icing is a concern, and forecasts suggest clearing, school may be delayed with a late start time of 10:00 a.m.

Decisions on school closings are made at the district level based on National Weather Service Data, county-wide school weather hotline, and early morning observations by the superintendent and transportation director. Please do not call before 5:30 a.m., as we will be analyzing data, making observations and preparing to make the decision.

School will not be dismissed due to storm conditions that arise during the day as long as it is feasible for students and staff to remain at school safely. The district is extremely reluctant to dismiss school early if the weather is severe.

Mrs.Vance’s class!

Classes earn the title of the “Royal Classroom” by demonstrating skills they have learned in the Lions Quest curriculum and meeting school expectations.

November’s “Royal Classroom” is special due to the original first place winner, Mrs. Bassett’s class, being very GENEROUS and giving their reward to the second place winner, Mrs. Vance’s class. Thank you Mrs. Bassett’s class for being so GENEROUS.

Seal Elementary Student of the Month is fifth grade student, Caleb Deets. Caleb is the son of Darwin and Tracy Deets. His favorite subject in school is science because he enjoys the fun experiments. In Caleb’s spare time, he enjoys participating in Jr. Ranch Rodeo and being outside with his dad. When Caleb grows up he would like to be a cowboy. Congratulations Caleb!

5th Grade DARE Program

On Thursday, December 3, 2015, Seal Elementary 5th graders graduated from the DARE program. Akeam Ashford from Channel 12 news was the guest speaker. After graduates were recognized and speeches were completed, everyone was invited to enjoy cake & punch. Deputy Curtis Cox taught the drug abuse resistance education curriculum during our first semester. Students learned about how to say no to drugs and how to make other wise choices. They discussed peer pressure and the consequences of their actions. High school role models, Ben Basham, Michael Cochran, Klair Gibson and Cashlyn Munroe, visited with the 5th graders about how they have been successful because of their wise choices. Part of the requirements for graduating was to write an essay about what the students learned. This year’s essay winners were Amy Black and Emily Powell. Amy’s essay will go on to represent our school in the state essay contest. Valuable skills are learned from the DARE program that students can use for a lifetime.

Fifth graders have been participating in several STEM science projects this semester. Students have produced a rocket, a looper, a robot, and a roller coaster! Science rocks!!! But, so does technology, engineering, and math. When you put it all together you get STEM! Rockets were built and then launched in October. Students also got to see a large rocket launched by Laurie Winzer and attend a presentation about Newton’s Laws of Motion.

Awesome STEM Projects!

Fifth graders also worked collaboratively in groups to produce a “looper”, which is a type of straw airplane. By changing variables, they were able to increase the distance that their “looper” flew. Great teamwork on solving problems! The next step was to assemble a balsa wood glider in which students again used variables. Their goal was to earn bragging rights for having the longest flight. Along with this project, Becky Mitchell from AIRBUS gave a presentation on gliders & airplanes. She provided balsa wood gliders for each student to take home. Engineers in the making! New teams of students began a project of constructing roller coasters by drawing a sketch of their plan. They were given several parameters to follow such as requiring a loop to be incorporated into their coaster. Once the teams had determined which roller coaster to build, they began putting them together. As they worked, students modified their sketches to fit their final roller coaster design.

Along with all of these projects came learning – new vocabulary terms, new problem solving skills, new teams to consult with collaboratively in order to finish a product, and new opportunities to present to classmates! What an awesome school we have! The best news is that we still have more projects coming! When you see a 5th grader, ask them to tell you about their projects. They love sharing their successes!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWS

Students assembled a robot during our Three Legged Stool project. Through Arts Partners of Wichita, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Shiney treated our students to a four day activity about kinetic energy, electricity, & mechanics. Once their robot was constructed, they were able to experiment with variables to produce an art piece by just using their robot. Students chose their favorite piece, named it, mounted it, and wrote an artist’s statement about it. What a terrific opportunity to be creative and learn about science at the same time. Come by to view the art pieces in the 5th grade hallway. Thank you to the PTO for sponsoring this awesome experience!

Red Cross Blood Drive Announcement School Newsletter Article

Seal Elementary is proud to be participating in the American Red Cross Pint-Size Hero program, which introduces elementary school students to the importance of blood donation. The program offers our school an activity that is not only fun, but also educational and gives our students a chance to support our community.

The Pint-Size Hero program teaches students about the function of blood in our bodies, the different components of blood and the need for blood donors in our community. Students are then asked to recruit individuals to donate at our school’s upcoming blood drive. The Red Cross believes that we will help create a future generation of blood donors by getting students involved at an early age, and we want to join with their vision.

Students will take part in a Pint-Size Hero educational presentation at school and will receive a letter requesting parents, family members and other adults to donate blood on their behalf. The letter will include a donor appointment request form for those interested in donating to complete and return to school with their student.

Each student who recruits at least one person to come out to donate at the blood drive will be recognized as a Pint-Size Hero and will receive a fun appreciation item from the Red Cross. We want our students to know how important they are and about their impact on their community. This experience will be a fun way to engage our students, and the best part is knowing they are helping save lives!

Below is the information for our school’s upcoming blood drive.

Seal Elementary blood drive January 11th from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm Seal Elementary School Gym For more information or to make an appointment to donate, contact Shanna Downer at 316-747-3134 or [email protected]. Appointments may also be scheduled using the Red Cross Blood Donor App or by visiting redcrossblood.org using sponsor code DouglassKS

Please support our students and school by donating blood, recruiting blood donors or volunteering at the blood drive.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWSDerrick Davis

Student of the Month

Derrick is an 8th grader at Sisk Middle School. Derrick is the son of Carrey and Derek Davis. He has 3 siblings, Brooklyn, Becca and Caden. His favorite subject in school is Science. In his free time, Derrick has taught himself how to knit and crochet so he makes a lot of items for people in the community. Derrick is also an avid concession stand worker for all of our middle school athletic events. He is one of the most respectful kids and we are proud to call him a Bulldog!

The Middle School Rocks with the Shocks

Friday, December 4th, the seventh and eighth grade students were invited to attend the School House Rocks with the Shocks event at Koch Arena. The students had a great time cheering on the Lady Shockers against Southeast Missouri State. This activity allowed students to visit the Wichita State University campus and experience a Shocker game free of charge.

Kendall Coombes and Michael Mader were chosen to do the “ Fan Tunnel”.

TIME TO GO –SCHOLARS BOWL!

It’s time to start thinking about this year’s middle school scholars bowl season! For those of you new to the activity, scholars bowl is a scholastic competition where teams are asked questions from the categories of math, science, social studies, language arts, fine arts, and miscellaneous, which includes sports and current events. Teams of five students compete to answer the sometimes very difficult questions.

Practice will begin January 6th. For the month of January, practices will be held before and after school, Monday through Thursday. Students are not required to attend all practices and may choose to come to morning (7:30 a.m.) or afternoon practices (3:10 - 3:40 p.m.) The 7th grade practices with Mrs. Landwehr, while 8th grade practices with Mrs. Fraley.

Our season will begin with a trip to Cheney on January 21st and we are hosting a meet on Thursday, February 11th. We hope that you will be able to come to some of our meets.

If you have questions or concerns, now, or once the season has started, please do not hesitate to contact one of us: [email protected], [email protected], or the school number is 747-3340.

We hope you will encourage your child to give scholars bowl a try. We are looking forward to working with your child in this exciting activity!

Sincerely,Kim Fraley & Debbie Landwehr

Re-Enroll in the Dillons Community Rewards Program for 2016

Please consider re-enrolling or enrolling in the Dillons Community Rewards program that will support Marvin Sisk Middle School for 2016. After January 1, 2016, rewards program members need to re-enroll in the program that assists with fundraising efforts and helps our school progress toward goals and objectives for 2016. It is as easy as going to the website: dillons.com/communityrewards, sign in to your online account or create a new account if you don’t have one, scroll down to the bottom of the page to “community rewards”, click on Enroll Now, find and select the organization name (Marvin Sisk Middle School).

All of the benefits of a rewards member continue and our school receives a quarterly check that goes toward activities, goal setting rewards, and field trips.

Food Drive and Hat Day – A Winning Combination for our Community

How do you create opportunities to express the values of service, generosity and kindness? Each year during the holiday season our school has the opportunity to help our neighbors in need and demonstrate these values. The students and faculty at Sisk Middle School had a great time seeing the benefits of the growing “rows of food” down a hallway in the middle school. Students were challenged to bring non-perishable foods that would build row upon row of food. On December 11th, they also had the chance to bring a dollar’s worth of change that was counted by Mr. Menard. The $124.00 that was raised for the Ministerial Alliance took Mr. Menard twenty-two minutes to count. The twenty-two minutes of earned activities on December 18th will include Christmas Charades, a photo scavenger hunt, and scooter sleigh races. We appreciate and are encouraged by our students’ willingness to step in and donate food to our community neighbors. Thank you to the parents that helped support this annual food drive.

On December 16th, we held the 4th anual Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest. First place was Ereka Hiser, wearing a faceless angel, second place was Hailey Satkowski wearing a cresent santa head and third place went to Guthrie Burch wearing a snowman stocking. that said Merry Christmas. Each of the winners recieved fun, cheesy prizes. This event is so fun and I’m glad I could be the organizer.

4-No School-Teacher Workday5-Second Semester Begins8-Registration Deadline for Feb. 6th ACT18-No School Teacher Inservice*Seniors and their parents may apply for FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)See information below

What Is a FAFSA?

All college students are expected to contribute towards their education costs. How much you and your family will be expected to contribute depends on your financial situation — and is what’s called your Expected Family Contribution (EFC).

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used by the U.S. Department of Education to determine your Expected Family Contribution (EFC). The government conducts a “need analysis” based on your financial information, such as income, assets, and other family information.

Your application is examined by a federal processor and the results are sent by computer to the financial aid offices of the colleges you’ve chosen.

The FAFSA is the application most colleges use to determine eligibility for federal, state, and college-sponsored financial aid, including grants, educational loans, and work-study programs.

Federal Financial Aid StepsBe sure to fill out the FAFSA even if you think you

won’t qualify for federal aid.

1. Go to www.pin.ed.gov to apply for a PIN. (Both the student and parent need to apply for a PIN)

2. When you get your PIN go to www.fafsa.ed.gov to complete the FAFSA

3. Follow up on your FAFSA. After you complete the FAFSA you will receive a SAR-Student Aid Report by email or mail. Go to www.fafsa.ed.gov “check the STATUS of a submitted FAFSA”

BE AWARE OF DEADLINES: You may have to meet application deadlines, depending on the college and where you live. State and school deadlines are usually earlier than federal deadlines.
