    DOC Bolgheri Superiore has to age minimum 24 months, of which 12 months at least in wood.

    On the label can be mentioned the name of the vineyard.

    The vineyards, the vinification and the bottling have to be located inside the Municipality of Castagneto Carducci.

  • 1944 Mario Incisa della Rocchetta plants the first vineyard of Cabernet at Castiglioncello di Bolgheri.

    1968 First vintage of Sassicaia, which has been released on the market with the final label in 1972.

    1974 Luigi Veronelli starts to show to the Italian market his Passion for Sassicaia.

    1977 Piermario Meletti Cavallari founds the Grattamacco estatewith release of the first vintage in 1982.

    1978 Tasting of the English wine giornal Decanter where Sassicaia vintage 1972 wins as Best Cabernet Sauvignon of more than 30 wines from 11 different countries.

    1982 Sassicaia recieves the “Vinarius” award as wine of the year.Tenuta Belvedere has been devided between the brothers Ludovico and Piero Antinori founding consequently Tenuta Ornellaia and Guado al Tasso estate.

    History of Bolgheri

  • 1983 Approval of the first Disciplinary for the protection of the Bolgheri DOC Wines but only for White and Rose. Mario Incisa della Rocchetta dies. Eugenio Campolmi founds the Macchiole estate.

    1985 Arrives the first vintage of Ornellaia. 1990 First release of Paleo from Macchiole and Guado al Tasso. 1991 Tasting of Grand Jury Europeèn where Sassicaia vintage 1985

    wins against the vintage of Medoc wines. 1994 Becomes law the modified Disciplinary with the introduction of

    DOC Bolgheri Red, DOC Bolgheri Superiore and DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia, first example of the concept of Italian “Cru”.

    are located on a plateau at 200 Mt a.s.l. The highest vineyards of all Bolgheri area.

    Cultivated Grape varieties:

    Low Spurred Cordon Density of 6.500 to 7.500 plants/Ha Soil condition: mainly melt with sand in the flat part (25 ha),

    instead in the hilly position clay with framework of calcareous stones, rich of saline and sodium components (50 ha).

    Exposure: South, South/West to West Microclimate: on the plateau 3°-4° less than the average of

    Bolgheri, high excursion between the day and the night, constant ventilation.
