Miss P Moir - 1P Class Teacher

We have had a very busy start to the school year. The Year Ones have settled in well into their new classes. All the teachers have reminded their classes of being respectful, responsible learners and always doing their best.

The 1P students are lucky to have their very own magical garden outside their classroom. We have had lots of fun getting familiar with all the different plants and fruits in the garden. We have even spotted a very hungry caterpillar munching on our red strawberries! Looking after our garden ties in well to our science topic this term of “School Yard Safari” which explores living things and different minibeast creatures that live in our environment.

All of the Year One teachers look forward to a very fun and busy term!

8Neutral Bay Public School - Term 1 Week 3

The Bay Times

P & C NewsWelcome from our P&C President – Sharmila SoorianHappy New Year to all the new & old families and a very warm welcome to a new exciting year at Neutral Bay Public School. The NBPS P&C Association has another busy and eventful year planned to support our School and the children. Perhaps you are able to assist in one of the many activities?

What is a P&C Association? A P&C Association is a school based organisation consisting of parents, teachers and citizens residing within the school drawing enrolment area. P&C Associations are established to:

• promote the interest of the school by bringing parents, citizens, students and teaching staff into close co-operation;

• assist in providing facilities and equipment for the school and promoting the recreation and welfare of the students at the school;

• encourage parent and community participation in curriculum and other education issues in schools; and

• assist and co-operate with teaching staff at public functions associated with the school.

What do we do?Over the years the P&C, together with the School, has been able to raise enough funds to see the implementation of the Science and Music programs, an outdoor stage and soft-landing playground equipment. We have an annual financial commitment to the School which includes supporting the literacy enrichment, Year 6 end of year expenses and teacher’s aide. The P&C hosts the Kindergarten Orientation and Open Day mornings as well as a morning tea and evening drinks to welcome new parents. Some of our yearly events are the Raffle, Picnics, Discos, Mother’s Day stalls/ breakfasts, to name a few. The P&C runs the Canteen, Uniform Shop, Band & Orchestra, P&C Events and coordinates many fundraising activities, which directly benefit the School.

How do we operate? Meetings are held on a Wednesday at the School library from 7:30pm. Come and hear the latest School updates and developments from the School’s principal, David Shuster and how the P&C can assist.

How you can help? If you are interested in joining the P&C or just assisting

with any of our events you are welcome to come along to a meeting. The dates are advertised in the weekly school newsletter, school website, or you can contact the Secretary or President with any enquiries. New members to the P&C are always welcome and encouraged. We hope to attract a cross-section of the School community, with the idea that different people are able to contribute in different ways. Please know that P&C members are not expected to turn up to every meeting nor assist with every activity. Actively participating in the P&C is great for meeting other parents, finding out what's going on within the School and providing input into your child's primary years at the School.

Code of ConductAll of the P&C office bearers and parents who help out at the School (except for the employees of the Canteen and Uniform Shop) are all volunteers. There is a Code of Conduct (copy available on the P&C Website) which applies to all volunteers, members and employees of the P&C Association. The Code of Conduct is based on the following fundamental ethical principles:

• tolerance of the views held by others which are different from your own

• courtesy and responsiveness in dealing with others• not discriminating on grounds such as gender,

sexual orientation, race, ability, cultural background, religious status, marital status, age or political conviction

• an awareness and respect for cultural difference• engaging in rational debate allowing for alternative

points of view to be expressed• not engaging in behaviour that might reasonably be

perceived as harassment, bullying or intimidation The following is the parent contact list for our P&C Committee members. Note, there are still a number of positions vacant for which we would love to welcome new volunteers. If you are interested in any of the vacant roles, please contact our P&C President at the email address below.

Year and Class CoordinatorYear coordinators are the main contact between the P&C and the parent body (via class coordinators) for school events. Each Year coordinator is responsible for working with the P&C Events Officer to organise one event during the year (e.g. Grandfriends Day or Mother’s Day Breakfast). These are well-supported roles that suit good communicators with regular access to email.

Class coordinator is a fun, easy role that suits anyone with an email.

P & C NewsClass coordinators work with their year coordinator and class teacher, helping to pull together social and fundraising events via class contact lists. They assist their teacher in contacting parents if help is needed in the classroom or on excursions, pass on information from the P&C, and maintain class contact lists. This a role that suits good communicators with regular access to email. We’d ask that all coordinators try to attend P&C meetings a couple of times a year.

New Family BuddiesNew families frequently join the school throughout the year but miss out on Term 1 orientation information. In 2017 we are introducing a ‘New Family Buddy’ (NFB) system. The year coordinator will let you know you when a new family joins the school and your role is to simply make contact with the new family, welcome and answer questions, and provide a conduit to the school.

CanteenOur canteen turns out up to 450 healthy, fresh, home-made lunches a day, with a full-time manager, one part-time paid staff member and a team of 3-4 volunteer helpers each day. It’s fun, well run, and there’s no better place to find out what’s happening in the school. (And you get a free lunch.) Each class is allocated one week a year – you can find your week on the school website under the Canteen tab and links to the roster.

Canteen Contact: [email protected]

Uniform ShopThe uniform shop is a vital fundraiser for the school as we are able to transfer all profits to school programs. The shop is always looking for more helpers, particularly to help fill daily Flexi-Schools orders: even one shift a term makes a difference.

Uniform Shop Contact: [email protected]

Events and Fundraising TeamEvery year, the P&C raises money for the school, to fund Music and Science programs as well as requested items such as literacy materials, playground equipment and computers. Funding comes from Voluntary Contribution payments, Uniform shop proceeds and events throughout the school year. All contributions of time and energy gratefully received.

Events and Fundraising Contact: [email protected]

Band and Orchestra ProgramsNeutral Bay Public School offers three bands (Junior, Senior and Concert Band, from Year 3), each conducted by a professional bandmaster. There are also two string orchestras (NBPS Orchestra and Senior Chamber), open to children K-6. Both programs are co-ordinated by parent volunteers.
