to push a little harder and improveeven more. We have to have animproved standard of education andlooked up to those countries withgreat passing percentages. With thegreat pass rate, our country can bebetter,” Hine said. The EFF says that passing matric is

a milestone in a young person’s lifeand all must know that the NSC isnot enough. The party states thatfurther education and training isimportant for both the country andthe individual’s development. The party calls on all fighters,

particularly those who have beenthrough matric, from ward andcentral command teams toinstitutions of higher learning andtraining to take out time and helpstudents find space to further theireducation. They say that this mustinclude identifying funding, institutions of learning and offeringhelp with regards to the filling offorms. The EFF’s national command team

says that in as much as South Africadoes not have enough places for allwho passed, no one must be foundwith a matric certificate without anopportunity to further their studies. The party’s national spokespersonMbuyiseni Ndlozi said that if needsbe, even international institutionsabroad must be considered asdestinations for young people whoshould further their studies.“In time, and through the EFF’s

radical economic emancipationprogram, the party shall once and forall resolve the predicament ofshortage of spaces and funding forquality higher education and training. The programme will provide freequality education and lead to theexpansion of higher educationinstitutions. All fighters in wards, universities and FET’s must go outand help the students to find anopportunity to further their studies. There is no benefiting fromeconomic emancipation withoutfurther education and training,” saidNdlozi.

Farming rabbits has becomeincreasingly popular in South Africa forseveral reasons. The reasons for thatinclude that they can be kept in a smallspace, are cheap to raise, can eatalmost anything and produce high-quality protein. Rabbits — and theirmeat — can also be sold to make a bitof extra money.Making a rabbit cage is fairly simple

— all you’ll need scrap wood or wiremesh. It should be supported by polesor placed on tyres or bricks to lift it offthe ground (otherwise your rabbits willburrow out of the cage and escape!)The cage should have a wire mesh

floor with holes large enough for thedroppings to fall through (the holes inthe mesh should not, however, be bigenough to allow the rabbits’ feet to get

principles are still relevant, otherelements related to sustainabledevelopment and variousgreening interventions have beenadded. The GMC focuses alsoon efforts to get municipalities tobe central to the green economy.Selokela said that the R200 000

prize awarded to MogalakwenaMunicipality will be utilized forprojects that promoteenvironmental related projectsand Green Economy initiatives. He said that they hope to win thecoming national awards, with aR3.5 million cash prize, whichwould be channeled to othergreen projects.Municipal Manager Willam

Kekana said that everyone hasthe right to an environment that isnot harmful to their health or well-being. He added that theenvironment should always beprotected, for the benefit ofpresent and future generations, through reasonable legislativeand other measures that preventpollution and ecologicaldegradation, promoteconservation and secureecologically sustainabledevelopment.Community Services Manager

Merriam Molala said that winningthe prize while competing withthe best municipalities such asThulamela, Polokwane, EphraimMogale and Greater Tzaneenshows that Mogalakwena isheading in the right direction andthat their passion is green.Greater Tzaneen won the GMC

since 2008 until 2011.“This achievement is a clear

indication that the systems andstrategies that our municipalityhas employed when it comes toenvironmental management andgreening initiatives are beginningto yield fruits,” said CouncillorStaff Tsebe, Mogalakwena’sExecutive Council CommitteeMember responsible forCommunity Services.According to Mayor Tlhalefi

Mashamaite, the latest accoladethat the municipality has receivedis due to the dedicated efforts ofvarious departments within themunicipality, which include WasteManagement Services, Healthand Social Services, Water andSanitation and so forth.“We are very pleased to have

successfully reached the finalstages of the GMC, though therewere some delays in assessingus for the National GreenestMunicipality Competition. Wewere told that the assessment willcommence in January,” saidMashamaite. The department of

Environmental Affairs’ criteria forassessment includes good wastemanagement plans, policies andstrategies; institutionalarrangements and politicalsupport within municipalities onenvironmental programmes;greening initiatives includinglandscaping and planting of treesand community involvement onenvironmental projects andprogrammes.

Keeping rabbits for foodstuck). The droppings make anexcellent fertilizer for vegetable patchesor flower gardens.Medium-sized rabbits can be kept in

cages of 80x60x60 cm, one to a cage.If you use wood, you should put wire

mesh on the inside of the frame to keepthe rabbits from gnawing through it.If your rabbits are breeding, the mother

rabbit will need a nesting box to keepher babies warm. This box should beabout 38x25x25cm. Rabbit cagesshould be kept clean and dry to preventdisease, and protected from sun, windand rain. They can tolerate cold betterthan heat. It’s recommended to have their cage

be well-ventilated as they need plenty offresh air, and also that they be kept

away from dogs, cats and rats.Rabbits will eat almost anything that

grows in the soil, including Lucerne, carrots, green maize leaves, carrots, turnips, cabbage (but not too muchcabbage!) and lettuce. Don’t feedbreeding females cabbage as it canlower milk production. Some things, however, are poisonous to rabbits, such as potatoes and tomato leaves, and they don’t respond well to suddenchanges to diet. They should alsohave access to clean water at alltimes, and should be fed early in themorning and late in the afternoon. Most of the food should be given latein the afternoon. If you buy rabbits tofarm with, make sure that you buyhealthy rabbits with bright eyes, drynoses and clean ears and feet. Theideal rabbit’s fur should be smoothand clean and its teeth straight. Longtoenails indicate that the rabbit is older. This is just a basic guide to the care

and feeding of rabbits. If you want tolearn more, there are excellentsources of information on the Internetor in a local library.

CoGHSTA talks municipality’s situationwhile the situation is volatile theDepartment is enjoined to act withinthe parameters of the law in anendeavour to intervene atMogalakwena Municipality. He further said that the department

He added that this is done inthe interest of MogalakwenaMunicipality’s residents to continueto receive proper and betterservices.By the time of going to press,

January has come round again, andwith it the usual round of NewYears’ Resolutions (which we neverkeep as well as we should), as wellas the hope for the bright new year.2014 is just a baby, as years go,

only ten days old by the time youread this. There hasn’t been muchchance for anything to go wrong yet(although of course some thingshave gone wrong, as that’s thenature of life) and no telling whatthe year might hold. Will this be the year when you

write your matric exams? Will it bethe year your child attends his firstschool? Will it be the year whenyou finally enroll for those classesyou’ve been meaning to attend forso long? Will it be the year when you lose

the 20kgs you desperately need toget rid of, or when you find truelove? Will you get married this year,or engaged, or pregnant (or allthree)? Will 2014 be the year that you

start university, or leave universitywith a degree? Will it be the yearwhen you finally start on the careerof your dreams? Will you get sick, or recover from

a long illness this year? Is 2014going to be the year your cancergoes into remission? Will you be born in 2014? Will you

die this year?Let me tell you a secret, dear

reader. Nobody knows. Nobody cantell the future, nobody can tell youfor sure what the new year willbring. You can’t tell what challenges and

opportunities will come on yourpath this year, or what they will looklike. There may be hardship, orthere may be good fortune in yourfuture. But just as you can’t tell from a

baby’s face what it’s life story willbe, you can’t tell in January whatwill have happened by December or,for that matter, who you will be bythen. My challenge for you this year is

to take 2014 in both hands. Graspevery opportunity that comes yourway, and do your very best toovercome any challenge. Take thechance, make the change. Dance,as the man said, the dance of life.Dance it with enthusiasm, live everyday as if it may be your last(because you never know whattomorrow may bring, and for someof us, tomorrow may never come).Make your only New Years’

Resolution that, by the end of 2014,you will be the best version ofyourself that you can possibly be.

…And a happynew year!

Christian Priorities Bishop Silas Tlou

One of the most demanding andfrequently ignored admonitionsfrom Jesus Christ is found in hisrenowned Sermon on the Mount:“You are to seek first the kingdomof God and his righteousness, andall of these things will be added toyou” (Matthew 6:33). This is oneof the most vital, and yetneglected, mandates of Christ—even by many who profess to behis loyal followers. The first consideration, of course,

is the identity of the one makingthis demand. Does he have theright to issue such a rigorousobligation? If this is notunderstood, nothing productive willever result. The following factorsmust be appreciated: Christ isyour Creator (John 1:1-3; Hebrews1:3), he is your Savior (Matthew1:21), and he has been grantedauthority over you (John 17:2;Matthew 28:18). He thus has theright to command you and expectyour obedience. If you do notacknowledge this truth, there is noway you can legitimately claim tobe his disciple. Additionally, thereare the following constituentelements of the command.“Seek”—The verb “seek” (zeteo –

117 times in the New Testament)is a verb in the command mood, and it stresses continuousactivity. The word embracesseveral thoughts, such as “lookingfor,” “investigating,” “striving toobtain.” It embodies the idea ofstrenuous effort. Christians are notto prioritize their own interests, but those of their Lord foremost(Philippians 2:21).“First”—This adjective is

employed adverbially toemphasize precedence. Itsignifies degree, as: “in the firstplace,” “above all,” “especially.” Itis the very opposite of thedisposition of the man who soughtto follow Christ, but said: “First, letme go and bury my father”(Matthew 8:21). Jesusadmonished the man; notbecause the man cared for hisfather, but because he did notappreciate the preeminence of hisLord. Legions are of the samecaliber.“Kingdom of God”—The

expression “kingdom of God,” inthe sense of this context, is the“reign” of God in your life. Is heenthroned in your heart so thatyour entire existence is governedby his rule? The Creator of theuniverse will not be a mereappendage in your life. He is not asometimes, weekend, casualpoint of interest.“And His Righteousness”—The

term “righteousness” signifiesliving the way God wants you to; itis similar to Jesus’ proclamationto John the Baptist at the time ofhis baptism: “[I]t becomes us tofulfill all righteousness” (Matthew3:15).

It was a high counsel that I once heardgiven to a young person, “Always dowhat you are afraid to do.”Ralph Waldo Emerson

Responsible father figures mustinstil the values of human dignity, equality and respect in young menand boys,” said Mogotlane. She indicated that schools also

can play an important role.Learners must be engaged at anearly age and parents must take anactive role and teach their childrensocietal values. Mogotlane calledon everyone to play their part andprevent violence against women, children and people withdisabilities. She said that nowoman, man or child should bebeaten, raped, stabbed, shot at orattacked in any manner anywherein the country. She encouraged communities to

work together with the authorities toensure that these criminals arearrested and convicted.“Irresponsible parents or guardians
