NEWS AROUND NORTHWOOD
Deadline is February 28 for hardship transfer applications
Applications are available beginning January 1 for parents who wish to apply for a 2019-20 hardship
transfer or to renew a current hardship to another Fulton County Schools (FCS) elementary, middle or
high school. Parents will use an online form, available through the school system’s website, to enter and
submit their information. Hard copy applications are not required this year, with the exception of medical
transfers which require pertinent medical provider’s signatures and documentation. The deadline for
submitting a transfer application is February 28, 2019, by 4:30 p.m., with no exceptions or extensions
granted. All requests must be received or postmarked by this date and time. Please note, all school
system employees who have children receiving an employee hardship transfer must renew their request
also. The February 28 deadline applies to students and parents seeking a hardship transfer for medical
reasons, curriculum differences, and child care situations or for employees’ children. Schools participating
in open enrollment, a separate transfer process that allows students to move to a school with available
space, will be announced in early May.
Parents with questions or who need more information about hardship transfers can contact the Fulton
County Schools’ Student Assignment Office at 470-254-5550 or visit their webpage here:

The fourth graders have been learning and loving the current unit on Westward Expansion by way of a PBL (Project Based Learning) opportunity where they are writing skits and participating in a role play. This change of pace adds variety to their education by adding an imaginative way of learning that expands the focus to include the whole child. The students are immersing themselves in this powerful era as they work to understand the belief of Manifest Destiny. They will become masters of the unit material that includes such events as the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the War of 1812, the Gold Rush and the Battle of the Alamo. The students are growing their self-confidence as they build on their social skills and creativity in preparation to perform for their classmates.
First Grade News
We are having a fantastic month in first grade! We cannot believe how much our first graders have grown
over the winter break.
Our first graders this month participated in a hands on in-house field trip with the GA Farm Bureau! We
learned about the importance of trees and keeping our environment from being changed by
humans. We also learned about materials that we use every day that come from trees.
In Social Studies, students have been learning about Theodore Roosevelt. Last week
students brought in teddy bears which are often thought to be named after Teddy Roosevelt.
Students participated in fun activities all day with the bears including creating math graphs with
class data, writing an opinion piece and creating a bear with important facts about Teddy
Roosevelt!
Students this week celebrated the 100th day of school by testing the age-old question: how
many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll? Students made predictions if it would
be over 100 licks or under 100 licks and then tested their theories!
We are looking forward to all the learning and growth to come in the next few months and
are so proud of all of our first graders for their hard work this year!

The Northwood Kindergarten students celebrated the 100th day of School on Wednesday. Many students dressed up like they were 100 years old or they wore special 100th Day shirts. The students participated in many fun activities including special 100th Day snacks, counting to 100 in many different ways, playing new games, and writing about 100 things. On Thursday, the students celebrated the 101st day of Kindergarten by dressing up like Dalmatians. It was a fun week of celebrating these important kindergarten milestones.
