Task Force Employee Appreciation

2014 W.A. Brookshire Scholarship Banquet

The W. A. Brookshire Foundation awards college scholarships to family members of Ford, Bacon & Davis employees. On July 15, 2014, in Baton Rouge, a banquet at Sullivan’s Steakhouse was held in honor of seven college students receiving scholarships for the 2014-2015 school year. Sr. Vice President, Ray Sherman, hosted the banquet for the recipients and their guests. “It’s an honor to stand before each of these hard working individuals to present a Brookshire Scholarship to

them,” said Mr. Sherman. “Earning this scholarship was no easy task, and I commend each of them for their efforts.” Pictured are

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), exercises for older adults who want to stay healthy and independent, include strength exercises, balance exercises, stretching exercises and endurance exercises. Amr Elaguizy, Electrical Engineer in FB&D's West Monroe office, covers all of these exercises with his weekly water polo practice with the Dallas Water Polo Club, in Dallas, TX, and by exercising with the Masters Swim Team at Louisiana Tech in Ruston, LA, twice per week. As a young man growing up in Egypt, Amr became a member of the Egypt National Water Polo Team. Water polo is a team water sport, where two teams make an effort to score goals by throwing a ball into their opponents goal. This sport requires the participant to swim, tread water, throw, catch and shoot a ball using a single hand.

After graduating from English School in Egypt, Amr attended the University of Minnesota, where he played on the men's water polo team, for five years. He then took a long break from water polo while raising three kids, but picked it back up at the beginning of 2014, at the age of 65. "I love the competition that water polo provides. I've made great friends and it's a lot of fun," said Amr. This year alone, Amr has played competitively three times.

In June, Amr competed in the National Master Water Polo championship in Irvine, CA, where his team, the Ancient Mariners, won the gold medal in the 65+ age group. And in August, he participated in the Federation Internationale De Natation (FINA) Master Swim Championship, where he

competed in the 50, 400, and 800 meter free style. And just to stay

busy, he also competed in "Tri Rock", in Austin, TX, in September. This was a triathlon which included swimming for 700 meters, bicycling for 16.7 miles and running for 3.1 miles. Amr lives in Ruston, LA, with his wife. He

has three grown children who live in

Austin, TX. He has been with FB&D for

seven months.

Counter-Rotational Vane Flow Conditioner (CRV) While many people know that a minimum number of pipe diameters are usually required before a pump inlet, some people may not know there are technology options that, in some situations, can afford design opportunities even in constrained design systems. On a recent project, FB&D designed a material upgrade to a refinery system. Included in this project's scope

was suction line piping for an API centrifugal pump. This piping design utilized a counter-rotational vane placed one pipe diameter upstream from the inlet weld seam of a short-radius 90° elbow. This vane conditions the flow upstream of a piping turn entrance by rotating the fluid through the turn such that it exits the turn with a flat profile. The CRV® manipulates the flow

with zero attack angle and an aerodynamic shape such that it produces minimal pressure drop, if any, depending on the application, fluid properties and velocity. This flow conditioner (CRV®) was designed and manufactured by Cheng Fluids located in Mountain View, CA.

Florida, many interesting

personalities were in

attendance. The conference

(held Sept 3 – Sept 6), hosts

receptions, seminars,

401k by Ken Miller The most common

question that I’m asked is:

What funds should I put

my money in? This is called

asset allocation. With so

many fund choices

available, determining this

can be overwhelming. The

final answer will be either

conservative funds,

aggressive funds, or

somewhere in between,

depending on the amount

of risk you’re willing to

take, and the time horizon

until withdrawals. Here are

some questions you might

consider.

RISK

1. What are your

reasonable concerns

about inflation vs.

returns? Do you want

to modestly exceed

inflation or

significantly exceed

inflation?

2. How would you react

to a substantial

decline in the market?

Can you run the risk

and see it as a chance

to invest more at

lower market prices?

TIME HORIZON

1. What is your

investment goal? Is it a

comfortable

retirement, education

funding, and estate

planning, or other

short/long term goals?

2. Your time horizon is

the amount of time

you allow your

investments to grow,

which may be less

than 5 years, or up to

30 or more years.

What is yours?

3. How stable are all

your income sources,

and are they keeping

pace with inflation?

4. How long will your

savings last in the case

of personal financial

emergency?

5. Do you intend to

withdraw, or take

loans to pay for

non-retirement

expenses?

6. How much of your

monthly income do

you use to pay

installment debt

(auto loans, credit

cards, etc.?)

Risk and investment time

horizon are only two of the

considerations to take the

initial steps of a 401k

investing. Visit

www.401k.com for more

information.

Take a walk...New Orleans Style

P A G E 2 1 V O L U M E 1 , I S S U E 4

About 5 1/2 years ago, Sr. Design Lead in our New Orleans office, Stan Dimattia, agreed to work with a previous employer in New Orleans for six months. Having a small home in New Orleans on the street car line, and on the Mardi Gras parade route, he thought it would be a good idea. He embraced the New Orleans way of life. He rode the street car to and from the office every day, and enjoyed Wednesday music in Lafayette Park. Then he decided that he had to not only embrace the city, he had to play a part and experience the city. He realized that he didn't want to participate in riding in parades. "That is too much party," said Stan. He had friends who were members of "walking clubs" so he decided to join the Half-Fast Walking Club. Walking Clubs are not new to the city of New Orleans. The oldest group was founded in

1890. All of the walking clubs in New Orleans walk or dance on Mardi Gras day between parade floats, throwing beads and trinkets to the excited, awaiting crowd. The Half-Fast Walking Club was founded in 1961 by the music legend, Pete Fountain. Pete has recorded 100+ albums and has appeared on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson 59 times, and was on the Lawrence Welk Show for two years. "On Mardi Gras day, we meet at 5am for breakfast and cocktails at Commanders Palace Restaurant," said Stan. "The parade starts at 7am and about 250 male members of the walking club "march" alongside an open trolley car, where Pete Fountain rides, while his band plays continuous jazz music. We march for about six hours, on a twelve mile route, throwing beads, doubloons, and trinkets to the Mardi Gras crowd."

2009 was the last year the group wore costumes for the walk. Members now wear tuxedos. They've worn purple, yellow, red, green, and in 2015, they will wear blue tuxedos. Along the route, members, ages 25 to 80, take four 20 minute breaks at local taverns and restaurants who offer food and refreshments just for them. The group ends their day at the Hotel Monteleone, where they are greeted by their wives or girlfriends, along with an assortment of New Orleans cuisine. Stan now embraces the city.

His six month temporary

assignment has turned into a

permanent one. He has been

with FB&D for 2 1/2 years.

Task Force Jambalaya Cook-Off September 25, 2014, was a beautiful day for a jambalaya cook-off at the Baton Rouge Coursey office location. Five teams, each representing a design discipline, competed for the honor of having the best jambalaya. Some were meaty. Some were spicy, and some were extra spicy! But all of the jambalaya samples that were judged were delicious! Manager of Projects, Lee Harris, hosted the competition, making sure that everyone had a good time competing, but also making sure that everyone participated safely. "This is all about team building", said Lee, "and

no matter who wins today, we all win for having such a great team." Judging the contest for the best jambalaya were Ray Sherman, Sr. Vice President; Jason Riggs, Piping

Department Manager; Lee Harris, Manager of Projects and Deana Coreil, Marketing Assistant. All of the judges had a tough time identifying the best one. However, the Mechanical team, headed by Kyle Wooster, was finally selected as the cook-off winner.

FB&D Dow Task Force Sponsors Summer Interns

From June 2, through July 25th, 2014, Ford, Bacon & Davis' Baton Rouge office facilitated a summer internship, sponsored by the Dow Chemical Company, for two members of the High School for Engineering Professions (HSEP) at Scotlandville Magnet High School, in Baton Rouge, LA. Under the guidance of FB&D Mechanical Engineer Kyle Wooster, HSEP students, Courtney Taylor and Kiara Smith, performed work assignments with all project disciplines. They also witnessed the technical interaction between each of the disciplines, along with the responsibilities required for specific project deliverables. "The expectation of the program is to expose students to work

associated with various engineering disciplines impacting the petro-chemical industry," said Lee Harris, Manager of Projects of the Dow Task Force. "The summer intern program is a great opportunity for students to gain insight into the engineering field. We appreciate Dow's investment in our youth, and we're glad to have been able to play a part." Courtney and Kiara agreed that their experience working at FB&D provided them with "real life" concepts of each engineering discipline, which helped them with

their decision to pursue a degree in engineering. "Through their design work,
