Manie de Beer, waited patiently at theBela Bela Magistrate court for attemptedmurder accused Trymore Munetsi andPetrus Sithole to arrive. Both Munetsi and Sithole pleaded not

guilty to the charges soon after theirarrival. When asked to testify, Groenewaldt

calmly approached the bench andrecalled the incidents on the morning ofthe alleged attack.“I woke up to the sound of a noise

which I heard nearby but did not get outof bed because I underwent a backoperation a few weeks before. SuddenlyI heard our dog, Sheba, bark loudly atsomething in the other room. I finallydecided to move out from our bedroomand investigated the situation”, she said.Groenewaldt said that she was

suddenly attacked by “two black figures”when she stepped outside the bedroom. She continued by saying that the

“figures” were two men who chased herin and around the bedroom, one ofwhom apparently hit her on the headwith the blunt side of what is said to bean axe.Her husband, de Beer, battled the men

in vain as he was reportedly struck downwith the alleged axe and restrained.According to Groenewaldt’s testimony,

three other men entered the room, oneof whom was wearing a mask, anddemanded that their money and anyfirearms be handed over. The state prosecutor asked if the

unmasked. When the masked manspoke I immediately recognised hisvoice and thought that it might beTrymore. I was reluctant to say anythingbecause I was afraid that they might killme if I could recognize him,” she said.Groenewaldt was asked if she knew

Munetsi to which she replied that he wasan employee of theirs for two years.Recollecting the events of the attack,

Groenewaldt continued by saying thatshe and de Beer were both restrainednear their bed with a nylon rope. The couple was reportedly locked

inside their home after the men left withseveral items.Groenewaldt continued by saying that

she dropped to her knees and asked deBeer to help her out of the restraints.Due to profuse bleeding from his head,

which de Beer suffered from being struck,Groenewaldt said that he was unable torestrain her as he could not see properly.Groenewaldt said that it was only when

she came across a Leatherman pocketknife from a nearby drawer that she wasable to free herself from her binds. She added that she crept through a

window and ran seeking for help. The defence attorney for both accused

asked whether or not she was certain thatthe masked man was indeed Munetsi. She replied that although his face could

not be seen, she was certain that it washim as she recognised his voice butdeduced that he wore the mask so that hecould not be indentified.Court was adjourned after Groenewaldt

submitted her testimony. At the time of going to press a date for the

Residents rush to contaminated oranges Andries van der Heyde

A heavy loaded truck carrying orangesoverturned on the R101 road betweenBela Bela and Modimole on Thursday,August 14.The accident occurred on a stretch of

road that is currently being repairedand a truck carrying cotton hadreportedly overturned on the very samespot the day before. It seems probable that the driver of

the orange-carrying truck drove tooclose to the side of the road and itswheels were lodged in the loose sand. The truck reportedly lost control and

overturned. No injuries were reported, but the area

where the accident occurred becamehazardous when the truck’s diesel tankstarted to leak. The spilt fuel contaminated most of

the carried load.It was reported that the truck was

apparently travelling from Tzaneen toDurban to export the oranges.Jaques Coetzee, a technician from

Zero Waste SA, a hazmat company inDelmas and his team arrived early onthe scene.

On Saturday 16 August no less thanten suspected rhino poachers wereapprehended in Vaalwater. One of the men was shot during the

incident and was taken to the FHOdendaal Hospital in Modimolle. Therest of the suspects were arrestedand remain in police custody inModimolle.Kassie Knoetze, head of

Welgevonden Private Game Reserve’ssecurity, said that some of thereserve’s field guides noticedsuspicious activity by seven peoplenext to one of the farm’s fences; thepeople were accompanied by a whiteNissan Hardbody vehicle. They decided to keep watching them

and decided to lay a trap to catchthem, should they enter the farmunlawfully.“In less than 15 minutes later four of

the suspected rhino poachers enteredWelgevonden and shortly after that ashootout started between them andthe field guides. In the incident oneperson was wounded and the other

three werearrested. Huntingweapons, axesas well as othertools used forrhino huntingwere found intheir procession,”said Knoetze.Knoetze said

that the Nissan vehicle was alsostopped in a roadblock just threekilometres from where it was originallyspotted and three other suspects werearrested.“We then started with intensive

interviewing techniques to find out whatthe suspects’ original plan was anddiscovered that there are more peopleinvolved as well as another vehicle thatwas supposed to transport the rhino hornto Pretoria,” said Knoetze.A joint operation between Quemic

security and the South African PoliceService in Vaalwater has made the arrestof three more people possible. A ToyotaConquest and more weapons wereconfiscated. “One of the suspects was a police

reservist from Hillbrow in Johannesburg,”explained Knoetze.Knoetze has been the head of security

at Welgevonden for three years and thiswill not be the first unsuccessful poachingattempt to be stopped in their tracks. Healso noticed that from all of the suspects, only one originated from Vaalwater. The rest of the crew is from

Rustenburg and Johannesburg.

“The accident happened just after twoo’clock. In most cases, truck driverstravel on alternative roads to avoidweighbridges. Most of them fall asleep, but this particular incident was merelyan accident, “he said. The owner of the oranges had given

Coetzee and his team permission toaccess the area and determinewhether or not the shipment had beenspoiled.Coetzee said that the damages will

likely be handled by the transportcompany and their insurer.Township residents gathered in

anticipation where they hoped to havesomething to take home. However the Hazmat-team and local

police were dispatched to keep an eyeon them, until the owner of the orangeswould provide further instructions.“Everything is under control and the

Bela-Bela police responded really fast, but we cannot be liable for the healthcare of residents who decide to eat thecontaminated oranges,” he said.He said fruit farmers use pesticides

that prolongs the shelf life of theirproducts when exported and is onlycleaned and cleared when shelved at

stores. He added that it poses a serious

health risk when people takeperishable and contaminated goodsfrom such an accident scene.Shortly after the owner had given

permission to Coetzee to remove thespoiled oranges and rehabilitate theroad, word spread quickly and manyresidents carried the oranges awaywithin minutes.“Despite policing, one cannot keep

such a mass of hungry people at bay,”said Coetzee. His team had recently also attended

to a fire involving a petrol truck near theKranskop toll gate. The contractor, Fantique Trade and

the Limpopo Roads Agency, have beenworking on road repairs of the R101,between Bela Bela and Modimole, since the beginning of August. The contractor has laid out several

alternative routes along the road whilstbeing repaired, but in the past fewweeks, the roads have graduallycollapsed and became uneven becauseof daily traffic. At the time of going to press Fantique

did not reply to a request for comment.

Members of the Concerned Parents Fighting Against Drug Abuse (COPFADA)once again gathered and protested at the Bela Bela Magistrate’s Court gates onTuesday, 19 August to express their concerns about the issue of nyaope dealingand usage in the area. Their protest was a sequel to court appearances of analleged well-known drug dealer Mahlatse Aphiri, who was arrested in December2012 and was recently given bail. Aphiri was appearing alongside his father, whowas arrested in 2013. Photo: Lizzy Bapela

Photo of the weekThe FactThe fact of God’s existence is soconspicuous, both throughcreation and through man’sconscience, that the Bible callsthe atheist a “fool” (Psalm 14:1).Accordingly, the Bible neverattempts to prove the existenceof God; rather, it assumes Hisexistence from the very beginning(Genesis 1:1). What the Bibledoes is reveal the nature, character, and work of God.The DefinitionThinking correctly about God is ofutmost importance because afalse idea about God is idolatry. In Psalm 50:21, God reproves thewicked man with this accusation:“You thought I was altogether likeyou.” To start with, a goodsummary definition of God is “theSupreme Being; the Creator andRuler of all that is; the Self-existent One who is perfect inpower, goodness, and wisdom.”His NatureWe know certain things to be trueof God for one reason: in Hismercy He has condescended toreveal some of His qualities to us.God is spirit, by nature intangible(John 4:24). God is One, but Heexists as three Persons—Godthe Father, God the Son, and Godthe Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:16-17).God is infinite (1 Timothy 1:17),incomparable (2 Samuel 7:22),and unchanging (Malachi 3:6).God exists everywhere (Psalm139:7-12), knows everything(Psalm 147:5;Isaiah 40:28), andhas all power and authority(Ephesians 1;Revelation 19:6).His CharacterHere are some of God’scharacteristics as revealed in theBible: God is just (Acts 17:31),loving (Ephesians 2:4-5), truthful(John 14:6), and holy (1 John1:5). God shows compassion (2Corinthians 1:3), mercy (Romans9:15), and grace (Romans 5:17).God judges sin (Psalm 5:5) butalso offers forgiveness (Psalm130:4).A Relationship with HimIn the Person of the Son, Godbecame incarnate (John 1:14).The Son of God became the Sonof Man and is therefore the“bridge” between God and man(John 14:6;1 Timothy 2:5). It isonly through the Son that we canhave forgiveness of sins(Ephesians 1:7), reconciliationwith God (John 15:15;Romans5:10), and eternal salvation (2Timothy 2:10). In Jesus Christ “allthe fullness of the Deity lives inbodily form” (Colossians 2:9). So,to really know who God is, all wehave to do is look at Jesus.Source: GotQuestions.org

Who is God?Live CuriousIn this week’s edition of The BEATour readers are faced with a rathercurious front page article. At first glance it seems excusableto have images of someone risingfrom the grave. How can this be? What happened

to this individual before being“resurrected”?As you may have discovered that

no actual resurrection had takenplace and a perfectly logicalexplanation of these events wereunfolded. However, the streets and our office

were filled with ideas, theories andgobsmacked guesses about whatactually happened before therevelation. Some indulged in theories from

beyond the grave whilst others tookit as a simple case of misplacedidentity. The latter was to be the inevitable

conclusion. The reason behind all the hubbub

guessing, is simple; It is plainhuman nature to be curious aboutthe inexplicable, the weird and thedownright absurd.Simply put, a curious mind is a

healthy mind.Think about it, the more you

discover, the more you learn andthe more you know.If the first caveman did not venture

out and toss around a round flatstone, the invention of the wheelmight never occurred. The same can be said about

electricity, the telephone an even icecream: delightful and delectableinventions that were discovered in alittle adventure and a spark ofcuriosity.Man has always been curious

about many things that still needanswers. Some for our benefit and others

just to have mere clarity about ourorigins.Given the fact that man has

developed and evolved, bothtechnologically and scientifically, bythe mere exploration of a curiousmind it remains vital that weencourage the trend of curiosity forfuture generations.Ponder about the world you live in

and question everythingunanswered.Read, investigate and explore.Who knows? One day we will

know more.

Media personnel and communicatorsfrom various publications, governmentand non-governmental institutions fromacross the Waterberg gathered at ThePark Hotel in Mokopane on Thursday 14August.The reason behind the mass gathering

was for a workshop on Maternal andChild Health (MCH) issues. The RMCH (Reducing Maternal and

Child Mortality), Johns Hopkins Healthand Education in South Africa (JHHESA)

the Mail and Guardian newspaper andthe Bhekisisa project co-hosted theworkshop, which was aimed atstrengthening media reporting inWaterberg on the said issues. In particular, the media briefing explored

issues such as promotion of exclusivebreastfeeding as a means to preventmalnutrition amongst children;addressing teenage pregnancy throughpromoting the uptake of dual protection. The promotion of delaying sexual

activity and increasing the uptake ofearly antenatal bookings throughpromoting male involvement in ANCclinics was also discussed. The Reduction of Maternal and Child

Mortality in South Africa throughStrengthening Primary Health Care(RMCH) project manager ,Thulani Grey, said that inputs and contributions fromthe workshop will ultimately lead to thereduction in the incidence of teenagepregnancy, enhance family planning andcontraceptive options in addition toincrease early antenatal pregnancybookings at clinics through increasingmale involvement in Waterberg. The media briefing comprised of content

sessions where experts unpacked theissues confronting the districts andexamine the social and scientific issuesrelated to the topics. Case studies werepresented through which the experiencesof clients were narrated with an exampleof a woman who was presented late atan antenatal clinic or a man who

accompanied his partner to the antenatalclinic.Experienced journalists from the

Bhekisisa Centre facilitated the sessionwith tips on reporting on MCH.The Programme was funded by the

United Kingdom’s Department forInternational Development (DFID) hasbeen designed in close collaborationwith national authorities in South Africaand supports national priorities in thehealthcare sector.“The aim of the RMCH Programme is to

improve the quality of, and access toreproductive, maternal and child healthservices in targeted districts of SouthAfrica. The main beneficiaries of the

programme are women and childrenliving in poorer, underserved parts ofSouth Africa,” said Grey.He further said that the JHHESA has

been contracted by the RMCH to supportthe demand for the creation of maternaland child health services in threeselected districts namely; Limpopo’sWaterberg, Gauteng’s Erkhululeni andthe Central Karoo in the Western Cape.Grey indicated that one of the key

activities highlighted in all three districtsis the importance of partnerships withthe local media as a means to increasethe knowledge of the local population onthe key issues identified throughensuring more informed reporting onmaternal and child health issues in thedistricts.

spokesperson Matome Sebelebele, thedeal states that all ratepayers settling50% of their current accounts and theirmunicipal accounts of more than twomonths will have 50% of their debtwritten off.The mayor said that this is mainly to

encourage ratepayers, to start on aclean slate.“It is important for us as the new

political leadership of the municipality toget the institution on a clean slate suchthat we built confidence and arelationship of trust. The deal is aimed atensuring that community members areable to rearrange their consumption ofwater and electricity according to theirmeans and household income. Thereason for this is to avoid falling intodebt, which will result in a cut off fromthe municipal network supply. The dealwill run until the end of December 2014,”he said.Nhlapo has also called on all needy

Ramalekana explained that the boardsare placed at institutions that support theinitiative and a committee is elected toraise awareness on issues relating tosubstance abuse and social crimes.“We are taking the fight against

substance abuse very seriously. Thereare many cases that have been reportedwhere drug users prey on innocentvictims like those at the Reamogetswedisability centre. We have receivedreports where these users would go as faras to test substances on the disabledwithout their knowledge. We havetherefore decided to take serious actionand raise awareness against the growingtrend of drug use and the social crimesassociated with it,” he said.Ramalekana said that Light of Africa will

be meeting with the MEC for theDepartment of health and socialdevelopment, Joyce Mashamba, onThursday 28 August to discuss the natureof social crimes in their area.“We will be discussing ways in which we

can combat substance abuse andirresponsible drinking within ourcommunity. Issues such as teenagers whospend time at taverns as well as tavernsthat operate until the early morning hourswill be brought to the table. We will alsopropose that police visibility should beincreased during these times,” he said.Recreational facilities will be on the table

for discussion with the MEC asRamalekana feels that there is somewhatof an imbalance.“There are very few sports and

recreational facilities for our youngsters. As an example you will find three or fourtaverns in an area with only one facility forthe youth. We see this as somewhat of animbalance and something that must beaddressed with the MEC,” he said.
