment to schools in the western region. We recognise the significance of contributing to the school community through promoting and delivering Australian Football to young people in the West. In 2012:

The Bulldogs Friendly Schools (BFS) program was conducted at 60 Primary Schools across the Western Region of Melbourne

The BFS program reached 115 classes

60 Victoria University Pre Service teachers gained invaluable teaching experience in a school setting through the BFS program

Western Bulldogs players conducted over 50 visits to schools involved in BFS, while many schools were lucky enough to receive two visits

Students from 14 BFS supported the Western Bulldogs at a match in 2012 at Etihad Stadium

Students from 8 BFS took part in the annual Multicultural Schools Cup, with Sunshine Harvester Primary winning the boys State Final.

Schools will be offered the opportunity to participate in one of three primary school programs and each school is allocated a Pre-Service Teacher who assists to connect the School, the University and the Western Bulldogs. The partnership between Western Bulldogs and VU is unique and allows for networks to be established and relationships formed between schools, teachers, Pre-Service teachers and community partners - all which raise the aspirations of local school students.

The Bulldogs Friendly Schools program aims to communicate the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle in a respectful and inclusive setting, linking into Health and Physical Education in the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS). The program encourages students to participate in physical activity and develop an understanding of the need of variety and frequency in food intake when leading an active and healthy life. The program will be delivered by Victoria University Pre-Service Teachers throughout a 6 week program. All school students involved will receive a free activity booklet to work through during class and as a take-home reminder of what they have completed during the course. In addition to the program, schools can also benefit from the following:

Western Bulldogs Player Appearances

Bulldogs Backyard Tickets at Etihad Stadium

Chance to go in the draw to win a Woofer Appearance at your school

Western Bulldogs Giveaways

3.2 Multicultural Schools Program (MSP) Schools with a high ‘Culturally and Linguistically Diverse’ (CALD) population with be able to take part in the Multicultural Schools Program (MSP). This program offers the same core concepts of the Bulldogs Friendly Schools Program; however MSP schools receive a variation in the additional bonuses of the program. In addition to the program, schools can also benefit from the following:

o Western Bulldogs Player Appearances o AFL Multicultural Program tickets for Students, Parents and Teachers for a designated Western

Bulldogs match o Western Bulldogs Giveaways o Opportunities for your school to go on a tour of the MCG and the National Sports Museum at a

discounted rate o Schools that participate in the program have the opportunity to showcase their newly acquired skills

at the Multicultural Schools Cup, against other schools in the program. o An opportunity for some schools to participate in a half-time Auskick game at one of the Western

Bulldogs matches. The Multicultural Schools Football Program is a key program of the AFL’s Multicultural Program. Any questions or concerns you have in relation to the program or any extra resources you require should be directed to Natasha Feore, Schools and Club Coordinator of the Western Bulldogs. After indication from your partner school in which general term suits the school to run the program, you will be required to notify Natasha of the exact dates and times you will be running the program. This is to ensure that attendance can be monitored and appropriate support can be provided.

4.1 Key Dates Bulldogs Friendly Schools player visit 1 – Wednesday 5 June 2013 Bulldogs Friendly Schools player visit 2 – Wednesday 24 July 2013 Multicultural School Program Cup (MSP schools only) – dates T.B.C

4.2 Attendance You will be required to notify Victoria University (VU) if you are absent. Please refer to the 2013 Project Partnerships Calendar for the dates you are required at your school. If you are absent for one of the weeks of your Football program, you will be required to notify your contact at the Western Bulldogs.

4.3 Resources for Clinics It is your responsibility to find out what equipment your school has prior to commencing the Football program. You will need to ensure you have the correct amount of resources to deliver your football clinics. This will include, but not limited too; footballs, cones, bibs, and a whistle. As a guide you must have at least one football between two students. Please ensure that they are an appropriate size and are inflated; you should not be using full size footballs for your students. If your partner school does not have enough footballs, cones or any other equipment needed to deliver your program, you will be required to call Natasha Feore and arrange to pick up a bag of Auskick Footballs and some cones. These footballs will come flat; it is your duty to pump them up. The equipment will be your responsibility, and you will be required to drop them off at Whitten Oval upon completion of the program. Should you have any issues with resources please contact the relevant coordinator for your program.

4.4 Communication with the Western Bulldogs Your partner school has indicated to us when they would like the program to be run in their school. We have proposed four different blocks, weeks 6-10 Term 1, weeks 2 -6 Term 2, weeks 2-6 Term 3 and weeks 6-10 term 4. It is your responsibility to work with your contact teacher to set-up times and exact dates for the program. You will be required to notify your contact to confirm your dates and times. This is essential as it ensures that we can attend the sessions to help you out. We understand it is difficult to work around school dates, excursions and other school events; therefore it is your responsibility to notify the Western Bulldogs if dates or times change.

4.0 Pre-Service Teacher Expectations

Page 11: The Bulldogs Friendly Schools initiative is presented in ... Tenant/WesternBulldogs/Communi… · directed to Natasha Feore, Schools and Club Coordinator of the Western Bulldogs

All students are expected to check their university email regularly as this will be the main point of contact for the Bulldogs Friendly Schools Program.

4.5 Uniform It is a requirement that when delivering the Bulldogs Friendly School program you will be wearing your Western Bulldogs / Victoria University polo shirt. You will also be required to wear appropriate footwear and track pants/shorts. You will be a role model to your students, if it is sunny; you cannot enforce ‘no hat, no play’ unless you are leading by example.

4.6 Quarterly Meetings You will be required to attend quarterly meetings throughout the year. Your induction/coaching course will act as the first of these quarterly meetings. The purpose of these meetings is to ensure all students are up to date with their program, share information and ideas for the delivery of the program and to ensure you have any necessary resources for the program. Natalie Vernuccio will communicate the date of each meeting via university email.

4.7 Program Support We want to ensure that you are properly trained and have the right skills to carry out your duties throughout the Bulldogs Friendly School program. There are contacts put in place should you have any issues with the program or need any further assistance. We strongly advise that if you have an issue, or are not confident in delivering one of the football sessions, that you make contact with the Western Bulldogs so that we can provide you with assistance. We are more than happy to come and give you a hand when available.

5.1 Bulldogs Activity Booklet The Western Bulldogs activity booklet is an opportunity for students and teachers to explore content relevant to promoting a healthy and active lifestyle in a fun and interactive manner. The resource introduces kids to their favourite Bulldogs players and gives them an insight into how these players maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. There are plenty of games and activities to keep the kids entertained while linking in with the relevant content to support the program. The activity booklet is divided into four lessons plans that students and teachers can use to support the content learned throughout the program. The lesson plans relate to the following:

Lesson Plan Theme

1 Australian Guide to Healthy Eating

2 The Human body

3 Daily intake of food

4 World food

These lesson plans should accompany the physical activity component of the program to fully highlight the importance of both a healthy and an active lifestyle. Incorporating nutrition into the active game sessions is an effective way of getting the message across to these kids. The physical activity component of the program is centred around five different themes that can be described as the core values of the sport.

5.2 Practical Skill Posters A key component to the Bulldogs Friendly Schools program is to introduce and teach students about some of the key skills involved in Australian Football. The Practical Skill Posters provides you and your students with some key coaching points related to kicking, handballing, bouncing and chest marking. You can use the posters for your own teaching reference, and to hang around the classroom to help students remember the key skills.

5.3 BulldogsChef Competition Outlined in the Bulldogs activity booklet is a new classroom competition – BulldogsChef. This activity allows students to showcase their newly learned nutrition skills and knowledge throughout the program and apply it to creating a healthy menu. Schools can also send their students menu’s into the Western Bulldogs to go into the draw for their class to win a BulldogsChef experience at Whitten Oval. It is the discretion of both the school and the pre-service teacher whether the students conduct individual menu’s or group menu’s, and the winner will be announced when all the Bulldogs Friendly School’s finish their programs. More details on this great opportunity will be announced at a later date.

A key component of the Bulldogs Friendly School’s program is to ensure students that participate in our program have the best possible opportunity to continue their progress in Australian Football. Many of the students that participate in the Bulldogs Friendly Schools program, in particular the Multicultural Schools Program do not currently play Auskick or local football, but many may be interested. If you speak to students that are interested in playing, you can advise them of their local club and who to contact to play. If you are unsure you can contact Natasha Feore (see 1.1 Key Contacts)
