The Czech Republic lies in the heart of Europe. Prague, the capital, known as the Golden city or the City of a hundred spires, has been a popular city break destination for some time and is now emerging as a remarkable destination for Golf.

Top quality golf has a long tradition in Czech Republic. The first golf courses were open in the west of the country in the spa towns of Karlovy Vary in 1904 and in 1905 in Marianske Lazne. Since this time the Czech Republic has hosted many golfi ng events and in recent years the European Tour has returned. With a low number of Czech Golfers, it makes it a heaven for golf tourist.

Beyond West Bohemia, there is an increasing selection of championship courses around Prague; most of them within a 30 – 45 minute drive from the city centre. There are many other excellent courses in the North and South Moravia areas including Celadna the current Czech Republic host to the European Tour. All this, plus the beautiful countryside and many historical highlights will bring breadth and depth to any golfi ng break.

HOW TO GET THERE:The easiest way is to fly to the Prague airport. Direct flights to Prague are operated by major airlines and depart from most European airports. You may be surprised to learn that flight duration from London it is only 90 minutes.

WHEN:High golfing season is from April to October, however you can usually play both during late March and early November.

WHY:Prague as the country’s capital for more than 10 centuries is full of historic and cultural highlights such as the Prague castle – the biggest castle grounds in the world, seat of the kings and now the residing president, Charles Bridge or many of the museums and beautiful small cobblestone streets. It is also a great place to relax, go shopping or enjoy many restaurants, bars and excellent nightlife. Prague is also a great base from which to explore the rest of the beautiful countryside, castles and other historic places of the Czech Republic as well as the wonderful Czech hospitality.

WHERE:Prague lies in the centre of the Czech Republic with the Vltava River meandering through its heart. In the area of Prague there are more than ten attractive 18-hole courses, the majority within a 30-45 minute drive from the heart of the city. Worth mentioning for example is GC Karlstejn which has hosted the European PGA Tour and has stunning views over the 14th century Karlstejn castle.

This excellent course hosted the European PGA Golf Tour in 1997 and the Czech Open on numerous occasions. This biggest golf resort in the Czech Republic, which opened the fi rst 18 holes in 2002, is located only 40 km southeast of Prague. Beroun Golf Resort

Prague City Golf Club is the fi rst 18-hole golf course in Prague co-designed by Alex Cejka. It was conceived as a Championship course with ambitions of hosting professional tournaments of the highest level while still remaining playable for recreational golfers. The front nine holes, designated as the “Links Nine”, and the back nine holes, designated as the “Lakes Nine” provides an interesting variety of playing conditions. Albatross Golf Resort

Albatross Golf Resort is situated near the village Vysoký Újezd in the vicinity of Prague and easily accessible from the Prague airport, this 18-hole par-72 golf course was built with a vision to create the best golf course in the Czech Republic. Course rating – 72,2 and Slope rating – 133 from the yellow tees. Berovice Golf Club

A newly opened back-9 completes this fantastic 18-hole open links course in an area close to Prague. Each nine rises delightfully from both sides of the village valley. The course is both beautiful and diffi cult as fairways are relatively easy to fi nd but approach shots are at a premium because getting to and staying on the well-protected sloping greens is demanding. The fi rst-9 has more forgiving rough but the second-9 is fi lled with long fescue mounds and devilish water hazards which could have you screaming back to the clubhouse needing to buy more balls in order to fi nish the round!Practice facitity includes 9-hole course (Pitch and Putt) driving range, chipping green, putting green, lessons with Pro, restaurant, bar, golf shop, trolley rental, golf cart rental, golf equipment rental.

Benatky Golf Club

This championship 18-hole par-72 open-links style golf course (SOUDNY) is located north-east from Prague. You may be surprised to learn that the course was built on a former tank-training field of the Soviet army. Characterised by wrapped fairways, long distances between the holes, high rough, and a lot of water hazards the course is challenge from the very fi rst tee: par 5, with a huge 500 m from the yellow and 426m from the red tees. Better then most Czech courses we have a beautiful cascade of small lakes, which is a huge challenge near a few holes. Golf Mlada Boleslav with an 18-hole Championship Course (SAND MARTIN’S HOLES) and a 9-hole Academy is open for golfers and the general public seven days a week, throughout the year. Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) is a famous Czech spa town in West Bohemia. The original golf club and its 9-hole course was established in 1904. The current 18-hole championship course was built in 1935. This golf course is one of the oldest and the most beautiful in Central Europe, located in the magnifi cent setting of the Krusne hory mountain range, only 120 km west of Prague. The course hosted several international tournaments and the Czech Open many times. The new luxurious clubhouse opened in 1997 and offers exceptional facilities and service. MARIANSKE LAZNE ROYAL GC

The Royal Golf Club Marianske Lazne (Marienbad) is a beautiful mature 18-hole course set in the woodland grounds in the famous spa town west of Prague, not far from the borders of Germany. The course, that is the oldest in the Czech Republic, has been professionally designed and masterfully landscaped. The course, orginally opened in 1905 by His Majesty King Edward VII, offers a lot of challenging water and sand hazzards and as hosted the Czech Open several times as well as many European PGA Tour events. This new 18-hole golf course was designed by German architect Christopher Stadler and opened in May 2006. The altitude of the course is 430 m above sea level and it covers an area of about 100 ha. The difference between the highest and the lowest point of the course is 42 m, so expect to be challenged. The Sokolov golf course was built as an exemplary redevelopment project within this mining area. The slightly undulating course is suggestive of a Scottish links with its large greens, deep bunkers, wide fairways and windy conditions.
