Principal’s NewsParliament and Civics Education Rebate (PACER)Year 6 students recently undertook an education tour of our national capital. They were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of education programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributed funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards the cost. The rebate was paid directly to our school after the excursion.

School NewsDebating News
The Diamonds and Emeralds debated against Cammeray Public School this week in the third round of the Premier’s Debating Challenge. Both teams presented solid cases for their side of the argument. The Diamonds team were on the affirmative side, debating that “all parents should provide pets for their kids”. They won this debate. The Emeralds spoke for the affirmative side and lost by a narrow margin debating the topic that “we should ban make-up for all school aged kids”. Congratulations debaters and best of luck next round!

Waste Free Wednesday during July
Neutral Bay Public School invites you to participate in ‘Plastic Free July’. Plastic isn’t biodegradable, and once it is thrown away it leaches harmful chemicals into water and soil. Plastic, particularly plastic bags, pose threats to animals in all ecosystems. They can digest the plastic which is very harmful to them.
As part of our ‘Waste Free Wednesday’ program, we encourage everyday of July to be waste free.
Stars of the Week

A Team
Today was our first game after being moved up to the A division. We played Northbridge and with the help of our whole team, we won 26 – 10. Player of the Match was Cleo Walker (6P).
Written by team captain, Lucy Longworth (6K)
C1 Team
This week, Neutral Bay played Lane Cove. It was a close game with score of 3 – 2 our way at half time, but in the end, we unfortunately lost 10 – 8. Our passing was superb but we need to work on defending our players. The Player of the Match was Beatrice Bailey (5R) as she played amazingly the whole game.
Written by team captain, Angelina Kendall (6R)
C2 Team
This week we played Beauty Point. They had a phenomenal team with awesome passing and excellent communication. Unfortunately we lost 4 – 3. The Player of the Match was Naomi Peace (6R), who was always there to catch the ball. We had great communication and marking our players. Our next goal is to work on passing. Overall it was a great game.
Written by team captain, Georgia Alexander-Easaw (6S)
D1 Team
We played North Sydney. We won 15 – 3. We were really good at getting the ball to our shooting players. However, we need to work on intercepting the other team’s centre passes. We scored 5 goals in the first half and 10 in the second. Lucy Baird (6C) was chosen as Player of the Match because she shot lots of goals and was always ready to pass to. It was a very fun and entertaining game.
Written by team captain, Valentina Loon-Pangoni (5M)
D2 Team
Score! We already scored our first and it’s only 30 seconds into the game. We are on a roll! We are amazing at shooting, passing the ball, defending and communicating. We are really lucky to have fantastic shooters, defenders and attackers. We need to improve on sticking to our players and passing the ball. The final score was 12 nil to us. Player of the Match was Lulu Fargeat (5K).
Written by team captain, Claudia Stiertzel (5R)
Boys Team
The Boys played a great game this week. Our shooting was very impressive and our teamwork was exceptional. However, our passing was a bit rusty. Thankfully, Neutral Bay took home the victory 11 – 3. Player of the Match was Rory Edmondston (6R).

This Term Kindergarten has been learning about Living Things. As part of our unit we found out what plants need to grow and stay alive. We put our skills to the test and we grew some Hairy Heads! Can you recognise us?
Year 2 have been focussing on reading and writing procedures. In our English lessons we have been looking at the structure and elements of a procedure and in Science lessons, we have been exploring different mixtures. We worked together to write a whole class procedure that would teach others how to make a Lava Lamp. This would be a mixture of oil, water, Alka-Seltzer and food dye. We thought it would only be fair if we had a go at following our procedure and made our own Lava Lamps. We observed the bubbles in our lamps attach themselves to the blobs of coloured water float to the surface. When the bubbles popped, the colour blobs sunk back to the bottom of the bottle, and the whole thing started over until the Alka-Seltzer was used up.

Shrek practice
If you had arrived in any of the Grade 3 classrooms in the last week or two you would have seen the students undertaking one of the following endeavours:
Students have been learning how to locate fractions on a number line. Teachers got creative with making oversized number lines for students to interact with.
Another important focus in the creative arts program is the preparation for the Shrek Jnr musical. Classes across the grade are rehearsing their dances and songs. Kayleigh Wilke-Smith is working with classroom teachers to prepare students. Performing comes somewhat naturally to students and they are getting excited about costumes.
Grade 3 has been writing creatively all term. Teachers developed the student’s skills with many fun and creative writing tasks. Recently they wrote descriptively about the best part of themselves as a response to the book titled The Best Part of Me.
Teachers also pursued various artworks with students. 3C completed their still life artworks which included many skills of art making. All in all, a fun and busy term!

Stage 3 News (Years 5 & 6)This term Year 5 has been studying The Australian Colonies in History. In particular, we have developed our understanding of the reasons for the establishment of British colonies in Australia, the nature of convict or colonial presence and the role that a significant 19th century individual played in shaping a colony. In our studies we came across the infamous Ned Kelly. We were shocked to find out that no one actually knows when Ned Kelly was born and fascinated to learn that a film about Ned Kelly was the world’s first feature film.
We were a bit perplexed by his homemade helmet and so we started to investigate a little bit more about it. “How could a man wear such a heavy helmet whilst riding a horse?” Well, we found out that the helmet had holes punched in to the front, back and sides through which leather straps were strung, meaning most of the weight was felt on top of the Ned’s head, not his collar bone. Ned Kelly is also reported to have worn a woollen cap to pad his head!
As we studied Ned Kelly we came across Sidney Nolan’s 1946-47 collection. We loved his artworks and so we decided to recreate them through mixed media. We painted the background and then found black cardboard and brown paper bags for Ned and his horse. We are very proud of our creations!!
