It’s difficult to top 2013’s installment of Music Monday, says Holly Nimmons, execu-tive director of its organizer Coalition for Music Education in Canada.

That’s because astronaut Chris Hadfield sang the event’s anthem, ‘Is Somebody Singing, (ISS)’ co-written by Barenaked Ladies’ Ed Robertson, from space. Not only was he joined by the popular Canadian band, but also more than 70,000 students from across the country.

The one-time commander of the International Space Station is an avid musician,

who Nimmons said has spoken out about how play-ing in a band taught him how to operate as part of a team, a skill that has come in handy throughout his career.

“Learning music is essen-tial to a well-rounded educa-tion,” Nimmons said. “There are cross benefits to success in other subjects.”

This year, Music Monday, the Coalition for Music Education in Canada’s annual key event, takes place at Nathan Phillips Square this coming Monday. Music Monday is billed as the world’s largest single event dedicated to raising awareness for music education. The showcase con-cert will be webcast live.

“Schools, communities and

music professionals come together to make music one day to celebrate the gal-vanizing power of music,”

Nimmons, a Dufferin Street and St. Clair Avenue-area resident, said.

Since its inception 12 years

ago, more than six million people have joined together to “raise their voices for music education,” she added.

“We always have a show-case event and a national sing-a-long,” Nimmons said. “Thousands of people participate in city squares or in smaller events in class-rooms.”

This year’s event features Juno Award-nominated singer/songwriter Scott Helman, world-renowned classical recording brass quintet Canadian Brass, the Guelph Collegiate Vocational Institute Drumline and a long list of others.

Music Monday takes place from noon until 1:30 p.m. with the official singing of the Music Monday Anthem, ‘We Are One,’ at 12:30 p.m.

The High Park K9 Committee will host a cleanup of the off-leash area in High Park Saturday, May 7.

Participants are asked to meet at Dog Hill, by CanStage opposite the Grenadier Cafe, 200 Parkside Dr. The commit-tee will provide large garbage bags and latex gloves. As per all off-leash areas, it is man-

datory to have two cleanups per year to keep the privilege, one in the spring and one in the fall. The cleanup takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine.

Make sure to wear long sleeves and sturdy foot-wear.

When Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) chair Josh Colle and CEO Andy Byford stood up Monday to talk about Bombardier and the missing light rail vehicles, they didn’t want to dwell on the past.

On the one hand, it’s an odd subject to avoid, given the trouble the city is having with its elusive new streetcars is very much a consequence of past deci-sions.

On the other hand, the business of the day on Monday had nothing to do with repudiating past administrations, and every-thing to do with delivering Bombardier Transportation the most scathingly public single-star Yelp! review possible.

Bombardier had it coming.

The Montreal-based company should have, by the schedule of delivery, provided a total of 73 new streetcars delivered to the TTC by the end of 2015.

Actually delivered in that time? Fourteen. And as of

today? Seventeen.There were problems,

mostly to do with a deci-sion by Bombardier to outsource production of some of the custom parts to Mexico.

But Bombardier had assured the TTC that they were ironed out, and prom-ised to have 54 delivered by the end of 2016.

On Monday, Bombardier made it clear, via a new CEO, that if they work very hard they can guarantee 13 additional vehicles will be delivered by the end of the year.

That means the TTC will likely have to refurbish even more of its stock of older streetcars, adding to the $34.1 million it’s already spending to do so because of the earlier backlog.

Bombardier’s covering that much. But because of the contract the city signed,

it is only liable for $51 mil-lion in costs due to delay. It is here, of course, that one is led straight to the past – specifically, to 2009, when former mayor David Miller convened a special council meeting during a long civic strike, to ink the $1.2-bil-lion deal with Bombardier that would eventually go so very wrong.

Toronto paid a larger portion of the purchase price than it should have, as Ottawa turned down a request to pay for a third of the bill, and it came at the cost of deferring certain capital projects.

It was a competitive bid-ding process, but an imper-fect one, as the only serious competitor – the German-owned manufacturer Siemens – struggled with Canadian content require-ments and effectively disqualified itself with an untenably high bid.

And Bombardier won the contract, with a require-ment for only 25 per cent Canadian content and as it turns out a sweetheart of a

contract. It’s hard to say what

Miller’s city government might have done differ-ently. Perhaps held out for more bidders? Enforced a larger Can-Con rule to keep production out of Mexico, or done away with it entirely and forgone fund-ing that was dependent on it? Or just paid hundreds of millions more for the same number of streetcars to a foreign-owned company with a good record?

This, perhaps, is another reason why Byford and Colle aren’t too quick to blame the Miller regime for the decision. In the end, going with any of those options involved taking a chance on one of a range of options.

And while it might not always turn out the case, in this case the least expen-sive, most tempting option, was the worst bet.

Bloor bike lanes the correct path to improving safetyToronto councillors may feel they will have a

tough decision to make when they meet next week.

Absent any advice from the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee, councillors will have to decide whether to launch a pilot project on Bloor Street West to see whether a short stretch of that road can endure and maybe even benefit from a bikeway, separated from car and truck traffic.

Watching the strained debate that took place Monday at the committee, one might think the deci-sion would strain even the wisdom of King Solomon.

Bloor Street is a significant east-west artery, and removing the lanes from car traffic will cut automo-tive access in half. At the same time, climate change and a growing population dictate that we cannot

continue to encourage fossil fuel-burning cars and trucks in our downtown without offering safe alternatives. Yes, it’s another battle of car versus bike.

We hope that when this comes to Toronto council, councillors will stand down from the battle-ments and take a rational look

at this very rational plan to consider expanding our city’s cycling network.

The pilot project is just that – an experiment to see how Bloor Street and the surrounding neighbour-hoods would fare if the city were to install cycling infrastructure similar to the separated bike lanes on Sherbourne Street, and on Richmond and Adelaide streets. The separated lanes have worked out well there, in some cases tripling the number of cyclists using the routes.

That’s impressive enough. But there is another more immediate reason for trying separated lanes on Bloor.

As it stands, the street is dangerous for cyclists. Between 2008 and 2012, the stretch of road in ques-tion – between Shaw Street and Avenue Road – has had an average of 22 collisions a year. Most of those were dooring, followed by a motorist trying to pass a cyclist and a motorist driving into a cyclist out of on-street parking.

Separated bike lanes would reduce those types of accidents. It would make all Torontonians safer.

That, in and of itself, is worth a look when it comes to this pilot project. Council only has one choice.

4 Things You Need to Know When Buying a New RoofShingle manufacturers have application manuals specifying how theirproducts shouldbe installedonyourhouse.Yourproductwarranty is suppliedby the manufacturer, and could become void if the proper instructions arenot followed when your new roof system and shingles are applied.

What you should know about roof surface or roofdeck preparation:Your roof deck is the structural surface overwhich your roofing materials are applied. Allroof boards and/or plywood must be fastenedsecurely to the rafters, and damaged or rottenwood must be replaced. Your attic should beinspected before the work starts to uncoverpotential problems. A bad roof surface allowsthe nails to push up through the shingles, causing leaks.

What you should know about underlayment:A complete underlay system should be appliedbefore your shingles are installed. There aretwo types of roofing underlay, waterproof and water resistant. Waterproofunderlay is needed in areas most vulnerable to leaks, the eaves edge of theroof; in valleys, at dormer sides, aroundchimneys andaround skylights.Waterresistant underlay, often called “tar paper”, is needed on the remaining roofarea. Water resistant underlay protects the roof surface in a storm situationwhere a few shingles blow off, but cannot be replaced immediately.

What you should know about ventilation:Improper attic venting can cause your shingles to fail prematurely, and yourproduct warranty requires that your attic have proper ventilation. Ventingconsists of intake and exhaust. To facilitate proper air flow, your attic needs

intake vents located in the overhang and exhaustvents at the roof peak. A balanced ventingsystem is required; otherwise air will be pulledfrom your house. An inspection of your attic isessential to present appropriate and completeventing solutions.

What you should know about shingle quality:You have many shingle options with regard tostyle, colour, longevity and price. Estimatorsshould include at least three grades of shinglesand inform you of the real expected shingle life.In addition to their aesthetic appeal and longerlife expectancy, better quality shingles oftenprovide you with the best value when measured

on a cost per year basis.

tative, routine, emergency and essential care from licensed dentists and dental hygien-ists.

Dental services covered include: checkups, cleaning, fillings, X-rays and urgent or emergency oral health issues.

Ontario integrated six pub-licly funded children’s dental programs into one making 70,000 more children and youth eligible with a simpli-fied enrolment process, the government stated.

Baker said health care is one of the most-important issues for his constituents and proper dental care is no exception.

“Part of that is ensuring children in need get early access to good oral health as it can make a positive impact on overall health for years to come,” Baker said.

“I’m pleased to see that changes to the Healthy Smiles program are improving access to thousands more children and families in need of dental services.”

Baker attended the Eglinton Avenue West and Royal York Road area junior school armed with hundreds of Proctor & Gamble-supplied Oral-B tooth-brushes, which he handed out to students after his talk.

Westmount students sat cross-legged on the wooden gymnasium floor listening, and enthusiastically partici-pating, as Baker talked about the importance of good oral hygiene.

The little hands of 200 or so children darted up quickly when Baker asked them if they

thought taking care of their teeth was important, and again when he asked how many of them brushed their teeth every day.

When the MPP mentioned Sesame Street had been one of his favourite shows as a child, a loud “ooooooh” rose up from the floor.

Baker played “Healthy Teeth, Healthy Me — Brushy, Brush,” a Sesame Street YouTube PSA for the kindergarten to Grade 5 students.

Elmo wears green and white polka dot pyjamas in

the 90-second video as he tells children to get their toothbrush and sings “brush, brushy, brush, brushy, brush, brush”. Children brush their teeth, as do their parents, joined by Elmo’s celebrity friends, includ-ing Bruno Mars, Nicole Kidman and Jay Sean.

“I like to go to the dentist. I went recently so they could take out a cavity,” said Grade 4 student Duncan Liddell, nine. “It hurt a lot. They put a needle in my mouth.”

“Very inspiring” is how Grade 5 student Jenna Abouelalla, 10,

described Baker’s talk.“I’m sure more kids will go

to the dentist now because of this program,” she said. “I like to go to the dentist.”

Dentist Dr. John Glenny, whose dental practice is near Kipling Subway Station, mes-merized students with his big, five foot-tall red toothbrush.

Glenny taught students “two for two is what we do,” meaning brush twice a day for two minutes each time. The dentist also talked about the importance of brushing, floss-ing, eating healthy foods and visiting a dentist regularly.

“There are a lot of families in Etobicoke who can’t afford dental treatment,” Glenny said in an interview. “For the govern-ment to expand the program means more children will be able to see a dentist and have their procedures covered.”

T h e On t a r i o De n t a l Association responded posi-tively to the government’s decision to streamline the six separate publicly funded children’s oral care programs into one, Dr. Victor Kutcher,

president of the Ontario Dental Association, said in a state-ment.

“Eliminating duplication and creating a single pro-gram means more children and youth can go to school with a healthy smile,” Kutcher said, adding the association will continue to work with the government “to ensure sustain-able and equitable funding for dental programs.”

Ontario’s health minister said Tuesday the government’s expanded Healthy Smiles Ontario program is aimed at enhancing children’s overall health.

“We are making it easier for children to get the dental care they need because having good oral health and a healthy smile can have positive impacts on a child’s overall health, self-esteem and ability to learn,” Dr. Eric Hoskins said in a state-ment.

The health minister encour-aged Ontario families to visit www.ontario.ca/healthysmiles to learn if they’re eligible and to enrol in the program.

Metroland Media Toronto has reason to celebrate this week.

Two of its managing edi-tors – Grace Peacock and Alan Shackleton – took first and second place respectively in this year’s Ontario Community Newspaper Association 2015 Better Newspapers Awards last Friday.

Grace Peacock, manag-ing editor for the Bloor West Villager and Etobicoke and York Guardians, took home the top prize.

Judges singled out Peacock’s ‘initiative’ and ‘innovation’ in the role she’s held since 2008.

“Keeping track of Grace Peacock’s numerous commu-nity undertakings is a little like counting kittens. Just when you think you’ve accounted for them all, another cute ball of fur emerges from under the couch. Grace scored highest in initiative and innovation because she did more than lend a helping hand, she led the parade, all in the service of her newspaper and her com-munity. Also, she is excellent at her job. In fact, if there is a better word than “excellent,”

this would be a good place to use it.”

Scarborough, East York and Beach-Riverdale Mirrors man-aging editor Al Shackleton was honoured for his quiet strength in doing his job.

“In a career that has spanned close to 30 years, Al Shackleton has embodied what it means to be a newspaper editor at the grassroots level. There is a quiet competence to his work, which is evident not

only in the awards he has won for his newspaper, but in his involvement with numerous community activities. The word “humble” is often used to describe Al. Perhaps it’s time he stood to take a bow.”

Founded in 1950 and based in Toronto, the OCNA is a non-profit industry association comprising more than 300 member newspapers through-out the province. To learn more, visit www.ocna.org

fabric scissors and measuring tape; bike helmets, locks, bells, reflectors and lights. Although the focus is on adult bicycles, Green said the group has not turned down donations of children’s bikes.

Both bikes and sewing machines must be in working condition, but age doesn’t matter, especially when it comes to the sewing machines.

“The old ones were built to last,” Green said.

The goal is to tune up the bikes as well. RRR is seeking volunteers willing to help with this endeavor. CultureLink will connect the bicycles with the families and ensure they know the rules of the road and how to operate them safely. They will be taught how to use sewing machines as well.

RRR was founded by Green and longtime friend Barb Willitts during a conversation on the dock of Willitts’ cottage in Temagami last summer.

They, like many Canadians, have been moved by the current refugee crisis – the danger and devastation that many families are facing as they flee not only Syria, but other places around the world.

Since September, the group has grown to more than 40 members and is open to any others who would like to get involved. In February, RRR hosted a Roncesvalles Refugee Gala FUNraiser at St. Casimir’s Church Hall on Roncesvalles Avenue. There

were a variety of musicians and entertainers, including a magi-cian, food stations brimming with creations by top restaurants and caterers, beer and wine as well as a signature drink from a donor. There was also a silent auction with food, drink, baskets and other items up for grabs.

RRR is still collecting household items.
