30 Years Ago . . .As a mother and an author, one of the fondest periods of

my life was when I decided to write mystery books forchildren. At this time (1979) kids were pretty much glued tothe TV, something parents and teachers complained about theway they do about web surfing and blogging today.

I decided to set each mystery in a real place—a place kidscould go and visit for themselves after reading the book. AndI also used real children as characters. Usually a couple of myown children served as characters, and I had no troublerecruiting kids from the book’s location to also be characters.

Also, I wanted all the kids—boys and girls of all ages—toparticipate in solving the mystery. And, I wanted kids to learnsomething as they read. Something about the history of thelocation. And I wanted the stories to be funny. That formulaof real+scary+smart+fun served me well.

I love getting letters from teachers and parents who saythey read the book with their class or child, then visited thehistoric site and saw all the places in the mystery forthemselves. What’s so great about that? What’s great is thatyou and your children have an experience that bonds youtogether forever. Something you shared. Something you bothcared about at the time. Something that crossed all agelevels—a good story, a good scare, a good laugh!

30 years later,

Carole Marsh

Christina woke up with a start. Tiressquealed with urgency in front of hergrandparents’ house. She threw back her coversand dashed to the window. Flinging back thecurtains, all she could see was the flash of asilver bumper disappearing in a black cloud ofexhaust fumes and burning rubber. The familydog, Clue, barked ferociously.

She watched Mimi, Papa, and Uncle Mikescurry across the yard to look at the

1

still-smoking tire marks on the pavement.Christina rushed out to join them. Her bare feetleft dark footprints in the dew-soaked grass.

“What’s going on?” Christina asked. “Don’t know,” Papa answered in a deep, raspy

voice that told her he hadn’t had his first cup ofcoffee. “Guess somebody was in a big hurry, orat least Clue helped them get in a big hurry.”

“That a boy, Clue,” Christina said, patting thebloodhound’s head. “Think it could’ve been thatteenager down the street?”

Mimi laughed. “Not at this time of themorning!” she said. “Most teenagers don’t getup before noon on Saturday!”

“Oh, yeah!” exclaimed Christina excitedly.“For a second I forgot that it’s Saturday—theday we’re leaving for the biggest adventure ofour lives!”

“You said it!” Uncle Mike agreed. “This isthe day I’ve been dreaming of for the past two years!”

Christina could see his van in the drivewaystuffed with bags and bags of gear and

equipment. She shivered with excitement.Christina had traveled all over the United Statesand much of the world with her little brotherGrant, grandfather Papa, and grandmotherMimi, better known to many as mystery writerCarole Marsh. Every place they went was alwaysfascinating with lots of interesting things to seeand learn, but this trip was different. This wasnot a typical place tourists would choose. Mostwouldn’t have the courage to go to a place socold, isolated, and deadly!

Ten-year-old Christina smiled proudly ather tall, handsome uncle, Mimi’s only son. Heand his friend Dave had lifted weights, climbedmore rock walls than a gecko, and run formiles and miles to prepare. Now they wereready to climb the tallest mountain in theworld—Mount Everest!

“HOW EMBARRASSING!” someone yelledfrom the front porch. They all turned at onceand saw that it was Grant.

“Why are you all standing out here in yourskivvies?” he asked.

Scurrying Skivvies

Page 15: The Breathtaking Mystery on Mt. Everest

Christina, Papa, and Mimi exchanged looksand burst into laughter. They suddenlyrealized that in the excitement of the moment, they had rushed out without even grabbing arobe. Only Uncle Mike, who had just arrivedwhen the commotion took place, was fullydressed. Papa had pulled on his cowboy boots. But the only other thing he was wearing washis sleeping shorts covered in red airplanesthat looked a lot like his own little red andwhite plane, Mystery Girl.

Mimi’s short blond hair had not seen a combyet and looked like a bird’s nest on top of herhead. She was wearing a long beige gown withred sequined hearts around the neck.

Christina shivered again, this time from thecool breeze. Her favorite jammies, covered withrunning horses, were not made for rompingoutside on a chilly, spring morning.

“Brrrrr,” Christina said through chatteringteeth. “I sure could use a cup of your hotchocolate, Mimi!”

Grant waved frantically for them to comeinside. Christina skittered across the grass,

trying to step back into the footprints she hadmade on the way out. On her right, she couldsee the jumble of footprints made by UncleMike, Mimi, Papa, and Clue. But on her left,Christina noticed other marks on the grass thatwere not shaped like feet at all. A curious line oftriangles pointed toward the line of shrubs infront of the porch. Christina let her eyes followthe trail until she saw it. Something wassparkling in one of the shrubs!

Page 17: The Breathtaking Mystery on Mt. Everest

Christina was no stranger to mystery. Duringevery trip with her grandparents, a tangled webof mystery often caught her and Grant the way aspider catches buzzing flies. She wouldn’t besurprised to find a mystery waiting for them atMount Everest, but she was surprised by amystery beginning before they even left theirhome in Peachtree City, Georgia!

“Pssst!” Christina called to Grant as he wasabout to follow the adults inside.

She reached into the shrubs and pulled out ablack envelope with gold metallic writing on it,and jumped up on the porch.

“What’s that?” Grant asked, peering at thestrange note.

“Whoever took off in such a hurry thismorning must have delivered it,” answered

7

Page 18: The Breathtaking Mystery on Mt. Everest

Christina. She traced her fingers over writingthat looked like none she had ever seen. “I don’tsee how the note could be meant for any of us,”she said. “It’s not written in English!”

Christina ran her finger under the flap andopened the envelope like something insidemight bite her. Gingerly she pulled out a note onthick black paper. Several slivers of ice fell outand shattered on the porch floor in a spray ofsparkling crystals. Squiggly writing in the samegold ink looked like it was hanging upside downfrom the lines that stretched across the page. Itwas beautiful, but mysterious. At the bottomwas a drawing of a pair of eyes and a nose thatlooked like a question mark.

“Who sends a letter on black paper in a blackenvelope with ice inside?” Grant asked. “Seemssort of creepy. Don’t you think you should showit to the adults?”

“No, Grant,” Christina answered. “UncleMike and Dave have enough worries about theirclimb—like staying alive! I don’t want to givethem anything else to worry about.”

In the kitchen, Mimi watched colorful cupsof hot chocolate spin in the microwave like acarousel. Papa sipped his coffee and asked,“Are you kids ready to fly to the other side ofthe world?”

“All packed!” Christina said proudly. “And I have plenty of games,” Grant quickly

added.Mimi plunked their hot chocolate down in

front of them. “You understand this is probablythe longest flight you’ve ever taken,” she said.

“How long will it take us to get there and landon Mount Everest?” Grant asked.

Christina rolled her eyes. “Oh, Grant,” shesaid. “You don’t land on Mount Everest!”

“Yeah,” Uncle Mike said. “If you could simplyfly a plane to the top and land, what would be thepurpose of us climbing it?”

“Right,” said Grant, nodding. “Then wheredo we land?”

Papa pulled a small globe from a shelf andspun it around. He stopped it with his thickfinger. “This is India,” he said, “and this is

China. We are flying into Nepal, this little sliverof country in between.”

“Wow!” Grant said. “It doesn’t look bigenough to land a plane in!”

Papa laughed loudly. “It’s larger than itlooks on the globe,” he said. “I promise! It’sabout the same size as Florida. You kids arelucky to get to visit Nepal. When I was a kid,the country was closed to visitors. It wasn’topened until 1951. Two years later somethingvery exciting happened.”

“I know!” Christina cried. “In 1953, SirEdmund Hillary reached the summit of MountEverest!”

Uncle Mike’s friend Dave bounded into thekitchen wearing an excited grin. “Everybody gotyour crampons packed?” he asked.

“I don’t think so,” Grant said, concerned.“What are crampons?”

“They’re spikes that you strap to your bootsso you can climb on ice and packed snow,” Dave answered.

Mimi laughed. “My high heels can do that!”

Christina chuckled at Mimi, but couldn’t helpbut worry about the ominous black note. Whatdid it mean? Was it a warning?

“Avalanche!” Christina yelled. She ran as fastas she could, but the thundering wall of snowwas gaining on her. The shelter of a big rock layahead. Can I make it before the snow swallows me?she wondered, panicked. Suddenly, Christinafelt a strong hand grab her shoulder. Was itpulling her to safety?

“Hey!” Uncle Mike said, shaking Christina.“Wake up, crew chief! We’re about to land inKathmandu, capital city of Nepal!”

Christina swallowed hard and licked her drylips, thankful that she had only been dreaming.Since Uncle Mike had named her crew chief andGrant assistant crew chief for the expedition, safety concerns were creeping into her dreams.

13

Page 23: The Breathtaking Mystery on Mt. Everest

Grant, curled up in the seat beside her, stretched his arms and legs. “It’s about time,”he said. “It’ll probably take me a long time to getmy land legs again!”

“You’re right,” Uncle Mike agreed. “The jet lag after a flight this long is a killer. That’s why we’re going to rest for a day in Kathmandu before the next leg of our adventureto the Himalayas.”

“Wait a minute,” Grant said. “I thought wewere going to Mount Everest!”

Uncle Mike tousled Grant’s curly blonde hair.“Everest is in the Himalayan Mountains, silly!”

Papa yawned loudly. “This adventure’s gotmore legs than a five-legged cow!” he said.

Mimi patted Papa’s arm. “Yes,” she agreed,“but it’s going to help me write the best mysteryI’ve ever written!”

Christina loved all of Mimi’s mysteries, butthis one would be special. Uncle Mike and Dave, who both helped Mimi with her books, would beable to tell her exactly what they saw and felt asthey climbed Everest—if they made it!

Tribhuvan International Airport was sleekand modern, but an ancient vehicle—arickshaw—was taking them through Kathmanduto their hotel.

“Namaste!” a young man said, with a brilliantwhite smile. He had ebony hair and smooth skinthe color of milk chocolate. Christina and Grantcrawled into the covered, two-wheeled carthooked to his bicycle. Christina, who didn’tunderstand his language, Nepali, smiled back. She would later learn that namaste was a lot likealoha in Hawaii. It means both hello and goodbye.

Christina poked her hand through the littlewindow in the back of the rickshaw and waved atMimi and Papa behind them. Uncle Mike andDave had taken a regular taxi so they could haulall their gear.

Promises, Promises

15

Page 25: The Breathtaking Mystery on Mt. Everest

“We need one of these so you can pull mearound!” Christina whispered to Grant, who wasbusy checking the compass Uncle Mike hadgiven him.

“Yeah—right!” Grant replied, frowning. Kathmandu was unlike any city Christina had

seen. Papa had said Nepal was one of thepoorest countries in the world, but Christinacouldn’t believe how fancy some of the buildingswere. Around windows were carved wood thatlooked like lace. Tall shrines, many with three-sectioned, pagoda-style roofs, pointed to the sky.In the busy markets, merchants sold everythingfrom scary masks to smelly fish.

An old man with a wild gray beard sat on aleopard skin and held out a bowl for donations.Temple bells clanged and the air was filled withexotic music from the sarangi, the most popularinstrument in Nepal. Its four strings, playedwith a bow like a violin, sounded like a fiddle hadmarried a set of bagpipes.

Mimi and Papa’s rickshaw sped around themand then stopped suddenly. Mimi hopped out.

“I want to get a picture of this!” she yelled. Sheaimed her camera at a colorful, but terrifyingstatue. It had six arms, a toothy, growling scowl, coiled golden serpents for earrings andbracelets, and a crown with skulls on it.

“This is Kalbhairav,” Mimi explained.“People come here to make promises they planto keep.”

“Looks like a nightmare!” Christina exclaimed. “Well, here’s my promise,” Grant said.

“Uncle Mike and Dave will make it to the top ofMount Everest!”

“I certainly hope so, Grant,” Mimi replied, staring at the majestic Himalayas in the distance.“The legend says that if someone breaks thatpromise, they will spit blood!”
