BELIEVING the local area “doesnot receive that attention which itsunique natural attractions and thetalents of its inhabitants deserve”the Blackwood, Coromandel andBelair Club Literacy Society beganin 1914 to produce ‘The BlackwoodMagazine’.

Costing threepence, this magazinewas published monthly for just theone year and became a unique partof Blackwood’s history.

With a masthead that proudly pro-claimed montibus omnia bona, which loosely translates as ‘all goodthings come from the hills’, the mag-azine included community concerns, advertising, church, sporting andclub news, weather, transport andshopping information, poetry, andstories of local identities.

The magazine was the officialorgan of the Blackwood,Coromandel and Belair ClubLiterary Society in which the editorssought to address their belief that thelocal area “does not receive thatattention which its unique naturalattractions and the talents of its

inhabitants deserve."(January p3). The twen-ty or so page magazinewas also available forsale at the AdelaideRailway Station.

Throughout 2014, to celebrate thecentenary of The BlackwoodMagazine as well as to promote ourlocal history, community members(facilitated by the Blackwood ActionGroup and supported by The City ofMitcham’s Heritage ResearchCentre) will reproduce 1914 maga-zine snippets in The BlackwoodTimes.

Aimed at giving contemporaryreaders a snapshot of the lives, timesand issues of hills residents 100years ago, and how times havechanged, the series will encouragereaders to preserve the special com-munity spirit that has always existedin the Mitcham Hills.

Reading the first issue, no onecould doubt how proud the editorswere of their local area:

The Blackwood spirit is theessence of kindliness, simplicity,

brotherliness, and above all, loyalty. In our experience few can live inBlackwood without assimilating thatspirit very largely. For the barbar-ian from the suburbs who comes tolive among us with all his vices thickupon him, is soon so tamed, so soft-ened, that he might have been bornin the midst of us. (January p3)

Just 12 months and 12 issues laterthe magazine ceased publication.

When Great Britain declared waragainst Austria and Hungary inAugust 1914, the Australian govern-ment sent troops in support. Faraway and insignificant asBlackwood may have seemed on theworld stage, the beginning of WorldWar I had a great impact on its mag-azine.

"Many a good man has been hungfor no fault of his own, and ‘TheBlackwood Magazine’, because theKaiser has chosen to embroil the

world, is tobe suspend-ed. We bidour readersfarewell with

a good heart, and a confident beliefthat they will read us once again.”(December p1)

Might you or your club or schoollike to get involved in the project?Opportunities could include:* "Then & Now" - Juxtapose an

article from the 1914 magazinewith 2014.

* A personal story about your hillsrelative who served in WW1.What was it like for those (largelywomen and children) left behind.

* Iconic shops of the past and pre-sent.To contribute photos or to discuss

your involvement please contactPauline Dodd ([email protected]) phone 8278 5229 orLindy Taeuber email:[email protected]

Are you a retired or semi-retired profes-sional person and looking to meet otherlike-minded people?

Then the Combined Probus Club ofEden Hills which has been in existence for17 years may be the group for you.

It caters for both men and women, sin-gles and couples, and as with all ProbusClubs is designed to help retired peoplekeep their minds active, expand their inter-ests and enjoy friendship.

Unlike Rotary (the founder of theProbus organisation), Probus clubs are notinvolved in fund raising, and the minimalannual membership fee is totally used forthe running of the club.

Regular outings are organised to localtheatres and places of interest, and everytwo years members go on a week-long trip, often to an interstate destination, such aslast year’s Ballina one.

In September last year 29 club membersof the Combined Probus Club of EdenHills flew to Ballina in northern New SouthWales. They all had a very enjoyableweek, with accommodation and meals atthe Ballina-Byron Motor Inn, and dailybus trips to such places as Tweed Heads,Lismore, Nimbin and Byron Bay.

If you are retired, and are interested injoining, why not contact the Secretary,Colin Barry on 8379 2457, and arrange tocome along to one of the meetings as theirguest. You will be made very welcome, and if you like what you see you may liketo join the club.

The club meets in the BlackwoodCommunity Centre, Young StreetBlackwood, on the second Monday of eachmonth. Meetings begin at 9.30am, and, fol-lowing a short business session, morningtea and fellowship, members enjoy listen-ing to the guest speaker for the month. ❐❐

EXCITING PLANS FOR EXTERIOR OF BUILDING . . . . .

Major refit in expansion

OVER the last couple of months, BlackwoodTimes readers have had the chance to enter acompetition to win a ‘Kangaroo Island Holiday’valued at $2500.

Travelaffare Blackwood in conjunction withSealink Travel Group organised the competitionand were really pleased with the response fromthe Blackwood community.

“It has been a very successful promotion for usand we have been inundated with entries fromhundreds of Blackwood Times readers returningtheir vouchers to our office,” said SonjaLeicester, Marketing Manager at Travelaffare.

“The winner was drawn in our offices on

11 December and Melannie Bendon fromBlackwood is the lucky winner of the prize.”

Melannie may look familiar to some readers asshe has also won a $200 Blackwood ShoppingSpree Competition with The Blackwood Times.

“I nearly didn’t get my entry in,” saidMelannie. “I only posted it the day beforeentries closed.

“My husband and I are thrilled with the prize. The last time we went to Kangaroo Island wasover 20 years ago.”

Thanks go to Sealink and Travelaffare fororganising such a great prize - and to all thosewho entered the competition. ❐❐

EVER wondered what an injured kangaroo orgalah can survive on when rescued? You’ll be sur-prised to find out that a few weetbix, some sun-flower seeds or a cup of muesli would be on theirmenu.

Last year one local business decided to hold anappeal to support the wholly volunteer team atMinton Farm Animal Rescue Centre, located inCherry Gardens.

This wonderful self-funded organisation whichopened in 1992, works to support native and injuredanimals back to health, so when appropriate, theycan be released back into the wild.

At this time of the year while we all enjoy ourfestive holidays, this team of volunteers feels thepressure of an increased number of animal rescues, caused in part by the increased traffic on the roads.

The inaugural appeal last year organised by MarkBurns of LJ Hooker Blackwood in conjunction withBev Langley of Minton Farm Animal Rescue, raised over $4,000 worth of food donated in kind by

the generous people and businesses of the AdelaideHills community.

Support Minton Farm and their injured animalsagain by donating food, some of which is availablefrom your local supermarket - including weetbix, breakfast cereals and muesli, dry dog food andpoultry mixes. Or if you’re near the pet shop - getsome animal pellets, bird seed or hay/chaff.

While Bev explained that “after the festive sea-son, it’s all hands on deck for our team as they carefor injured animals and this valuable support makesour work easier by freeing up essential resources forthe Rescue Centre.”

Anyone interested in donating food can drop itoff either at LJ Hooker Blackwood, 227 Main Road,Blackwood up to Friday 10 January; and afterwardsdirect to Minton Farm at 455 Cherry Gardens Road.

And if you would like to donate your time as avolunteer or make a financial contribution head towww.mintonfarm.org for all the details. ❐❐

DRAKES Foodland Blackwood customers willsoon be benefitting from a $1.5 million plusupgrade to the store located in the BlackwoodFoodland Shopping Centre.

Drakes Operation Manager Phil Shayler hasconfirmed at time of writing, they are in negotia-tion to sign leases on the two vacant shops at thenorthern end of the forecourt, (the former carpetand giftware shops), and plans had been drawnup to transform them into a new deli and bakerywithin the store.

“The fruit and veg section will be relocatedand customers will also benefit from a brand newfront end check out area,” he said.

Phil also hinted there were some exciting plansfor the exterior of the building too. “We’ve beenworking with the Blackwood Action Group onideas for the frontage of the two former shops, and we think people will be impressed when theysee the end result,” he said.

Drakes Supermarkets has been keen to expandits Blackwood store for a while however it islimited by parking regulations. “We would liketo offer more to shoppers, and would love todouble the size of this store, but unfortunatelythere simply isn’t the space to do this,” he said.

Not only will shoppers benefit from theupgrade, but the local community will continueto benefit too.

“Supporting the community has always beenan important part of Drakes Supermarkets,” saidPhil. “As well as our 5 per cent discount offeredon Wednesdays for Aged/Veteran PensionerCard Holders, five local organisations, BelairGuides, Blackwood High School, CoromandelValley Primary School, Blackwood BowlingClub, and Beacon Emergency Relief benefitfrom our Drakes Supermarkets CommunityDollars Programme.

“Last year Drakes Foodland Blackwood gave

It is hoped the refurbishment will begin in lateJanuary and will be completed by end of August.

“I’d like to thank Blackwood customers for their continued patronage and to

apologise in advance for any inconvenience which may result through-out the refurbishment,” concluded Phil.

Fears for children’s safety BRIGHTON Parade resident Daniel Molenaar has said hisfamily may be forced to move as he fears for his children’ssafety if nothing is done to stop the speeding vehicles along hisresidential street.

“I love the street and our neighbours, and we don’t want tomove, but my children’s safety must come first,” he said.

Last month this paper reported on Mitcham Council’s deci-sion not to take the Blackwood South Traffic ManagementReview to public consultation.

Council opted instead for administration to work with the theCraigburn and Park Ward councillors, and Mayor to refineoptions within the draft Review and provide a further report tocouncil. Some councillors who had voted against communityconsultation felt the Review needed to address Blackwoodroundabout issues further.

Following this decision, Mayor Picton met with the Hillselected members and administration on site in November toassess the proposals for traffic calming as part of theBlackwood South Traffic Management Review. “Council isaware of the concerns of local residents regarding the increas-ing traffic and speeding issues in the area,” he confirmed.

Paris Molenaar, Daniel’s wife, also made a deputation toCouncil on behalf of Brighton Parade residents last month. Inthis deputation, she highlighted while the Review noted the

number of vehicles travelling along the Parade, (over 2000 carseach day), it didn’t note the traffic also included buses, trucksand heavy machinery on a regular basis.

“The rectification of the Blackwood roundabout may reducethe volume of traffic in Brighton Parade, however it will notslow down the cars,” she said, adding the Review also didn’thighlight nearly every resident in the street has nearly been hitas they turn into their driveway.

“It [the Review] doesn’t note the tailgating or abusive behav-iour by other motorists for simply doing the speed limit, or justcrossing the road,” Paris said.

“The Review doesn’t note that residents fear a speedingvehicle may crash into their home so have moved their chil-dren’s bedroom to the rear of the house. It doesn’t note wit-nesses citing incidences of cars and motorcycles driving so fastthey become airborne.”

Paris felt the combination of the volume of traffic, the highspeeds, the many hills, narrowness and blind spots along theroad meant it was a safety issue that couldn’t be ignored.

Commenting on the issues, Mayor Picton said: “We nowhave a better understanding of the proposed traffic calmingtreatments. Following these discussions a report will be pre-sented to Council in February.”

It is anticipated that this report will include a number of traf-fic and infrastructure options as well as provide details of thecosts involved to assist Council in considering funding options.

AN APOLOGY: In the December issue, an article on the speeding issues, insome instances incorrectly referred to Brighton Parade as Brighton Road.

a family“I CAN’T do this anymore,” said JayneHarris to her husband as she sat down onthe couch at home and her jeans literallycut in her half and she had trouble breath-ing!!

“Jayne came in enquiring if we couldhelp her with a little weight loss,” saidJodi Kappler, proprietor of HealthyInspirations Blackwood.

“But more importantly Jayne’s doctorhad instructed her to lower her bloodpressure or she would need to go on med-ication.”

It was at this moment, Jayne, aCoromandel Valley resident decided shehad to do something - here is her amazingjourney to a new life ....

I opened the local newspaper and thereit was: an advert for Healthy Inspirationsinviting me to come and trial the centrefor free: no longer a cost excuse, bugger.

I chose Healthy Inspirationsbecause of the friendly, non-threatening environmentwhere I felt supported andcomfortable. I feel surround-ed by friends, not coaches.

I met with the most amaz-ing team of lifestyle coachesand we planned out a nutri-tion and exercise plan and offI went.

Within the first few weeks I

had lost a few kilos’ (great motivation)and I was learning so much about foodand good nutrition it was empowering. Thebest part about this is that my family isalso learning by eating the same way andensuring that our portions were right.

Now 5 months on and I am the happiestI have been in a long time. I am just over15kgs lighter, over 44cm smaller and myhusband comments regularly on my newfound confidence.

This has been a truly amazing experi-ence that has not only benefitted me with agorgeous new body and confidence, but mywhole family now has a role model forbeing "healthy".

Trust me, the journey and investment inyour health is worth everything.

Don’t make excuses (and I know most ofthem), because vision without action is anhallucination and you need to stop day

HEWETT Reserve Clubrooms, near Adey Road and GarnetAvenue in Blackwood, are set to benefit from an extensiveupgrade with Mitcham Council planning to turn this reserveinto a ‘sporting hub’ for the Blackwood community.

Currently, the Hewett Reserve Clubrooms are used bythree clubs - Coromandel Cricket Club, Woods PanthersNetball Club and Blackwood Tennis Club.

The clubs at the reserve are three of Mitcham’s largestclubs. Coromandel Cricket Club has been based at theHewett Sports Reserve site since 1892. The BlackwoodTennis Club was established in 1904, and is one of thelargest and most successful tennis clubs in the SouthernDistricts Tennis Association. The Woods Panthers Netballclub has been based at Hewett since 1999 following themerging of several clubs and is the only netball club inMitcham playing on Council facilities.

The clubrooms are no longer suitable for the needs ofthese clubs and not only require considerable upgrading, butfacilities are inadequate and there are no showers or accessi-ble toilets. Plans have already been undertaken by architectsand consulting engineers to undertake major works on thebuilding.

The Preliminary Cost Estimate places the total projectcosts at around $465,000 to complete all stages of theupgrade including: demolition of existing toilets, kitchen, sports storage, new toilets, shared kitchen, outdoor decksand external storage sheds, etc.

The project currently has allocated $105,000 Councilfunding in 2013/14 for Stage 1 (upgrades to the change-rooms and clubrooms); with an additional $120,000 fromCouncil being brought forward from 2014/15.

To assist with costs to the upgrade, Council also voted toapply for a $100,000 grant from the Local GovernmentStimulus Package Funding; together with the allocation ofthe $20,000 one-off contribution from Telstra as part of thelease deal for Telstra’s 30m phone tower on the Reserve.

Given that architect’s plans and preliminary costing esti-mates have already been developed, this project meets the‘shovel-ready criteria’ for the Local Government StimulusPackage grant funding application.

If Council is successful with the grant application, someof the conditions include preference been given to local con-tractors and the creation of jobs, and projects must com-mence within two months of receipt of grants.

It is a project that is already anticipated to require fund-ing from Council and if the grant funding were received, thiswould reduce the amount of capital funding required byCouncil.

It is currently planned to include kitchen works (approxi-mately $40,000) in Stage 3 of the upgrade. This stagerequires additional funding, which in conjunction with theclubs, would need to be sought to complete the upgrade ofthe clubrooms.

The works that would be part of Stage 3 would include:outdoor decking, storage, openable windows on the easternside and the operable walls. ❐❐

Stay on track to a slimmer futureEVEN before the children go back toschool, many people who had set NewYear’s resolutions to lose weight havestrayed from their path to a slimmerfuture.

Here are some tips which may helpyou to stay on track:1. Make sure that you are losing weight for yourself first and

for the right reasons. 2. For long lasting motivation you must have: patience, per-

sistence, positive thinking & passion for your goal.. 3. Set realistic goals for your goal weight and your rate of

weight loss. Diets that result in rapid weight loss or thathave a limited range of foods or that leave you hungry orfeeling deprived, should be avoided.

4. Aim for a balanced, varied food intake, allowing for occa-sional indulgences and meals out. If you can, have a pro-gram devised and personalised for you by a Dietitian.

5. Focus on the positives. For example, rather than dwellingon the foods or drinks you have to cut back, focus insteadon what you can eat more of, the new recipes you want totry and how much better you will feel and what you willbe able to do, when you’re slimmer.

6. Minimise temptation and maximise variety by planningyour menus and shopping list in advance. (If it’s not inthe fridge, you can’t eat it.)

Proceeds from this event will be donat-ed to St Vincents de Paul and tickets are$25pp with the bar opening at 7pm andthe show starting at 8pm.

For those ex-football players that stillhave the desire to play, why not join upwith the Blackwood AFL Masters - youonly need to be over the age of 33 yearsand enjoy a ‘kick & a catch’ - come alongto the comedy night to find out more andhave a laugh at the same time.

7. Gain greater insight into your eating habitsby keeping a food diary and then planways to manage your eating better.

8. If you are an emotional eater, discover‘what1s eating you’, before you turn tofood for all the wrong reasons. If you feelstressed when you get home from work, instead of opening a bottle of wine orchocolate bar, take the dog for a walk tolet off some energy or run a hot bath tohelp you relax .

9. Buy an outfit a size smaller than your cur-rent size as an incentive to lose weightthen put it in a place where you’ll see itdaily, like on the outside of your bedroomdoor .
