Isaac C. L. Wood

Isaac C. L Wood was born on February 7, 1944, to the late Isaac Wood and Elsie Johnson Wood in Richmond, VA. His father passed when Isaac was five years. Isaac was raised by his mother Elsie with help from his Grandfather, Aunts and Uncles in Ameila County and Charlottesville, VA. As he grew into adolescence Isaac was affectionately called “Stick” within the community. Isaac was preceded in death by two devoted first cousins, Fetus Jackson, Charlottesville, VA and Ardel “A.C” Johnson, Jetersville, VA .

Isaac served his country by joining the United States Army on June 28, 1962. He completed military assignments in Korea, Indochina, Presidio of Monterey, CA, Fort Monmouth, NJ, Panama Canal Zone, Fort Gordon, GA, and Manheim, Germany. One of his most memorable military assignments was servicing on the security communications team during the Ronald Regan Presidential Campaign in the 80s. It was in the United States Army “Ike” developed a strong comradery with other servicemen that he kept in touch with throughout the years. During his 20 year military career, Isaac was awarded several decorations, medals and badges including:

- National Defense Medal- Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal- Basic Missileman Badge- Good Conduct Medal - Sharpshooter (Rifle)- Army Commendation Medal- Army Service Ribbon- Overseas Service Ribbon - NCO Professional Development Ribbon - Joint Service Commendation Medal- Meritorious Service Medal

After retiring from the military, Isaac earned a Bachelor of Science at Paine College, Augusta, GA. Isaac continued his technical career working for DuPont / Westinghouse for 20 plus years at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina. In January 1966, Isaac was transferred to Fort Gordon, GA. He told his “Aunt” Helen Fuller that he wanted to meet a nice young lady. Well as the story goes, Mrs. Fuller then called Bertha Jones and asked could she bring Isaac over to meet Audrey. As was customary young ladies entertained their guest in the living room while parents and other adults held conversation in another room of the house. Only laughter could be heard from the living room (the name Isaac means he laughs). Needless to say, the two of them hit it off and were married six weeks later March 1966 at her parent’s home on Earl Street. To this union two children were born Isaac Xavier and Tiffany. Isaac and Audrey celebrated 48 years of marriage.

At an early age Isaac accepted Christ at Zion Hill Presbyterian Church in Ameila County, VA. He later joined Elim Baptist Church and was baptized by the late Reverend R. L. Boyd. Throughout the years, Isaac served in the church choir and in leadership roles on the Trustee, Youth, Sunday School and Deacons Ministries.

When it comes to music, Isaac sung in the school chorus and played the saxophone in the school band at Russell Grove High School, Ameila County, Virginia. He enjoyed playing the piano and shared his music often with family and friends. Isaac has been described as a gentle man with a big deep voice. He also shared his musical gifts singing in the bass section of the Augusta Chorale for many years.

Isaac leaves to cherish his memory: a devoted wife Dr. Audrey Jones Wood; one son, Isaac

Xavier Wood of Nashville, TN; one daughter, Tiffany Wood of College Park, GA; an aunt, Helen Fuller; a mother-in-law Bertha K. Jones, and brother-in law, Willie Boykin Jones of Augusta, GA.

Being that Isaac was an only child, he nurtured and maintained sibling like family ties with his first cousins. His surviving paternal first cousins are Evelyn Jackson Watkins and Elizabeth Jackson Wynter. His maternal surviving first cousins are Yvette Fuller Merriweather, Eurious “Ralph” Johnson Sr., James “Jimmie” Johnson, Marion “Cookie” Rivers, Joseph “Joe Boy” Johnson and Catherine Johnson.

Additionally, Isaac is survived by: one niece, Dr. Judith “Judy” Jones, Augusta, GA ; one nephew, Boykin Broderick (Tanya) Jones and a host of other cousins, church family, neighbors and friends.

Audrey Remembers Isaac

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” - Romans 8:28

I never counted on falling in love in January of 1966. I thought that I would just meet someone new who was staying with his aunt while stationed at Ft. Gordon military base. The moment we were introduced, Isaac captured my heart, my spirit and my soul. At that point everything moved swiftly and with a purpose. On March 12, 1966, Isaac and I were married. His spirit possessed compassion, love, humbleness, honesty, dependability and a spiritual countenance which formed the foundation for a joyous union that spanned 48 years and that will joyfully sustain me through eternity.

Isaac was a blessing sent to me from God. Although I had known Isaac only for a short while, I trusted him and it seemed like we had known

each other all of our lives. Isaac was an easy person to live with. Nothing about him stressed or concerned me. Our relationship was pure bliss. When I traveled with Isaac, miles across the world, to Panama, Germany, other European and South American places, I was completely at peace, happy and trusting. I feared nothing and “homesick” was no where in my spirit. As long as I was with Isaac, nothing was an obstacle and everything was counted as “joy.” I felt safe, protected and never wanted for anything. Isaac supported and stood with me in all I attempted to do. I’m grateful. Isaac was a wonderful husband.

Our children, Xavier and Tiffany were blessed to have Isaac as their father. He loved them and provided the perfect role model for “Father, man of the house and head of the household.” Isaac nurtured our children through daily living in a loving, responsible and Christian environment. Our children looked forwarded to coming home from school each day and sitting to the table for the evening meal with their father and their mother. Our children were raised to love, respect, enjoy and appreciate traditional family values. Isaac set the pace for love, respect, fellowship, compassion, humbleness, generosity and responsibility in building and maintaining a good home environment for our family. One of his greatest joys was providing a college education for both of our children. Because of their father, our children were never shackled with the re-payment of college loans. Our children truly loved and respected their father. Because of their father’s teachings, our children were obedient to God’s command “Honor thy Father and thy Mother.” Isaac’s spirit will remain in my heart forever.
