    Florida Accelerates Print Gathering Plan

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement(FDLE) hasspent $7.4million onProject Falcon toaccelerate theprogression of gathering palm

and fingerprints, enlargethe storagespace for thoseitems and

increase electronic search capabilities. TheFalcon Biometrics System was created totackle that problem. The FBI currentlyoperates the Integrated Automated FingerprintIdentification System, which is a nationaldatabase for fingerprints and images used bylaw enforcement agencies. The FalconBiometrics System is comparable, but its

entries are from cases that occurred in Floridaand it contains mug shots, fingerprints, palmprints and images of tattoos and scars.

A New Combination BiometricFingerprint and Smart Card Reader

SecuGenannounced theavailability of theSecuGen iD-USBSC a combinedfingerprint readerand smart cardreader. The iD-USB SC can useUSB device that

facilitates dual-factor authentication right outof the box. The new unit targets the fastgrowing number of projects and applicationsthat combine fingerprint biometrics with smartcards. The SecuGen iD-USB SC reader containsSecuGen's popular optical fingerprint sensorwith a highly scratch resistant platen and

comes in a desk mountable case. SecuGenintends to follow this product shortly with therelease of a fully FIPS 201/PIV compliantversion.

authentication and removal of criminal aliens,ICE has removed 144 individuals, while theremaining are in immigration proceedings orwill be removed from the United States oncethey serve their criminal sentence. In March2009, as part of the Secure Communitiesstrategy, ICE deployed IDENT/IAFISinteroperability to Fairfax County lawenforcement agencies, which enablesfingerprints submitted during the bookingprocess to be checked automatically againstthe Department of Justice's ( DOJ ) criminalhistory records and DHS records, includingimmigration status. When fingerprints matchDHS records, ICE is automatically notified andpromptly determines if enforcement action isrequired. This process applies to all individualsarrested and booked into custody, not justthose suspected of being foreign nationals.

    Despite Privacy Fears BiometricScanning Rises

With recent advances in the technology, newbiometrics systems are coming onto the scene, such as the full-body scanners that the U.S.Department of Homeland Security announcedwill be landing at 11 U.S. airports by summer2010. In addition, as more scanning systemsroll out, thus linking citizens to databases,

privacy advocates worry about the risks of having personal information in the open.

"We don't want to the seethe same problems we'veseen with other identificationsystems," said Lillie Coney, associate director of theElectronic PrivacyInformation Center, a publicinterest research group in

Washington, D.C. "Before people jump in the

deep end of the pool, they need to reallyconsider the short-term and long-termconsequences. Any information that's collectedhas got to be protected."

    Virtual Doormen Don't Need Tips

Doormen could be replaced or have theirduties sliced by voice and face recognitiontechnology. A company called Kent SecurityServices provides virtual doorman services. Hundreds of buildings in New York City arealready monitored with video cameras andaudio communication instead of live doormen, but Kent adds biometrics to the surveillance. When somebody approaches the door, thecomputer begins clicking away and takes 40photos of the subject per second andcompares it to the photo of the resident onfile. If it's a match, you're in.. If no match isfound, the computer asks, "Do you live in thebuilding?" and the subject's response issubjected to voice recognition comparison. Sofar, Kent has not figured out how to get thedevice to hail a taxi.

    AOptix Partners with DaonAdvantage

AOptix Technologies, Inc., a developer of irisbiometrics products and long-distance wirelessoptical communications solutions, announced ithas signed a partnership agreement withDaon, a provider of identity-assurancesoftware products, to participate in theDaonAdvantage Program. As part of thispartnership, the AOptix InSight iris recognitionsystem has been tested, certified andintegrated into Daon's identity assuranceplatform. AOptix has installed its InSightsystem at the Daon Demo Center in Reston,

VA as a part of a fully integrated irisinteroperability demonstration created byDaon. Users enroll their iris images on atraditional short-range iris system; an

identification application then controls theInSight to capture iris images forauthentication and performs the matchingfunction within DaonEngine.

    E-Signing and Check Fraud Prevention

Billed as "one of the major IT-trends of thelast two years handwritten signatures areembedded in more and more digital workflowsto guarantee authenticity. Combining the

benefits of biometric signatures andcryptographic techniques is becoming moreand more extensive. In 2009 the European ITsecurity association TeleTrusT awarded itsinnovation award for best practice in appliedelectronic signatures to Softpro-customer CECA- the Spanish Savings Banks Organization(Confederacin Espaola de Cajas de Ahorros)for the use of SignPads for digitizing of handwritten signatures in Spanish savingsbanks. In 2010 Softpro presents this solutionas "best practice" at the leading IT-event for

the financial industry in the Gulf region -MEFTEC in Bahrain from April 20 -21.

    Biometric Dos and Don'ts

Experts practical advice, published in CIO, listbiometric dos and don'ts that include using amulti-modal process. The experts saybiometrics solutions will increasingly employmore than one mode, which is more accurateand secure. For instance, using keystrokerecognition in conjunction with facerecognition, to evaluate subjects against awatch list, and iris recognition to perform one-to-one authentication.

Biometric Can Limit but not EliminateID Theft

Although biometrics will limit identity theft itwill not be a cure all for all that ails it. Whilebiometric identification is more and morevigorous, realities mean the use of false traveldocuments will endure, Frank Gregory,Professor of European Security at Britain's

    Southampton University, said. Developers of

biometrics, the computerized recognition of features such as fingerprints, irises and facesbeing introduced by rich countries, andfraudsters are in a unending competition to getahead of one another's technology. The needto keep travelers moving in an age of masstransit meant there was a trade-off betweenpassenger "flow" and the personal attention aborder control officer could give to a singlecase.

MIT Draws Object Recognition Systems Framework

MIT research uses information about howfrequently objects are seen together toimprove the conclusions of object recognitionsystems. At present, computers cannotconsistently recognize the objects in digitalimages. Now, Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers have discovered amethod to advance object recognition systemsby using information about context.

A typical object recognition system will scan adigital image for groups of pixels that differfrom those around them; those pixels coulddefine an edge, a corner or some other featureof an object. If the MIT system thinks it isidentified a chair, for instance, it becomesmore confident that the rectangular thingnearby is a table.

    FBI's Future Use of BiometricTechnology

The FBI likes technology dating back for manydecades but its future promises to be not onlyhigh-tech but biometrically infused as well.

Among some of the more interesting itemscoming down the pike: coordinating currentFBI biometric systems-such as our systems forfingerprints and DNA-and exploring newbiometric technologies that can be turned intousable tools for law enforcement andintelligence agencies; ensuring interoperabilitybetween fbi biometric systems and otherfederal, state, and international biometricsystems; and developing biometric training forour law enforcement and intelligence partners, establishing biometric standards, and certifyingbiometric products.

    Neuromarketers Go Inside Buyers'Brains

    Neuromarketingmethods are

making headlinesfor big business.Frito-Lay studiedwomen's brains tohelp develop anad campaign, andCampbell Soup

(CPB, Fortune 500) just unveiled a packagingredesign based on consumers' "neurologicaland bodily responses" to different mockups. Byhooking customers up to EEG or MRImachines, a company can learn about what's

really going on inside a buyer's brain --

possibly even before the buyer knows it. Thebad news is the technology is not cheap. firmsperforming neuromarketing research typicallyhave ad budgets of $30 million to $100 million.Help may be on the way for smaller companiessicne Companies testing a product ormarketing campaign using biometrics typicallyonly have to test a tenth of the people they'dsurvey in a standard focus group according toresearchers.

Training for a Manned Mission to Mars

Mars 500, a test that will begin in the middleof this year in Moscow, inside a warehouse onthe campus of the Russian Institute for

Biomedical Problems. There, a crew of sevenmen (three Europeans, three Russiancosmonauts in training, and one Chinese) willlock themselves inside a series of rooms nobigger than a tiny house for 520 days -- theapproximate amount of time a trip to Marswould take, with a 30-day layover on theplanet. If they last, each crew member will geta bounty, possibly upwards of $100,000. Mostof the trials will study the crew membersthemselves, through questionnaires, fitnesstests, detailed biometrics, and daily blood andurine tests.

Senators push Obama for BiometricNational ID card

Two U.S. senators met with President Obamaon Thursday to push for a national ID cardwith biometric information such as afingerprint, hand scan, or iris scan that allemployers would be required to verify. In anopinion article published in Friday's edition of the Washington Post, Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.)

and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) say the newidentification cards will "ensure that illegalworkers cannot get jobs" and "dramaticallydecrease illegal immigration." Schumer andGraham pitched the idea to President Obamaduring a private meeting Thursday at theWhite House. Graham said afterward thatObama "welcomed" their proposal for a newID card law; the White House said in astatement that the senators' plan was"promising."

Biometric details of Census 2011 to besynchronized with UIDAI

New Delhi Census 2011, for whichcanvassing and house-listing will begin this

April, will capture the biometric details (face, iris and ten finger prints) of every citizen overthe age of 15, so that they can also beassigned unique IDs by the UniqueIdentification Authority of India (UIDAI). Thehome ministry and the Registrar General of India (RGI) have agreed to synchronized the

details that are to be captured in the National

Population Registrar (NPR) being created withthe upcoming Census with the UIDAIsbiometric standards that were unveiledrecently. In line with the recommendations of the Biometric Committee under the UIDAI, theNPR, will have details of face, iris and tenfingerprints as a necessary requirement forregistration of residents. This is in order tohave a common identification standard as theUID has an agreement to synchronized thedata feeds of the NPR into its data base.

Biometrics: Hollywood Hype or RealWorld Security Solution?

Traditionally, biometrics has been the stuff of fantasy. Hollywood films often use it to showthe evils of automation. For some, it conjuresup images of clandestine organizations andcovert activities. In theory, biometrics is agreat way to authenticate computer users thatprovides a great, additional layer of security. Its impossible to lose your fingerprint (barringthe most gruesome of developments), and youcant forget it like you could a password. Inpractice, though, there are so many thingsthat, for now, limit the more widespread use of this technology.

Some Palm Beach County schooldistrict employees frustrated withfingerprint time-keeping

At 5:45 a.m. every workday, Pauline Cochranarrives at a school bus compound near WestPalm Beach, places her thumb on a machinethat looks like an oversized calculator andwaits for it to recognize who she is. That rarelyhappens smoothly, she says. "Those timeclocks are always breaking down," saidCochran, a bus aide for the Palm Beach CountySchool District. She's one of about 15,000hourly district employees who mustelectronically punch in and out of work usingtheir fingerprints as part of a $2.5 millionproject that has seen its share of glitches. When the biometric "time collection device"doesn't work, the scanner either does nothingor tells Cochran to see a supervisor or punch inher employee identification number.
