What is media education?

universities with Journalism and Media programs (19 - 25 years)

elementary / secondary / high schools (6 - 19 years)

non-profit organizations, civic associations focused on informal education (all age groups)

Topics covered in a school curriculum:

media functions, media research, semiotics, digital media, social media, media history, visual culture, advertisement, practical skills (text, audio, video)

Elementary / secondary high schools

“media education” as a new subject in schools from 2007, independent or included in existing subjects, such as Czech language, social studies, informatics and arts

Informatics: how to find and evaluate information, dangerous aspects of internet

Czech: how to create newspapers, write articles and work in a team

Art: how to design a flyer, layout, take pictures and understand advertising

Adertising: watch commercials and study ads in newspapers. Analyze how it works, what the aim is and how to understand it

Media behind the scene: invite professionals from various media to explain the process of creating news, shows, articles and identify the professions

News: read the newspaper and recognize what is news and what is tabloid and what is the important message
