The cherry blossom trees in High Park are anticipated to hit full bloom in two to three weeks, a spokesperson at the High Park Nature Centre said yesterday.

“Some of the buds are just starting to turn green,” the cen-tre’s Mallory Parks said.

Once most of the buds are bursting with green, it will take about two weeks before the blossoming begins. Peak bloom lasts only for about a week. The nature centre has a cherry blos-som watch on its website and is

encouraging everyone to check back daily for updates.

Thousands of people from Toronto and beyond visit High Park every spring to participate in the centuries-old Japanese tradition of sakura hanami, which translates roughly into ‘cherry blossom flower view-ing.’

The big glowing TORONTO sign that made its debut at Nathan Phillips Square last July could become a permanent fixture in Toronto’s downtown – along with other, more abbreviated signs, that would travel around the city for special events.

Toronto’s economic develop-ment committee voted Tuesday to approve the plan to make the sign permanent and come up with another, more portable version. Committee Chair Norm Kelly said the sign, which has become a fixture since it was created to promote the 2015

Pan Am Games, has turned into a promotional signpost for the city.

“I can tell you that people a ro u n d t h e w o r l d h a ve responded very favourably. It also helps to highlight City Hall. One of the most retweeted photos of Nathan Phillips Square is the sign — an iconic City Hall with explosions and fireworks going off in the back-ground said Kelly.

Indeed, according to city staff the sign has taken flight on social media, with 122 million social media impressions since it was installed July 5, 2015.

Staff said that it influences “the cultural zeitgeist.”

Davenport area residents Kim and Harry Chung thought they’d be at each other’s throats, yet the couple who have been married almost a decade called their experi-ence on the W Network’s reno competition series ‘Game of Homes’ a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“Overall, it was a great expe-rience,” Kim told The Villager in a phone conversation about a week before Season 2 of the series was set to air. “Through this experience we strength-ened our relationship.”

For eight weeks, the Chungs battled it out against three other amateur home reno-vation teams of two while living in a rundown house and attempting to out-reno their rivals’ room-by-room.

“It was pretty intense,” Harry recalled. “We were living in a construction zone. We

didn’t get to see our families; it was very tough.”

Filmed in Toronto this

season, the show had a new host, Dave Salmoni, of ‘Expedition Impossible’ and

‘Rogue Nature,’ new resident judges Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan of ‘Colin and Justin’s Home Heist’ fame, and guest judges, who included Jillian Harris and Todd Talbot, known for ‘Love It or List It Vancouver.’ Judged for their style, skill and stamina, the reno teams were pitted against each other on a mission to win the grand prize: a home, including furniture, plus a plot of land to put it on. Teams were also awarded each epi-sode and prize included a trip for two to Tahiti.

The second season pre-miered Tuesday on the W Network. Although the Chungs remained tight-lipped about details of the show and its out-come, they did reveal that it was very competitive, with lots of drama, epic moments, unexpected events and lively characters.

“Would we do it again? Yes,” Kim said. “If anyone has the opportunity to do

something like this, I’d say try it. It’s an experience you won’t forget.”

The Chungs stumbled upon the casting call in a local cafe. Married nine years, they have two children, five and a half and two years of age. The show’s promotional material describes them as “the clas-sic over-extended sandwich generation.”

Winning a home would mean financial freedom for their family; it would mean being able to spend more time with their children. Harry is a handy-man, who has renovated the family’s bathroom, while Kim is a real estate agent.

“We worked really, really hard. There were a lot of sleepless nights,” Kim said. “Although we had limited renovation experience in terms of skill level, we were very, very eager to learn.”

Bloor West Village Players completes its 2015-16 season with another comedy, ‘Fox On the Fairway,’ by Ken Ludwig, the author of Village Player’s 2012 comedy hit ‘Lend Me a Tenor.’

A tribute to the great English farces of the 1930s and 1940s, ‘Fox On the Fairway’ is filled with mistaken identi-ties, slamming doors, and over-the-top romantic she-nanigans. It’s described as a “furiously paced comedy that recalls the Marx Brothers’ classics.

“Farce is an art form,” director Katherine Bignell-Jones, said in a statement. “Buffoonery at its best. Because of its physicality

and premium on split-second timing, it takes many hours of hard work by cast and crew to create.”

She credits her “dream team of brilliantly talented people” – including her cast of Conor Ling, Kristy Paillé, Steve Ness, Richard Hoffman, Whitney Alexander and Allyson Landy.

‘Fox On the Fairway’ opens April 22 and runs until May 14 at 8 p.m. (with Sunday mati-nees May 1 and 8 at 2 p.m.), at the Village Playhouse, 2190 Bloor St. W. Tickets cost $22.

Back Lane Studios, and Revue Cinema, present the latest installment of the Extraordinary Women series with a screening of ‘Calling Hedy Lamarr’, a documentary about Hollywood star Hedy Lamarr, on Sunday.

A new pilot project that allows library patrons to borrow a musical instrument simply with their library card is a big step in the right direction.

The Sun Life Financial Musical Instrument Lending Library officially launched this past week at the Parkdale library, now giving the opportunity for aspiring musicians to sign out instruments ranging from violins and guitars to a full-size keyboard and a banjo.

It’s a step in the right direction in making music more accessible to the community especially for the youth as well as those who can’t afford to buy good-quality instruments.

Just as several organizations have seen the value in youth playing sports by subsidizing expensive equip-

ment, this program shines a light on the value of youth play-ing music to enrich their lives.

It’s also a step in the right direction in making Toronto a music city by cultivating home-grown talent.

It was fitting that in atten-dance at the launch event were

two successful Canadian musicians – Juno Award-winning artist Chantal Kreviazuk and her husband, Our Lady Peace frontman Raine Maida.

Maida told Metroland Media Toronto that he didn’t have access to musical instruments until his brother bought one when he was 12 years old.

To ensure more kids have that opportunity to play music, Maida and Kreviazuk donated a guitar and keyboard of their own to add to the 100 instruments already in the collection.

The community can support this initiative, too. Residents can donate their own gently used or new musical instruments to this pilot program, which runs until the end of 2017, and help it grow and expand to libraries across the city.

There’s a Musical Instrument Donation Drive, which continues until May 7, and things are off to a great start.

Calls have already come in from people wanting to donate such instruments as bongo drums, French horns, flutes, erhu (Chinese fiddle) and midi control-lers.

Library staff noted more diverse instruments from different cultures are welcome.

Pilot project opens music to everyone

NDP crisis has been a long time in the makingLast weekend, the New Democratic Party member-ship did what is unthinkable among mainstream Canadian party politics and ousted their leader Tom Mulcair. The shockwaves carried across the land: the NDP, stalwart voice of Canadian progressive thinking, is in crisis!

Of course, the NDP has been in crisis for years and particularly for those of us watching from Toronto.

Although you certainly can’t blame the late Jack Layton, it’s easy to mark the beginning of that crisis with the former federal NDP leader’s electoral success and then his death, both in 2011. The NDP was briefly the Official Opposition in Ottawa. As Stephen Harper’s Conservatives used their majority govern-ment to alienate much of the country, the NDP became a de-facto govern-ment in waiting.

But it wasn’t just that collection of newly elected MPs that walked away with expectations raised. Layton

himself offered inspiration from his death bed. Love, he told the country, is better than anger. Hope is better than fear and opti-mism, better than despair.

New Democrats, at least politically, cherry-picked: Optimism and hope, that the party that had tradi-tionally been a third-party left-of-centre conscience, might persuade voters to allow them to lead; and also fear, that if they led too much with their left-of-centre conscience then they’d never win.

It was a bad and self-destructive lesson. The Ontario NDP forced a costly provincial election in 2014, rejecting in conscience the most left-of-centre provincial budget that a Liberal government had ever put forward. Leader Andrea Horwath made some gains for the party,

but in Toronto lost some of the party’s most histori-cally secure seats. The same year, Olivia Chow turned a commanding lead in the polls to a third-place finish in the Toronto mayoralty race, with a campaign that did tack more to the left, but was timid and unambi-tious. And last year, Mulcair did much the same thing federally, when he led the party to a place somewhat to the right of the Liberals, and predictably collapsed. It was enough to wipe the slate clean for New Democrats in Toronto. Now there seems to be strong interest in the grassroots of the party in turning back to its progressive roots, embracing as many mem-bers have, the so-called Leap Manifesto, which urges the party to return to its environmentalist, socially- and economically-inclusive roots.

But don’t count out the lure of power to eclipse conscience. Alberta New Democrat Premier Rachel

Notley is still providing a lone successful example of the pragmatism that has proved so toxic to the party. At the convention, she provided a reminder the only way to make that stick for more than one term is to lighten up on the pipeline opposition. You’d like to think that in this age of surging U.S. presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders and “Sunny Ways” Justin Trudeau, the original Canadian party of hope and social justice and change would be in an unambigu-ous position to capitalize on the mood, and maybe use that to take their shot at forming a serious progres-sive government one day.

Instead, the NDP is tan-gled in its own ambitions. Disentanglement will take time, and when it’s over, who’s to say what will be standing in its place?

A prescribed burn in designated areas of High Park is scheduled to take place tomorrow.

Current forecasts predict optimal weather for the burn, announced the city’s Parks, Forestry and Recreation department, Wednesday.

A public briefing to outline plans for the burn will be held in the park prior to ignition in the Grenadier Restaurant parking lot at 1 p.m. The burn is expected to start at 2 p.m. – the exact time will be dependent on

weather conditions – and is expected to be complete at 5 p.m.

Some areas of the park will be restricted to the public and some park roads will be closed. Residents are advised to avoid High Park during the burn if they are concerned about the risk of inhaling smoke from burn-ing vegetation, which could include poison ivy. Residents and businesses in surrounding neighbourhoods are encouraged to close windows, doors and ventilation intakes during the burn to prevent any smoke from entering their homes or buildings because smoke can travel up to several kilometres away from the burn sites.

A prescribed burn is a deliberately set and carefully controlled fire that burns low to the ground and con-sumes dried leaves, small twigs and grass stems, but does not harm larger trees. Prescribed burns are part of Toronto’s long-term management plan to protect and sustain the city’s rare black oak savannah habitat. A fire boss with extensive prescribed burning experience created the 2016 burn plan, and will be implementing it with assistance from Parks, Forestry and Recreation staff. Toronto Fire Services and police have been noti-fied and will assist if required.

Public Meeting NoticeDavenport Diamond Grade Separation

Metrolinx, an agency of the Province of Ontario, is working to transform the way the regionmoves. As part of plans to use GO rail corridors as the backbone of an electrified rapid transitnetwork that connects communities and people through a reliable, frequent rail and light railservice, we are looking at ways to remove the Davenport Diamond rail-to-rail crossing to increasereliability and safety.

The Project

As a unique piece of rail infrastructure, options to remove the crossing have been reviewed andprevious meetings have focused on the feasibility and community impacts from the reviewedoptions. Over the past year, meetings were held to assist in improving the design with continuedinput from the community.

“We built a sign we thought would last a couple of months and we hit a home run,” he said.

The committee approved a plan to allocate $150,000 to keep the TORONTO sign up and running for the remainder of the year. Next year, the sign’s future will be decided

through the budget process. As well, council will consider the

creation of a mobile sign that can travel to various events.

It likely wouldn’t be a full spelling of TORONTO, as staff said that stor-age and maintenance of all seven letters would be prohibitively expen-sive. Staff are considering signs such as “The 6”, “T Dot” and “T.O.”

In addition, the plan would see the sign be registered as a City of Toronto Mark.
