Policy on School Closings Due to Bad Weather

It is that time of the year again to remind everyone of our school closing policy:

If adverse weather conditions exist which threaten student transportation safety before school begins, the announcement will be sent out on the districts automated SCHOOL MESSENGER SYSTEM. School Messenger allows us to make an actual recorded phone call to every parent phone number in our school data base. We also make calls to several radio and television stations who will announce the closing information on the air.

Every effort will be made to finalize the decision no later than 5:30 a.m. of school closing due to adverse weather conditions. On mornings when icing is a concern, and forecasts suggest clearing, school may be delayed with a late start time of 10:00 a.m.

Decisions on school closings are made at the district level based on National Weather Service Data, county-wide school weather hotline, and early morning observations by the superintendent and transportation director. Please do not call before 5:30 a.m., as we will be analyzing data, making observations and preparing to make the decision.

School will not be dismissed due to storm conditions that arise during the day as long as it is feasible for students and staff to remain at school safely. The district is extremely reluctant to dismiss school early if the weather is severe.

Listed below are the radio and television stations that will be notified:

Pint-Sized Blood Drive a Success!

Seal Elementary held their annual Pint-Size Blood Drive for the American Red Cross on January 12th. During our drive students are encouraged to recruit adults to come to our school and give blood. As part of the annual drive students also learn about the life saving effects of blood and how blood is “medicine.” Nurse Diane Marteney visited third through fifth grade classes to teach about the parts of blood and blood types. This year’s goal for the drive was to collect 31 pints of blood. We were able to exceed our goal by collecting 34 pints of blood. Way to go Seal Elementary students and families!

Mr. Reynolds’ PE Class Awarded Healthy Habits for Life Grant

Mr. Brad Reynolds was recently awarded a $1,000 Healthy Habits for Life grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas to use with his PE classes. His grant was a portion of the $150,000 in Healthy Habits for Life grants that were awarded to schools across Kansas this year. The grant dollars will be used during 2015 for a variety of programs. Some schools will use their grants to organize walking programs, health fairs and other activities, while others intend to purchase nutrition curriculum, heart monitors, exercise equipment or healthy snacks. Completing its ninth giving cycle, the BCBSKS Foundation has now distributed 923 Healthy Habits for Life grants in excess of $820,000. Mr. Reynolds’ grant will be used to purchase obstacle course equipment and other items to support building students’ agility.

PtO Update

It’s been a busy last few months. I’m super excited about all that we’ve accomplished and the things we have planned for rest of the year.

So far this year we’ve:

- Had 4 meetings. It’s been great to see some new and old faces. - Had a successful fundraiser that raised a profit exceeding $8800!- Used fundraiser profits to:1.Assist in the purchase of a smartboard for music class!2. Buy every student and staff member a t-shirt!3. Help sponsor the Arts Partners 3 Legged Stool residency for the 5th graders4. Help purchase Ipad gadgets to make them listening centers for some of the classes.

5. Purchase supplies for class Christmas projects- Organized volunteers to work at the Goodwill tournament concession stand. We raised approximately $275 for the PTO. We will work another event in February.- Created 3 committees to do some research/extra work on spring/fall fundraiser and teacher appreciation. - Ramped up our box tops/labels collection with classroom incentives and bins distributed around town! - Had 2 social events: Ice Cream Social and Donuts with Dad. Both went well!- Had a booth at the annual Trunk or Treat.- Benefited from Santa Pictures at Christmas Around Town – Thanks to Reagan’s Unique Boutique!- Found new ways to involve new people in PTO activities. Some who’ve volunteered were people who are not able to attend meetings but have found other ways to support PTO by volunteering time at events and with committees!

Upcoming info:

* Next PTO meeting on Monday, February 2, 6:00-7:00pm,ES Library, babysitting provided

* Muffins with Mom on Thursday, February 26, 7:30am* Bulldog Bingo & BBQ night on Saturday, March 28, 5:30-9:00, Douglass Community Building(This is a first ever event that we are very excited about. treats for testing

Each year during State Testing we encourage our students to do their very best. The middle school students will be taking a variety of state tests during the months of March and April. To help and encourage our young students, we have offered a variety of snacks that can be eaten between sections of the test. For the past several years parents have come to our rescue by supplying healthy or easy to eat treats and snacks for our students to eat such as crackers, pretzels, dried fruit and string cheese. If you are able to help our students, we will be collecting the snacks during February and March. You or your child can bring the treats for the student’s grade level to the middle school office. If you have questions regarding what type of snack to bring, amount/number of snacks please do not hesitate to call or email the middle school counselor, Sydney Zaldivar. [email protected] or 747-3331.

2014-2015 Boys Basketball

The basketball season was one of growth and goal reaching. We learned that what we did in the off season helped the regular season. The 8th graders came back this year and won more games and got into the tourney, but mostly learned how to play as a team. They will be very successful in high school. The 7th graders came in having only 4 of the 7 ever play basketball. This made for a year of heavy learning and realizing they will put in gym time this summer. Coach Hancock and Coach Gardner could not ask for a better group of kids to do what was asked of them. We appreciate the support of parents, the MS office staff, those that volunteered to do books and clock, the MS kitchen staff that washed the water bottles, Mr. Price and Mr. Lockhart that took care of the gym, and the bus drivers that got us where we needed to go. We want to give a special thanks to Mrs. Kiekel for providing lunches for the boys this season. Way to go Dawgs!

thank You!

The OPAA! Food Management Team at the Douglass Schools would like to say “THANK YOU” to New Attitudes and Yoder Meats for the gift baskets that were donated to the Sisk Middle School prize drawing. And to Fastrip Douglass LLC for the 10 King Size Candy bar gift certificates donated to Douglass High School. The drawings will be held on January 22, 2015. Names of winners will be published in the March edition of the Bulldog Growl.

Kansas Communities that Care Survey - February 18th

Students will soon be taking the Kansas Communities that Care Survey along with students statewide. This survey is a valuable tool to help understand how students perceive things like substance abuse, and bullying. It gives Kansas schools insight into the problems students face and shows what we can do to help them succeed. The information is essential to local and state grant funding and to planning effective prevention programs. All students in grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 will be taking this survey unless the school is notified of non-participation from a parent or guardian by February 9th. If you have additional questions please do not hesitate to call the school counselors.
