Double Pitcher

Contests

Every team will be offered a space every edition of the Newsletter to submit something funny... write about their game... whatever...and since we’re doing a newsletter every Wednesday of every week, you have plenty of time to come up with something! If your team doesn’t submit anything, and isn’t in the newsletter, talk to your captain!

Ideas for Team Submissions When I say, submit something for your team, here are some ideas: • Play by plays of the game • Document the debauchery at the bar - i.e. describing someone’s amazing acting skills hobbling across the bar with a “sprained ankle” just to Ice a teammate. ] • Draw pictures!!!!! • Favorite quotes, poems, song lyrics, movie scripts, YouTube video, or motivational speeches! • Email chains from the morning after . • Funny pictures of you, your team, or something random on the internet • Give your team member awards - drunkest, loudest, person with the least shame, best off the face catch, etc.! • Anything. Really. Someone on your team is creative.

Submissions are due EVERY Tuesday by 7 p.m.

Backyard Sports Club’s email is

[email protected]. I look forward to working with all of you!

** If you need extra time, email me and just let me know.

DISCLAIMER: if you have problems with keeping your language in check, not bashing refs, being overly nasty to other teams, and other no-no’s, the Editor does have the right to not include your write up in the newsletter if the content is deemed inappropriate or out of line. We will try to screen write ups as they are received, will try to let teams know so that they have time to resubmit, but there is no guarantee. The easiest thing to do is to keep it clean, be nice, and remember this is all in good fun.

Ghent Winter Bar Tour Friday, February 22nd

READY! SET! CRAWL! Already the most charitable pub crawl in the nation, the Ghent Winter Bar Tour will try to outdo itself once again on Saturday, February 23rd as it hits the streets of midtown Norfolk for the biggest night out this winter, and it’s ONLY $20. As always, all proceeds from this event will benefit a fantastic organization making a big difference in our local community - Edmarc Hospice for Children! More than 1,000 participants helped make last winter's tour a raging success with $22,250 raised for charity and we expect even more good things this time around. Our largest annual pub crawl will journey once again down Colley Avenue, 21st Street, and the surrounding locale in the historic midtown Norfolk neighborhood of Ghent from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM (or whenever the last bar closes). All of the details on this grandest of charity pub crawls, including how to register for the event, are available through the links in the menu above. SOCIAL SPORTS ARE BACK!!! Our lives are complete again. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank BYSC for giving me a reason to leave my house in the dead of winter that doesn’t include work or Trader Joe’s for more $3 wine. And while it did take a lot of convincing initially, Shore Drive and the North End are pleased to announce that the far off land of “Chesapeake” (pronounced \ˈche-sə-ˌpēk, ˈches-ˌpēk\ in the local dialect) is not as much like Deliverance as we had once feared. Seemingly normal people live here…country bars even play the Wobble. It’s a magical place after all. Clown Babies started off strong this season – we actually had one person read the rules before the first game started. That’s not to say they were read correctly, but we’re rather impressed with ourselves anyway. Rings Around Uranus was a solid competitor striking fear and making Mickey drop balls with their Intimidation Pink (selling this trademark to Crayola), and while I wouldn’t recommend they yell their team cheer around small children…I do recommend stealing their strategy of enlisting small children to taunt competitors and monopolize ball running on the sidelines. Those kids had out-of-bounds balls on LOCKDOWN. It was quite brilliant. MVP status. We’d like to thank Snack Pack City for reffing our game, however, if SmoothOperator could be a little more serious next time, that’d be great. This is Adult Recreational Dodgeball…not some line dance you learned on a cruise. We need some intensity here. Please and thank you. Other than that…welcome to the cult known as CLOWN BABIES: Will, Jordan, Patrick, Dan, Dani, Jenny, and Lisa. Dance floor domination in store...we'll play dodgeball too.

Balls, Brannon

Team write-ups

Damn! If I had remembered we were doing a newsletter, I would've paid more attention! So here goes...we got curbstomped! Stranger Danger is back this year with a vengeance--they have a mix of players from a couple of different teams from last year and it totally makes a difference. My team was rusty from not playing since last season, but don't count us out yet! I think once we get our mojo back, we will be a team to be reckoned with. We are all definitely excited to be back on the turf, but most especially, we can't wait to hang out at Millions of Beers!

Team write-ups

New season, new team. Other than Nicole and Billie Joe, everyone was new to dodgeball. Although it showed in the first 4 games when the Silient Assassins were up 4-0, we started to gel as a team by the fifth game. We were taking out Brett, Robbie, and Baham at the beginning of each game. Nicole targeted Robbie 4 times! It seemed like Robyn was catching each dodgeball that went her way. We were able to catch up and once we had the lead in matches, we held onto it. It was a nail biter towards the end when we won the last match. The outcome was 7-6...Game Blouses. Any win against the Reyeseseses is a good win. Great game everyone!

- James Salgado

Not Your Average Joe's What makes a good dodgeball team? Athleticism? Dedication? Heart? Courage? Commitment? Cannons for arms? Well check, check check check check and check! What's our strategy you ask? Kill or be killed! This isn't your "everybody gets a trophy" elementary school dodgeball team! This is real life, in your face, slam balls down your throat DODGEBALL!!! We got the power of a Chris Brown backhand, the intimidation of Norman Schwarzkopf, moves like Patrick Swazey, circa his Chip-N-Dales tryout on SNL (You thought I was going to say moves like Jagger didn't you? Cliche much? You're an idiot if you did), the grace and style of Jabba the Hut and we're as cool Billy Dee Williams drinking a Colt .45. Our girls are so dedicated they will gladly take some balls to the face to save another teammate. Our guys take one for the team so often drunk college frat boys are jealous. We may not win a lot of games, no really we won't, but we'll complain tooth and nail about every player who gets out on our team and piss and moan every time a player on the opposing team should be out, even when they catch the ball. 15 people with one heart, one mind, one body and a lot balls. What else can you ask for? DO NOT answer that! Team motto: Dodge, Dip, Duck, Dive and get hit in the face with dodge balls! Right Nadia?

Finally some dodgeball action. We played Not Your Average Joe's in the 8:00 o'clock game. It was a tight battle from start to finish. There must of been 6 lead changes throughout the game. Sloppy was lead by Diana and Amy the gun slingers on the team. We cam out victorious over the Average Joe's. Two games in one night is a little brutal. My arm and body was not up for the task. We held our own for the first 6 games but then You're Killin Me Balls went on a long run, and Sloppy couldn't recover. It was a great game on both sides of the ball. Very few arguements and good play all-around.

- Jon Reyes

It was my first time at dodge ball and it wasn’t as scary as I thought. Yes, balls are flying at your face, but that’s just an ordinary Friday night for everyone! Plus, you can now get people out by hitting them in the face, that’s always fun! The player refs seemed to work out well for everyone (unless you had a ref who was chatting on the sidelines instead of paying attention), but I guess that’s why you have more than one ref. It didn’t take long for the other team to get a grasp on who the top players were on our team, and they became instant targets. It seemed that Brett and Robbie had a lot of balls flying their way, but that didn’t stop Robbie from taking out James to win a game for us. We may have lost but we played honestly and I am proud of that. It would’ve been easy for me to stay in when the ball barely touched my finger tips or slightly grazed my foot, but I knew I was out so I stepped out. Our team has some amazing ball catchers as well, lots of outs were made by Baham, Bryan, Keith, Caren, Noelle, and Jessika. Charm didn’t even let a little vertigo stop her! Looking forward to next Friday!

Team write-ups

Snack Pack City had a rough start as they entered their first game of dodgeball Friday night as rookies. They may have looked good with their hot logos but were getting thrown out left and right. We had girls hiding in the corners afraid to be hit with balls in the face. After a few games, we finally got the hang of it. Jeff Smooth Operator was zinging balls. We started to get the hang of it once Ben learned that he cannot dodge balls out of bounds and Josh learned that his big body is only helpful in lifting weights not dodging balls. The team came together like swirled pudding and we actually started to win games as we progressed. Little did we know how powerful our snack attack would be especially with the help of Mike Tyskowski & Chris Snyder. We ended up not only being victorious but started having fun accomplishing it. Remember that knowing is half the battle. A infamous G.I Joe Quote.

- Jen Price

Stranger Danger rocked it out with a win... Something we aren't used to from last season! We did what we do best and shit talked our way through it! But this time it was at each other instead of at the opposing team. We had a bit of a makeover, so you may not recognize us without the 10 ft monster, but it was time to retire the target! If you wanna party, we'll be the ones at MOB before every game playing skee ball and party rocking!

Team write-ups

Solid first week for YKMB. Honestly wasn't sure what to expect with a team made up of 1/3 old team, 1/3 other old team, and 1/3 rookies. Luckily it equaled 100% awesomness!!! Sloppy Seconds gave us a good run from the start. We were trading game for game for awhile. They seemed to have the same few girls at the end of each match and they were not to be taken for granted. After the first several games though our team got into a groove and took the lead and then started to pile a few more wins on. I will try to keep up our team superlative tradition that was done so well by last year's captain Erin . For the ladies I am giving Kathrin The "Enegizer Bunny Award" for her excitment and energy. She was ALL OVER THE PLACE!!! even over the center line and out of bound a few times:) For the gents I have to give Josiah or J.C. or Brandon (sorry couldn't tell which, I was chasing down a ball and just saw the play out of the corner of my eye) "The Tables Have Turned Award" for taking a 5 on 3 and turning it into a 2 on 3 by making a catch, throwing someone out, and making another catch all back to back to back. Finally I would like to add that the refs also did an incredible job, after some of the craziness that happened last year i wasn't sure what o expect , but I was really impressed. Thanks guys!

- El Capitan Shaun

This was the Pitches maiden voyage into dodgeball. We had modest expectations as only a handful of players had ever played before. We got off to a good start with a quick win. But Katy and Antonio's team came firing back quickly with 3 straight wins. And they never looked back. We were able to steal another pair of late wins but lost the game 7-3. We've definitely got a lot of learning to do on this crazy new sport but we were glad to be indoctrinated into the league by one of our favorite teams.

The Hookup Guys! She is seriously the cutest little thing I’ve ever met. She is itty bitty and can fit in your pocket. Some may know her as Shorty, but you can call her Ankle Biter, Small Fry, Kid…you know, something along those lines. She may be small, but she’s a feisty little girl. I’ve seen pictures of this girl wrestling girls 10x her size in JELLO..and she won! Hello?!?!? This girl wrestles in jello, I wonder what else she’ll wrestle in, just sayin! Another plus about Caren is she’s a massage therapist, and from what I’ve been hearing this girl’s REALLY good with her hands if ya know what I mean. So guys, ya better snatch (no pun intended) this girl up while she’s available. When you see her out at MOB, buy her a Miller Lite or perhaps a shot…body shot!

Congrats to Jamie Hopkins for winning the pitcher contest! Even when there isn’t dodgeball, we still have fun contests. Jamie, please do all of us a favor next time and PLEASE keep your pants on! Seriously! Gross! This image will forever haunt my dreams. Just sayin, have a good day, sir!

“ROLL DEEP”

The team who has the most teammates and friends at the bar will win the double pitcher contest. Make a Facebook invite, send out flyers…do whatever you have to, to get your team, friends, and/or family to Millions of Beers this Friday. We will do the final headcount at 10:30 pm.
